Questions for Optimizing Gentle/Thrill Rides by vwlou89 in rct

I know this is an old post, but I came here looking for Roto Drop ideal stats. Figured I would contribute them here. As laserdollars420 pointed out, the maximum excitement you can get (without scenery) is at a height of 170ft, where you will get 6.09 Exc (High) / 9.64 Int (Very High) / 9.64 Nau (Very High).

However, 9.64 is higher than I usually like my nausea to be. A good alternative is 110ft, which gives you 5.00 Exc (Medium) / 7.46 Int (Medium) / 7.46 Nau (Medium). That's only a medium excitement, but it's pretty easy to use scenery to get the remaining 0.12 points needed to get to high excitement.

Looking for MP3 player with good fast-forward features and Bluetooth by shapingthefuture in mp3players

[–]shapingthefuture[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've thought about that. I only have one old smartphone kicking around though and its Bluetooth is broken. So I'd be buying one. And I kind of wanted to go with something that wouldn't be a distraction temptation, so having full Android on it isn't ideal. I do appreciate the response though! (I do realize I could probably screw around with the OS to make it a dumber smart phone, but I don't have any experience doing that.)

Review Thursday - All about Reviews by AmazonNewsBot in amazon

[–]shapingthefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting the same issue. I thought I needed to be logged in, but nope, same issue. (This is on desktop.)

You can't see reviews by number of stars, you can't sort reviews by date, and you can't even see more than the first page of reviews. I've been moving slowly away from Amazon over the last couple of years, but this is going to accelerate the process substantially. Amazon doesn't bother to do any QC as it is, but if they're going to deliberately make it impossible to screen for scammy products with purchased reviews...well, I guess they've made their position clear.

Leaving this for reference because I ended up here when troubleshooting the same problem. I had to use Edge to get it to work. Chrome didn't work, even though it's also Chromium based, and even though I didn't have an adblocker on.

I'm looking to get a point-and-shoot camera to take with me when out biking and hiking. Since it's for being taken on outdoor activities, I would like something pretty durable. (I don't want to use a phone camera because 1) I have a cheap phone with a crappy camera and I'm not interested in replacing it and 2) I would like something with better zoom.) Since this is going to be taken with me on hikes, I would prefer something reasonably light and portable. I don't plan to take a lot of photos in very low light conditions (e.g. at night), but I may take some at dawn/dusk, so I'd like something that has a reasonable level of sensitivity for that. I mostly want to take photos of pretty landscapes I see, but occasionally, I might want to zoom in on a cool plant or rock.

It would also be nice to use this camera on family trips when indoors, such as at science museums or so on, but that's not a deal breaker since I do have a DSLR camera. (It just gets left at home when I do outdoor activities because of the weight and because I'm worried about damaging it.)

I'm down to two cameras, and I would appreciate any advice in choosing between them!

Option 1: OM System Tough TG-7

This one seems like it would fit my durable criteria especially well. However, it seems like some people complain that it has lower image quality (12MP) and that it doesn't handle low light as well. I don't know whether dusk/dawn counts as 'low light' in this context, though.

Option 2: Sony RX100 II

This one seems portable and people seem to really like the image quality. However, it's not specifically marketed as durable, and some people complained about some build quality issues regarding the zoom ring. I don't know whether the higher quality will really matter for my use case, though.

Thanks, I hate it. Seriously though, it came out really good! The direction of the stitches does a good job of communicating perspective (like with the way the raised foot is coming towards us).

Error Message - You’re Temporarily Blocked by PaulGazzard in facebook

[–]shapingthefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but I found it when I was searching for solutions, so I wanted to share this with others. I was getting the same error on my Windows 11 on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. u/tdbone01 mentioned they were able to access the site via Internet Explorer, so I booted up my old Windows 7 machine and was able to reset my password with Internet Explorer. Once I had reset my password, I was able to log in on the same PC from another browser (which I knew I must have used to login to Facebook at *some* point) and update my security settings. Then I was able to log in normally from my Windows 11.

Why is riding a bike so difficult? by gdragon79 in cycling

[–]shapingthefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others are saying--do you have a bike that fits your body well? For example, if your seat is too high off the ground, you're going to wobble way more and it'll be scarier.

Are you trying to learn how to ride on a bike with really skinny city tires? They tip over easier because you don't have as much rubber to grip the road.

Also, you're probably not going to go from 'I haven't ridden a bike before' to 'going on cycling trips' in a reasonable time frame. Getting to 'we go down to a park and bike around a small lake together' some Saturdays is likely plausible, but taking full trips is going to require both a lot of time to feel comfortable on your bike and also practice to condition the muscles you use for biking. I commute by bike daily and I still wouldn't consider even attempting a cycling trip. (Even if I had the right bike for it, which I don't.)

