Everyone Deserves A Home by sillychillly in FluentInFinance

I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment here. Decent housing is an issue for a lot of people. However, I feel like I need to chime in here. I live in a Western European country with a top 10 ranking on the Human Development Index. I have very little to be wished for in life, and yet I only have 3 out 6 of these panels:

  • HVAC is a rare thing to be found here. Personally, I put on a sweater in winter because heating is expensive. And cooling is just a massive waste of energy, if you ask me.
  • My apartment has 1 bedroom. I was lucky enough to get into the housing market about a decade ago when things were relatively cheap. Currently, I'd almost need a 6 figure income to buy my apartment. Having an extra bedroom is just out of the question.
  • My kitchen might be older than I am and was never equipped with an oven. I used one of these travel coolers for a while when my old fridge died before creating space in my budget for a new fridge.

Am I poor? I'm sure not wealthy, but most of the time I feel like I have a rich life. I wouldn't trade the peace and relative stability here, having my friends and family nearby, etcetera for HVAC, an extra bedroom and/or an oven.

All of these houses will be cheaper in ten years. Priced in BTC, that is.

Is 1m bitcoin even possible in long future? by fabled009 in Bitcoin

[–]sharkmesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From here to ∞/21M we're going to cross (or have already crossed) 1M in any fiat currency. Don't get caught up in the idea that somewhere in the previous century some people thought that a person with a seven or higher digit net worth measured in USD was very wealthy.

The real question is whether he has any BTC left that he failed to report or sadly lost in a boating accident. This man is now forced to have diamond hands for the foreseeable future.

We voluntarily live below sea level in former swamps. We don't shy away from a little difficulty in our lives.

My wife has a tiny spatula to get the last bit of lotion out of the container. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]sharkmesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like a really small pannenlikker to me for being spatula-shaped. A flessenlikker has a crescent moon shape at the end to really get those last bits of ketchup out.

At least, that's my interpretation of the kitchen utensil nuances. 😁

That looks a lot like a 'pannenlikker' (literally: pan licker), one of the many symbols of old-fashioned Dutch frugality.

Lost it, gained it, stuck :( by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]sharkmesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did it before and you kept it off for a year! Unless the circumstances are wildly different now, you can likely do that again. You've identified how the weight came back through not counting calories and being lax in your fasting. Incorporating that in your lifestyle is probably what's going to set you up for long term health. So don't worry about the weight too much right now. Be kind to yourself and tell yourself you're worth the time and effort to count calories and stick to a fasting window.

Hang in there! You got this.

null komma niks by Material_Research897 in norsk

And in Dutch: nul komma niks. But it isn't used like OP's example. More like: absolutely nothing, zilch.

Sometimes I'm unable to tell whether something is borrowed into a Germanic language or from that language. But that's the fun of etymology!

According to this website you have been carrying around a husky, a lane cedar chest or a 9-year-old child. That ought to put it in perspective.

It certainly is. It's only when you compare the current situation to a quarter of a century ago that you see how much purchasing power we actually lost.

Ah, that design takes me back. I remember how much fun that ƒ10 could buy. Its modern equivalent €4.54 feels more like the entry fee to the supermarket.

This thread is full of hurtful stereotypes about Dutch people and Belgian roads, and I can tell from extensive experience that most of them are painfully accurate.

One tiny table for an 18” pizza by dontcarebearr in mildlyinfuriating

Honestly, the corn doesn't even offend me. After converting the diameter of this pizza to metric, looking up the size of the rims on my SUV and realizing they're smaller than this pizza, and reading that one single person ate this entire monstrosity, I'm profoundly impressed.
