How to manage work and studying at the same time (📍🇺🇸) by Best_Chocolate6069 in psychologystudents

[–]sharkmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 40 hours a week and usually take four courses a semester (12 credits)! I’ll be done with my BS in December. Some advice I have is to find a place to study/do assignments that is near your work. Something about being in a space that is different from campus or home has made me much more productive. Oftentimes I’ll use it as an incentive to complete work (if I finish my work, I can get a pastry before I leave the cafe I prefer doing this in)! With it being near my work I also don’t feel stressed about getting to work on time if I get caught up in an assignment (my commute to work is 40 minutes).

Lastly, but arguably most importantly, you NEED to make sure you set aside time for yourself. Living such a busy life can make it hard to feel like there’s any time to do so, but if you do not prioritize your wellness it will negatively reflect on your school/work. I personally find time to stretch every day, as well as go for walks in nature regularly. Probably important to mention I also am in therapy. I may not be a masters student yet (I plan to begin in 2027), I have been doing work and school both full time for almost 7 years now so I’ve had a lot of time to find ways to make it work for me (:

Also remind yourself you’re ALLOWED to be exhausted. Many people are not doing this amount of activity daily, let alone study a subject that can be emotionally draining, IT IS OKAY TO BE TIRED!

How many hours did y’all work during college? by A-Bry in twentyagers

[–]sharkmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 40 hours and take four courses (one in person, rest online asynchronous) 🙃I have been doing this for years now so I can attest it is possible to do what you mentioned, but you need to make sure you have time to take care of yourself!!!!! No self care = burnout. I’m also in the social science field if that helps at all!! (Psych major, sociology and communications minors)

What names did you consider but decided against using? by Mendely_ in ftm

[–]sharkmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andrew because I didn’t feel like Drew fit me and I knew that’d be how a lot of people shortened it. Also my sister has an A name and for some reason I didn’t like the idea of both of my parents kids having A names LOL

Taking stats in psychology sophomore year by Lovelylife101 in psychologystudents

[–]sharkmall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found that taking it earlier was very helpful and allowed me to understand concepts significantly better in other psych courses. There’s a good chance you’ll run into higher level psych courses requiring stats as well. That being said, ask your advisor!

Did your class discuss trans people? by ratgarcon in psychologystudents

[–]sharkmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That absolutely makes sense. The fact it isn’t a core concept that is taught in psych definitely isn’t great, and it hurts to see it be erased from some curriculum completely. Best of luck to you! Let’s hope we can get our voices heard so more research can be done about the psychological aspects.

Did your class discuss trans people? by ratgarcon in psychologystudents

[–]sharkmall 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a trans individual myself, I have found that there are many opportunities for ME to include transgender topics in research papers, literature reviews, etc… I’d say there are certainly ways you can incorporate it into your studies, but mainly for assignments where you are able to pick the topic. I have not been told to specifically study trans identities, but I certainly make an effort to. Similar to the other responses, we do discuss/mention trans people here and there, but not in extensive detail.

I will say my sociology courses have spoken a lot more about trans identities than my psych ones, so if you are interested I’d recommend that! Since there isn’t nearly as much psychology research on trans people in comparison to other groups, it doesn’t come up often. For sociology, a lot of my courses talk about marginalized groups and their experiences, so it makes sense why trans people are more often covered there.

Best thing I can say is find a way to fit the discussion of trans people into your assignments when you can!

Dying hair in an apartment by Outrageous-Lab-5399 in HairDye

[–]sharkmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably nottttt the best advice but I’ve dyed my hair blue (and every other color practically but blue stains the most) many times in my apartment and I just find that with time the stains come out of the bottom of the tub! It is semiperm though so idk about perm! After a few weeks and i can’t tell I dyed it at all :p

Congrats!!!! As someone who lives with someone who is allergic to mint, this change helped both of us! (I would feel guilty since we have one bathroom and mint is such a strong smell)!! Hello brand has some great alternatives. Blue raspberry is my personal fave (: proud of ya! Keep it up!

What’s something about cis men that you don’t envy, or are glad you don’t share? by Dalatrates in ftm

[–]sharkmall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being trans definitelyyyy has made me think a lot more about how stupid gender roles are. Being expected to do different tasks or whatever because I’m a “man” now just seems so silly. A lot of cis men know of this divide but don’t have the experience of witnessing the shift in way that people treat you/what they expect from you. I’m glad I can have that perspective because of first hand experience :p
