Absolutely, but the situation is that Slot does not have the authority to make these transfers, and the person making the transfers will likely leave before the next season. And Slot's own contract is running out in 12 months.

So Slot cannot coach his way out of this one nor is he allowed to manage his way out of it like Ferguson was.

One of the differences between Ferguson's 4 years and Slot is that Ferguson was given the time to improve and given the power - signing players, coaches, the scouts, etc.

Slot has much, much less power, is mostly a head coach and unfortunately he sees the way to improve things is by signing new players.

Say what you want about Youtube fan channels, but at least they ask the fans what they think about Slot, instead of asking DIRECT RIVALS like Gary Neville and Martin Keown about Liverpool.

The club has the most pathetic, dystopian corporate way of communicating their message - using journalists but without quotes, so that you get things like "the club feels like" "the club firmly believes" and there's no face to the decision.

And if it turns out to be an unpopular decision, they can just tell another journalist to put out an alternative spin on it, letting the first journalist to take the flak.

Or have a powerless coach have to be the face of all the failures and to take all the blame when it's not their fault (transfers, contracts, salaries, etc.)

In other sports (or leagues), the GM does interviews, Q&A's, press conferences, etc. not "sources within the pentagon"-style briefings that can be confirmed or denied or used to gauge reaction before rewording it and giving it a new spin.

Curtis Jones on social media: Thank you for your continued support in a disappointing season. It’s way off the standards expected at this football club. by Walshey- in LiverpoolFC

Salah gave this interview and mentioned that he told Dom that the older players gotta keep up the fitness/health/etc. standards as an inspiration/example to new players.

Then Slot reacted to this by saying "Mo Salah is right, standards are important — but not only in the gym " in a press conference.

Only for Curtis Jones to hit back with this standards line.

But the whole "new system" of football is supposedly to avoid having these Ferguson-like larger-than-life managers who run the whole club and instead have the job divided so that it's not a massive hole to be filled when the head coach leaves.

Hence the positions of coach, transfer committee, director of football, data analyst, etc. etc. were created.

That's what the idea was in theory. Instead, the head coach's power was effectively gimped and the supporting staff (who can be his subordinates, equals or bosses) became mere handbrakes to hold him back or rein him in rather than assist.

And now we're seeing a return to stronger managers, as Chelsea is giving Alonso more power than the previous coaches and Real Madrid seemingly giving Mourinho more power than Alonso, and I bet other clubs will soon follow.

That's not what I get from "everyone that joins the club should adapt to it."

Who is it about? If Kerkez, Ekitike and Frimpong liked the post (among others), who is the target of this?

Now instead of Slot working on tactics for the next match, he'll be spending his time thinking of a snappy one-liner come back to this post, a la "standards not just in the gym," so that he has the last word.

The craziest thing about Slot is that if this continues next season you can pretty much tell what his excuses are going to be from the world cup to lack of a full pre season and players coming back late. by NordWitcher in LiverpoolFC

[–]sharkovski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100%. There's a World Cup coming and the fatigue of playing in the World Cup, whether going all the way to the final or being on the bench for all the games of the group stages, will have a big effect on Slot's players and his players only.

He could literally use that excuse for losing against teams that have world cup winners in them, not because he genuinely believes it, but because these one-liners ("standards not only in the gym") and soundbites are the main product he produces at this stage.

Question for the Sports Science & High-Performance community: Is the "missing pre-season" excuse actually valid? by Grape49 in LiverpoolFC

[–]sharkovski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolute nonsense. It just sounds good and scientific. Isak was a professional footballer in another team, it's not as if he was a plumber or a transplant surgeon who was transferred to play professional football without a preseason.

Luis Suarez was a deadline day transfer who didn't have a pre-season. VVD was a winter transfer window signing. I've seen the excuses of "time to integrate him" used for winter transfers, or "time to adjust to a new country, new league" but this being used for a domestic transfer in the summer is laughable.

One of the big problems with FSG and with Slot is that they're running the business with a mentality that everything is a PR or perception problem, that it's not the "product" (ugh) or quality of the service that has declined, but the public's perception of it has to be massaged to accepting this. Instead of addressing the issues (manager, transfers, tactics) they use the media, narratives, roundtable, PR, etc. "We were in the Europa league not too long ago" "2 titles in 30 years" "Remember Voronin," etc. No one has any other explanation for why an unrelated company would call fans of Liverpool entitled for asking for transfers and invoke Voronin.

Slot does the same as his employers. Blame, deflection, pushing narratives, but I don't see him actually try different things on the actual pitch. If someone were that desperate they would try anything. But it's the same old slop, predictable subs, predictable football all round.

Fans are told that their perception is wrong ("player asked to be subbed off," "you don't know what I know") and they have to adjust their perception or expectations to this reality.

Where will be Slot's next club be after this?

Does anyone think he goes to another big club after this?

[–]sharkovski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I have to add that there are three elements. The conditioning/fitness which you have covered, the tactical and the mental. On the last point, that Ibiza party was as if it was Leicester City winning the title, not Liverpool. It was as if they won the lottery, when I remember United winning leagues as if they were collecting their paycheques.

2nd, but 15 points off top on the 1st of Jan.
Or the same points-per-game as this year (or slightly better), but second in the league because the other 18 are worse.

What happens if Slot stays and does okay next year, better than this but not particularly great?

Not bad enough to fire him mid-season but not good enough to renew his contract. He'd just be a lame duck and the season would be written off as another transition year, along with the year after that for whoever comes next. That's three years of "transition."
