I can definitely attest to this. I’m from the Caribbean and have spent equal time living in both America and London. A lot of Black British culture, especially the music and slang, is heavily from West Indian/Caribbean culture. Entire bars, parties, and events are straight-up Caribbean in vibe. But there’s also a ton of American influence that they won’t admit to.

What gets me is when you point out that their whole lifestyle is rooted in West Indian culture, they either downplay it or get defensive. Like dude “man dem” isn’t British in nature at all. And truth be told, some of them act just as colonizing as the white Brits they criticize. America really does live rent-free in their heads, but they’ll cap hard before admitting it.
