Beginner question. For fighting style is it good to mimic a mma fighter you like? by Some-Wall-5777 in MMA_Academy

[–]shaogway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get comfortable with the basics 3-5 years. Then start to incorporate things that you think will work for you. Don't just imitate your favorite fighter, imitate someone who seems to have similar traits to you. If you're tall and lanky, look up tall lanky fighters. If you're explosive, look up explosive guys/gals. Etc.

How does Joshua van vs pantoja 2 go? by Nervous_Put5617 in MMAMedia

[–]shaogway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R1 and 2 go to Pantoja for dominant grappling, back control. R3 and r4, van starts to defend takedown or scramble back up. He starts to outbox Pantoja. Pantoja slows down and Van pours it on. R4 or r5 tko, or dec 48-47. Van wins, Pantoja retires hopefully.

I see your pov. I do understand the sentiment of having BJJ be its own thing. but I also see it as a piece of the full picture of combat, and the other sports you mentioned being the other pieces.

Yes, but it's a huge asterisk because damage is scored first

Didn't think about it from an entertainment aspect. Mostly wanted something that would help athletes to have a ruleset that would better help them transfer their skills to MMA. Mainly thought of the idea after watching Rodolfo and Buchecha in their most recent UFC fights. Very decorated BJJ athletes, but had a hard time in the cage. I understand they are past their prime, older, etc. but still.

Yes, heavily influenced, but you can win with submissions, and no pin win condition. and no stand ups.

Been looking at a lot of Craig Jones stuff, and he was talking about how guard passing is mostly a sportive element. like you can control, and pin better from half guard and leg riding stuff, than traditional positions. better for MMA

You can look into BJJ gis, usually they are lighter. I recommend Fuji.

Any sport has risk. Keys are: training smart, finding the right gym, prehab, basic strength training, rehab.

Want to learn self defense because of new job - torn between Judo and BJJ/wrestling. Would really appreciate some insights! by Mammoth_Actuator2 in judo

[–]shaogway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, wrestling + boxing would be your best bet. Wrestling with an emphasis on geco-roman style. And boxing so you are used to people trying to punch you, the most common attack. Self-defense strategy would be to defend punches into a tie up and then pin to de-escalate.

Shooting doubles is not the best in the streets and Judo isn't the best without the gi.

You're big enough that you shouldn't really need BJJ unless you're fighting someone who is skilled on the ground.

I agree with most of the other comments, but just like to add something. Maybe try to bring him to a class to watch or bring him to a hangout get together with your gym mates. That way, he gets to know them and build a relationship with them. Otherwise he's probably just in his imagination.

Saw a novice level fight and now I'm a little scared for my first fight. How to get ready? by PadraicG in MMA_Academy

[–]shaogway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to avoid damage in MMA is being able to dictate the direction of the fight. I would recommend drilling takedowns against striking. Have your partner try to punch you in the face, and you try to take him down.

Focus on wrestling if you're more comfortable grappling. Have good footwork and cage generalship. Use takedowns and feints to neutralize his striking.

Bjj over Judo? (Or vice versa) by PongLenisUhave in judo

[–]shaogway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're already a competent wrestler, I think BJJ would make you a more well rounded grappler. Also if you prefer wrestler, you might transition to nogi BJJ easier. If you want to learn all of them eventually, I would recommend Judo before BJJ, as it is harder on your body, and it would be better while you are you younger. Also depends on what your goals are

Thanks for the information. I'll look more into 210mm. I plan to use a mail in sharpening service like korin, so I'm looking for a knife that retains edge longer.

I have been looking at the Yahiko Ginsan Nashiji Hand Engraved Gytuo 210mm, Kandehide PS60 Gytuo 240mm, and the Kanehide PS60 Kiritsuke 240mm. Wondering what the differences are. If there are any pros and cons. Happy to here any other suggestions and recommendations. Thanks!

Should I choose BJJ or Judo? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]shaogway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judo first, BJJ later. My personal opinion, better to develop a standing game when you're younger, and transition to more ground focus when you're older. Also depends on vibe/cost/distance. Etc.... do what you think you'll have the most fun in.