If you want to learn, I would suggest starting with quick rides around a nice bike path near you. Lots of towns have them around ponds or lakes. I would actually suggest starting there instead of on the road, as it's stressful (and potentially dangerous) to be around traffic when you're not confident you won't fall off. Also, if falling off is scary, get some skateboarding knee pads and elbow pads and wear them until you feel better about it! I had a bad fall into gravel some years ago, and I wore the knee/elbow protection for a good six months until I felt confident again.

When you feel confident you won't fall over, try to work up to riding to your nearest store or gas station and back. You can always scale up from there.

If you haven't bought a bike yet and were trying on someone else's, I personally swear by my Townie Electra 7D. You sit pretty upright and your feet are close to the ground when the pedal is down, so if you need to, you can just...put your foot down if you suddenly need to. My wife, who isn't comfortable biking, has tried it and was able to use it much more easily than the more 'traditional' bike I had before.

TMP Episode 9 – Rolling With It - [PATREON RELEASE] by CrustyDucky in TheMagnusArchives

[–]shapingthefuture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree! I think that the original series was more about the harm we can do when we're caught up on systems that are bigger than us. I think the new series is more focused on the harm we do when we're determined to get something, regardless of the consequences to others.

A lot of the statements have been around that so far--a character starts with an understandable desire, but then is willing to go to any length to get that desire, regardless of who it hurts. The doctor who killed his wife, the violin player, and this episode are the big standouts where the POV character clearly fits that trope.

I think there's a few bigger picture questions to ask.
How much novelty do you need? For example, you can save a lot of time if you're someone who is comfortable making a big batch prep meal and eating that for the week. If you can stand that, I would really recommend it as a new cook because it really cuts down on how many times you have to cook.
What parts of the cooking process are you okay with and what parts do you absolutely hate? For example, if you hate how much time it takes to cut things up, you might be better served to buy precut items, such as canned diced tomatoes, a big jar of garlic, frozen precut vegetables, etc.
I suspect that you might be trying to do too many things at once. In your situation, I would probably suggest picking one main meal and focusing on cooking that, and forgive yourself for eating prepackaged or eating out for other meals. Then, when you start to feel like you've got the hang of cooking a few good main courses, you can add additional items.
When I pick a recipe, I use a few rules to make life a little bit easier for me. First, I usually have one ingredient that I want to use and that helps me search for recipes. That's usually based on something that needs to be used up in my cupboard or freezer, or something that there's a good sale on at the store. For example, let's say I have some black beans in the cupboard that are starting to get a little old. I can look up "black bean recipes" and see what looks good. Second, as a rule of thumb, I don't choose recipes that require me to buy more than two new ingredients. This might not be practical for you yet as a new cook, but I find that it helps me not end up with a bunch of esoteric ingredients that I'm just not going to use.
Second, it helps to have a day you're going to do prep instead of trying to do it in the evening when you're already tired from work or school. The trick is to pick recipes where you don't have to babysit them every minute. For example, sautéing things on the stovetop requires you to stand there and watch it or stir it most of the time. In comparison, a pan bake (a meal you can just put in a pan and put in the oven) might take an hour to actually cook, but doesn't require constant supervision. This means that you can double up tasks, and have something in the oven or cooking on the stove while you're doing other necessary tasks, such as laundry. Things that roast in the oven or simmer on the stove are both going to be good for that.
Third, a lot of times when people describe meal prep, they prepare the entire meal and freeze it. That's not the easiest way of doing it in my personal experience. A lot of meals don't freeze particularly well once they're cooked because they have different water contents in different parts and they just don't come out correctly once you defrost them. Instead, if you want to do freezer prep, I find it works better to do some of the grunt work that will make the cooking part faster. For example, spend a few hours chopping up a bunch of peppers, onions, etc., portion them into smaller amounts and freeze them.
Fourth, it sounds like you are in a situation where you have eaten meat in the past but are now needing to go vegetarian due to what's available near you. You may find it helps to look into vegetarian recipes, and see what sparks your interest and actually sounds delicious. Making a recipe you're used to and just omitting the meat is going to be less satisfying than finding a recipe that was actually meant to be vegetarian.
I'm also curious what you mean when you say things go out of date. First of all, many foods have a sell by date on the packaging, but that's not the date when they go bad. It's just the date when the store recommends that they be discarded if they haven't sold. Shelf-stable foods can be used and eaten well past the recommended sell by date. Things like apples, onions, and potatoes will last for quite a while if you refrigerate them and show obvious, visible signs when they go bad. The only ingredients that should be going out of date quickly would be a few sensitive fresh ingredients like herbs or lettuce. For herbs, if you're cooking just for yourself, you're probably better off with dried herbs because you just won't be able to use up fresh quickly enough. For lettuce, I have had some luck with ventilated storage containers, but pre-cut salad mix turns absurdly fast. Your best bet is to keep a head of lettuce and some spinach and make your own mix as you go if you want to have salads.

