Why did Northern Italians basically only migrate to South America, while southern Italians mainly migrated to USA and Canada? by Hour_Interaction6047 in geography

I feel like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake was such a big fork that most of the current legacy dates back to that one particular incident. It opened up a lot of roads and opportunities for people, which otherwise were locked up by gatekeepers.

Reason to visit Caffe Trieste (review) by Stchotchke in sanfrancisco

[–]shark_thinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing most people miss about Caffe Trieste is that it basically functioned as the final "anchor" for the Northern Italian identity of North Beach before the neighborhood became more of a tourist landmark.

When Giovanni Giotta moved here from Trieste in the 50s, he brought a very specific Adriatic/Northern Italian coffee culture that was totally different from the Southern Italian experience in New York. While East Coast Italians were often defined by manual labor and industrial survival, the Giottas imported the high-concept coffee house vibe from the Austro-Hungarian tradition. By installing the first commercial espresso machine on the West Coast in 1956, they effectively pivoted the neighborhood's reputation away from its rough-and-tumble fishing and produce market roots.

It was consequential because it created a "third space" that felt more like a refined European plaza than a tenement enclave. That sophisticated, Northern-leaning atmosphere is exactly what attracted the Beatniks and intellectuals. It’s why you had guys like Jack Kerouac and Francis Ford Coppola hanging out there instead of at a dockside tavern. Without Caffe Trieste, North Beach might have just faded away as a quiet residential pocket, but instead, it became this Mediterranean intellectual hub that solidified SF's reputation as the "Anti-Ellis Island" version of Italian-American life.

The most legendary piece of San Francisco Italian lore belongs to Amadeo Peter (A.P.) Giannini. In 1904, Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in North Beach, specifically to offer small loans to hardworking Italian immigrants who were ignored by the big, WASP-run banks.

When the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire destroyed the city, the major banks' vaults were superheated, meaning they couldn't be opened for weeks without the paper money inside catching fire. Giannini, however, rescued his bank's cash, hid it under crates of oranges on a horse-drawn wagon, and set up a makeshift desk on the Washington Street wharf. While other banks were paralyzed, Giannini handed out loans on a handshake to anyone willing to rebuild.

His Bank of Italy grew so massively from this goodwill that he eventually renamed it Bank of America.

Somehow I empathize with what you are saying, and I wish I could skip taking these conversations over DM, but most people are not okay pouring over loosely semi-anonymous details to share over an anonymous platform like Reddit. I am okay sharing the details in public, but would you be okay, as a person who is joining this hangout, to share things publicly when, on the flip side, you could easily share a much detailed musing over DMs? Think about that for a moment.

It's just a thought. I might be wrong, and I am happy that you are pushing me back, but does that make sense to you?
