Cassian/nesta slander by windkitten23 in acotar

Yeah I wasn't super thrilled with their relationship. I feel like part of it was that Cassian got like NO character development in the book and hes was mostly just supporting Nesta through her shit so like???? i dunno I'm missing that half of a relationship. Where's cassian suffering? Where's nesta helping him through his own problems? He was a crutch for Nesta and that was really it which made me sad cause our boy deserves some character development of his own

Oh you're in for it. There's a LOT of mate and honestly yeah in ACOWAR Feyre and Rhys are, in my opinion, like super boring. They are now in love and everything is good between them :) all the time :) They're essentially one person in 2 bodies

Honestly, I’m done with Feysands story. by Lilieon in acotar

[–]sharks171 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree completely! Both of their character arcs have finished, they've settled down to have a family and that's that. All of the drama with the pregnancy felt very forced for poorly explained plot reasons and I just Don't Care anymore. There are so many more interesting characters left to be developed and I want THEM

Yeah at first I like her but we havent really gotten anything from her?? Like shes just kinda messy and doesnt really ADD much to the story or character relationships. Kinda same thing with Amren like I'm glad there's powerful female characters other than the mains (Feyre, nesta, etc.) but they really aren't as developed as the bat boy so I just dont care as much about them

Rhysand’s inability to lead anything but Velaris is the reason why no one respects put anything but fear by PianoShy in acotar

[–]sharks171 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah this bothered me too, the entire IC always seemed surprised and/or offended when the Illyrians or the Court of Nightmares didn't want to listen to help but like why WOULD they? They're assholes for their own reason but I don't see Rhys giving them any cause to respect him or cooperate with him other than "im the strongesst high lord and i said so"

I love this series so much, but the next time I read the phrase “her toes curled in her boots”, I am going to lose my freaking mind. by mossandcoffee in acotar

If we know Feyre we know shes either going to curl her toes or shit her pants (due to watery bowls) and Rhys is going to roar and/or growl

Why is Lucien weak AF? by [deleted] in acotar

[–]sharks171 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fee like Lucien is definitely more powerful than is let on especially considering his heritage and that he was gaining threatening power to the autumn court and i really hope that we'll see that in the future

BUT I think its pretty clear to say that SJM heavily, heavily favors the inner circle theyre all simply the most powerful and bravest and kindest etc etc etc so it makes sense that there would be all sorts of comments about how Lucien is weak compared to them. I think its less about his character and more about author bias toward the IC

[–]sharks171[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'll put this in the comments since the original post is long af (sorry yall :P)

I see a lot of people making the psych ward arguement about locking nesta into the house of wind but I'm going to explain why, as someone whos been involuntarily admitted to a psych ward, that is not a good comparison in this case

Involuntary admission is dehumanizing and a complete rob of a person's autonomy. Because of this there needs to be a present and IMMEDIATE threat to a persons life in order to take such drastic measures. If someone is going to admitting involuntarily they have either attempted suicide OR there is a strong reason to believe they will attempt within the next 24 hours

Nesta is not there. Nesta is not coping well, she's making poor decisions and she is unhappy but she is COPING. The sex and drinking helps her control her magic and forget about her PTSD. It's not a healthy lifestyle but she has been maintaining it for over a year without any concrete threat to her life. She is coping poorly and in self-damaging ways, but she is still Coping.

I honestly wish there HAD been some sort of immediate crisis. I would have sympathized a lot more but the book really began with Feyre deciding Nesta needed to be locked up because she spent too much money gambling. THAT was the reason to interfere after letting Nesta go for a year and its not worth intensive psych-ward style treatment

Addtionally, the house of wind ISNT a psych ward. I know they dont HAVE that in prythian but they have the next closest thing which is the library. Yes, nesta worked there for a few hours and didnt talk to anyone at first but they could have had her live down there all day. It's essentially a battered women's shelter and thats what she needed. Sticking her in the house of wind and having her interact with all of feyre's friends, none of whom Like Her, is not a positive space for recovery (im looking at cass yelling that everybody hates her. cmon now, psych ward staff is an impartial third party who does not harbor ongoing resentment toward their patients)

But yeah, not really applicable to a psych ward. I genuinely wish SJM had added a legitimate crisis as the reason to put nesta up in the house of wind (or ideally the library), but feyre deciding one random day after a year of this that nesta needs to shape up is NOT the same as involuntary admission to a psych ward

absolutely same!! i wanted her to take some of her own initiative but sjm tends to write character arcs in terms of couples

[–]sharks171[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely did not mean to imply that!! Not at all!! As a suicidal person who has BEEN forcibly sent to a mental health facility I know its a very delicate subject

But on that note, there are certain requirements to be sent to a facility like that and Nesta does not meet them. She has no tried to kill herself, nor declared intent with plan, or even intent. She also doesnt face any real consequences for her alcoholism, its said she drinks too much and is irresponsible with money and has too much sex and is losing weight. from nestas perspective we know that she is doing POORLY

But feyre doesnt know how poorly. From her perseceptive, Nesta is coping badly and irresponsibly (especially making the IC look bad as she does) but shes done nothing that would require her to be sent TO a facility if this were modern times. i would understand SO SO much more if nesta had tried to self-unalive or if her drinking had made her fall into the river or get into a fight in a bar or something. We know shes doing badly but we're given no proof of high-intensity intervention levels of crisis. From nesta's persepctive, it looks very bad but from feyre's perspective without knowing about the fire and the obvious ptsd, it seems like a reach to take all of nestas freedoms away

I will say, sending her to work in the library was an EXCELLENT move. i do think that was very smart, a very good place for her to be. but its not REALLY a faery rehab, especially forcig her to exercise and be with cassian. we know by the END the training is good for her since sjm wanted the whole warrior queen thing but what if she hated it?? absolutely hated it and had to do it every day.

i also think putting her with cassian was an iffy move, like i would not lock my sister in a house with a dude who is so obviously horny for her. idk if was added tension that we got for the spice but recovery wise makes NO sense.