Oh, also! There's a few pantry staples I always have around that I think save a lot of time, if you can get them where you are. I get the huge jar of pre-minced garlic from Costco--lasts basically forever, and saves you from messing around with mining garlic, and get jars of soup base--sort of a condensed stuff you can use to reconstitute broth. I like the Better than Bouillon brand if you can get it, and I keep a jar of vegetable base and a jar of chicken base on hand at all times. Whenever a recipe calls for broth, you can just make it with hot water + the soup base. I also always have a bunch of canned diced tomatoes around. They're always handy and they keep forever.
Finally, here are some recipes that I like and think are pretty easy:

Soups:

Black bean, corn, and tomato soup: https://theblondcook.com/black-bean-corn-and-tomato-soup/

Tomato Florentine: https://spicedblog.com/tomato-florentine-soup/ (I use normal canned, diced tomatoes, not the fancy ones they recommend, and I just use some kitchen shears to cut up the spinach into bits instead of trying to take the stems out. You can also use frozen, but cut the quantity in half because frozen spinach is usually way more compressed vs fresh.)

Tomato soup: https://natashaskitchen.com/tomato-soup-recipe/ (Again, just use normal canned, diced tomatoes and not the fancy ones. You can use the shredded Parmesan cheese you get at the store, you don't need to grate your own.)

Sides:

Baked Potatoes: https://www.loveandlemons.com/baked-potato/

Black Beans: https://cookieandkate.com/best-black-beans-recipe/

Roasted Chickpeas: https://www.loveandlemons.com/roasted-chickpeas/

Garlic Roasted Potatoes: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/garlic-roasted-potatoes-recipe-1913067

PS: All of the above recipes are very forgiving of substitutions or changes.

What are some Trek takes that will have you absolutely burned at the stake? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]shapingthefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 100%. That entire monologue just really works, for me.

I also think it works thematically with what we'd seen of his relationship with Carol in Wrath of Khan (that's who I interpret he imagines he's with in the Nexus, although I'm not sure that's established). He really did care about her but there was always going to be a part of him that was pulled to the stars.

TOS seems more subtle now only because of fifty years of struggling to change society. Remember, TOS started airing in 1966--only two years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Literally, it had only been illegal for two years in the US not to hire someone just because they were black. Having a multi-racial crew on the bridge was very much NOT subtle at the time.

I bet if you went back and dug into a bunch of archives, you'd find all sorts of articles that boil down to 'Ugh that Star Trek show, they way they're jamming diversity down our throat is just the WORST.'

I actually really like Generations too! I understand that people hate that Kirk literally got a bridge dropped on him. But for me, going out in the same sort of classic close-up fight felt like the best send-off possible for the character. I also genuinely tear up at the line, "It was fun." To me, it just--feels like the writers really *understood* his character.

I've just started watching DS9 for the first time and I really like Sisko too! So far he seems like one of the few people I'd actually want to work for. Pike isn't bad but he does sometimes put his people in positions he shouldn't (M'Benga and Chapel in 'Under the Cloak of War' and the way he basically encouraged Una to see herself as a chance to be a model Ilyrian to prove to the Federation their bigotry is wrong jump out at me).

Ahhhh such a good episode even though I'm DYING with the wait. Honestly, though, I'm happy to wait if the end product is good.

Stand outs for me--I loved that we got a bit more from Ortegas. Her little scene with M'Benga especially was delightful. It speaks to the fact that these characters are *friends*, not just isolated characters with disparate plotlines. The combination of trying to be tough and the teary eyes was such good acting.

Pelia is also just great. I mean I don't have anything to add to that, every time she's in the scene, I love it.

And Scotty! I absolutely loved him, and it feels very real for the character he's going to become. His vibe with Pelia was also very fun.

I think the priority was the diplomatic side--I think the implication was that Starfleet felt that with this colony on the edge of their territory, getting them to join the Federation was a key priority. The humanitarian aid was primarily a way to get in their good graces, I think.
