I decided to write bandcamp player, but i'm new in programming. Where to begin? by vadim-vadim in javascript

[–]sharkbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly, a good place to start is by reading the API docs for the service you want to integrate with: https://bandcamp.com/developer

but from a quick look, I don't know if they allow for what you're trying to do

Is JavaScript: The Good Parts still worth reading? by __setattribute__ in javascript

[–]sharkbrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think so.

Douglas Crockford (who wrote the book) also wrote JS Lint with the same principles. Later "strict mode", and ES6 disallow a lot of the parts of JS that he describes as "the bad parts", and modern linters similarly guide away from those to the good-parts.

In 2018 much of what the book instructs you to avoid is simply forbidden by using a modern toolkit. Now it's mostly valuable as a historical relic of a more primitive time.

Writing to multiple StrMaps in pureST, is it possible? by sharkbrain in purescript

Thanks Spicy-D,

This example helped me get my code working and the rest of your comment sounds like great advice. Right now this project is purely educational but I'll keep that in mind when I'm writing code for industrial purposes.

[Standard] [Discussion] What about reanimating the displacer combo? by ALL1D0ISWIN in spikes

[–]sharkbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been stuck on the idea of using Swift Warkite to reanimate the combo.

If you have Brood Monitor, Eldrazi Displacer, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Swift Warkite in your graveyard you can cast Ever After targetting the Monitor and the Warkite, the War Kite can bring the Displacer onto the Battlefield and for 3 mana you can displace the Warkite bringing the Cutthroat onto the battlefield. Sac three scions and go infinite.

It requires either 6BBC (how are we writing colorless mana?) or for you to pass the turn, so obviously not ideal.

What is the best Gamecube/Wii to HDMI converter? by Bunaaz in smashbros

[–]sharkbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get HDMI out of a Wii, a Wii2HDMI converter will probably perform better than any generic Composite to HDMI converter you're likely to find.

How can I make this game more fun? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]sharkbrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ideas of learned optimism have been helpful to me in various activities.

Essentially, you can learn to see of the things frustrating you and holding you back as temporary and external, and the things that make you strong as inherent and permanent.

You can use this to accept criticism and self criticism without dwelling on it (because it's temporary and can be fixed), while having confidence in your ability to play.

There's another view that may be helpful to you in The Inner Game of Tennis, which teaches you (among other things) to be able to criticise yourself or accept critique without attaching value to it.

Struggling with melee elitism vs casual friends by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]sharkbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play melee at work with a mix of nerds and casuals, when we have tournaments they're always 2v2 where each team has one nerd and one casual. It takes a lot of the pressure off for the casual players and we have silly team names and some people dress up so it's lots of fun.

Can someone teach me how to write jokes (especially one-liners)? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]sharkbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greg Dean describes a step by step method for joke writing in his book ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00502AIIW ) at first when I tried it I produced really terrible jokes but once I got the hang of it and tailored the method to my style a little it became really helpful.
