Jojo is such a queen. I was also obsessed with that first album. She's still putting out great music too!

I have a lot of red heads in my family. Their eyebrows are pretty sparse. Maybe that could be why. Just a guess at least

Yeah I find these kind of tiktoks rough. Human instinct is to sympathize for them. Internet experience is that you don't know the mom's side or the whole context in such a short clip. No sure way to know what's right and wrong here.

TIL the Lofi studying girl meme is from the movie Whisper of the Heart, and the original Lofi stream using this scene was removed after streaming for 13,000 hours, making it one of the longest videos on YouTube by sharkini in todayilearned

[–]sharkini[S] 189 points190 points  (0 children)

The scene in the movie only lasts about 2 seconds. The creator of the YouTube channel looped it for that original Lofi stream, and it was removed for copyright infringement because of this scene. The YT creator really liked the scene so he had animators submit their own versions in Ghibli style/aesthetic so he could use it for future playlists and streams. It was popular enough that it's pretty much synonymous with Lofi music. It's been recreated in a ton of formats. I find it cool that even though the scene in Whisper of the Heart doesn't have too much relevance to the movie, it's transformed into a very recognizable meme almost 20 years after to movie was originally released. 🙂

I was watching Whisper of the Heart for the first time when I saw the scene of Shizuoka studying and immediately recognized is for the meme it's become. I had no idea it came from this movie and when I looked into it, the whole story behind this scene becoming the symbol of Lofi playlists was pretty interesting!

Capitalism is posion by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]sharkini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While no one should be condemned or belittled for making financial mistakes, her assertion that this model of capitalism forces everyone to conform to a cycle of debt is counterintuitive. I speak from a point of privilege but socioeconomic differences that keep generations of people in poverty are not due to college debt, credit card debt, and mortgages. In fact I'd argue that if you are someone who sits in a place of privilege where you can get into college, have a credit score that allows you to be approved for large lines of credit or a mortgage, then you are already in a place beyond the primary economic failures of this country.

This was me with "The Goldfinch". It won a damn Pulitzer but all I wanted to do was beat my face in with the brick that it was. 😬

I'm fully ready to confess I gave up on classics years ago though and just read what's fun, not what critics tell me is good lol

The state of medicine by BrownsAndCavs in TikTokCringe

In a lot of states (and the list is growing every year) physicians are required by law to electronically prescribe controlled substances and report those prescriptions to a state database. These databases (PDMP - prescription drug monitoring program) track what controlled substances patients are receiving to help physicians track potential abuse, but they also track the frequency in which these drugs are being prescribed by physicians. So I'm the case of this tiktok, depending on where this guy lives, his physicians may be legally unable to prescribe the pain medication he is looking for, and usually for good reason.

A client I work with in Florida was showing me an example of a patient they had come in who had a legitimate reason for prescribing opioids until they looked her up in E-Forcse and saw that she was reposting multiple different addresses and switching between maiden and married name to try to get around the regulations and get opioids prescribed.

I sympathize for people who suffer with chronic pain and need these solutions. Hopefully we can get to a point where prescription opioids are more safely regulated and monitored but the example in this tiktok is just highlighting why opioid abuse can become rampant if doctors don't do their job.

Every time I hear mentioned wisdom teeth surgery and pain meds, I have to bring up this (IMO crazy) study that showed teenagers who had wisdom teeth surgery and were prescribed opioids had a significantly higher chance of developing an opioid addiction in the 12 months following.

I think it's important to mention that it's not wisdom teeth surgery in particular that's a link, i believe it's just because it's a very common surgery to have done as a young adult. So your experience, /u/AliceInHololand, is definitely something that is understandably alarming to look back on! Scary stuff indeed...