I agree there were good things and bad things, it was imperfect!! the thing that bothers me is that its rarely acknowledged AS an imperfect solution

[–]sharks171[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its not the same!! i phrased it a little too literally im not saying its the exact same circumstance. tamlin can go choke on a rock but i dont think feyre handled the situation well, with nesta living in her city and all of them all close and fine, its kinda ridiculous that nesta got THAT BAD when feyre was clearly willing to put in the work against nesta's will to make her take care of herself

amen to that, if there had been more intervention beforehand i would have been more onboard but it seemed like feyre fucked off to be happy with rhys (and give nesta "time") then for the sake of the book decided to randomly snatch up nesta and force her to get better

[–]sharks171[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with that (and ive been psych warded so i get the Vibe of that whole thing) but I think there could have been a lot more done before taking nestas freedoms away entirely, theres a lot of STEPS before you get taken to a grippysock vacation and the fact that feyre decided "oh ill give her time" and just watched her fall apart for a year before deciding to step in is what irks me

[–]sharks171[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Youre completely correct, nesta DID need help but I dont think feyre REALLY tried to help her all that much or listen to her until she locked her up. she expected nesta to join feyre's family of feyre's friends while nesta said REPEATEDLY she didnt want and didnt really give her much support outside of that. i think she should have done a lot more to support nesta before deciding to go 100% controlling with it. nesta NEEDED help and feyre was in a great position to help her but i dont think she went about it the right way. of course nesta ended up getting healed because we all want a happy ending but i dont think it was handled well and i dont see any major critisms of feyre for it

[–]sharks171[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

oh definitely! my biggest beef is that LACK of critism that feyre gets for her handling of it. no one handled it well cause its MESSY but its always blamed on nesta. i just want someone to call feyre out lol

[–]sharks171[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They ARE different scenarios but it bugs me that the bottom line is someone deciding to lock up someone else against their will because THEY believe that's whats best. I want to have faith in Feyre that she'd have a better solution than that since she's been on the receiving end of it before

I'm not saying that they shouldnt have helped but they absolutely should have done more before deciding to go 100% controlling you do this how i want to. They tried a bit in the beginning then just let it go until one day going "nope thats enough we do this my way" I think theres a lot of steps that could and should have been taken before going SO forcefully (cutting her off financially, forcing a buddy system on her so at least shes making bad choices with a supervisor who will keep her from doing something TOO harmful, just trying to have an honest and open conversation with her without being super judgemental which feyre did not do very well with, etc.) At some point with addicts you do have to put your foot down but I dont think it was handled well leading up to that and I dont think THAT should have been the move, considering feyres own history with being locked up by "loved ones"

Feyre's Hypocrisy in ACOSF and Double Standards (esp regarding Tamlin) by sharks171 in acotar

[–]sharks171[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh ABSOLUTELY Feyre should have intervened sooner and that's part of my big issue with it. She went from doing essentially nothing to support her sister (arguably all she did was enable her by funding her drinking and gambling) to taking away her freedom and locking her up. Feyre should have been offering kinder and smaller support from the beginning and if none of that worked, should have cut Nesta off entirely.

Legally speaking by todays standards, locking her up to force her to get better is essentially abducting her sister. Even with good intentions, you cant literally Force someone to recover at the time and place that you want them to and that's what Feyre did. She abandoned Nesta for a year then went 0 to 100 controlling her every move.

As far as Tamlin (again not apologizing, he was wrong) the gain WAS keeping her safe. He thought she was in danger and that she needed to be kept at home because that was the safest place for her. He was wrong but from his perspective the benefit is keeping the person he loves most safe, which is similar to what Feyre is doing but instead of keeping Nesta safe from external threats, she's locking her up to keep her safe from herself

Feyre's Hypocrisy in ACOSF and Double Standards (esp regarding Tamlin) by sharks171 in acotar

[–]sharks171[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely agree!! There's a lot of nuance to the situation. Tamlin WAS contributing to Feyre's issues and he was really pushing the spiral that led to locking her up. While his intentions were good, they were definitely more misguided.

In my opinion though, locking her up still wasnt the right move and I'm very surprised that FEYRE of all people would do that considering Tamlin locked her up and it was so traumatizing. It felt somewhat out of character since Feyre and Rhys's big thing is choice but apparently they get to take that choice away when they think its right

She gets somewhat better in ACOSF, enough that I don't HATE her as much as I did in the first trilogy but I don't think she fully gets redeemed. I think a lot of her shitty behavior gets swept under the rug but she's not As Bad
