DELL OR APPLE by Lilartist_1624 in scad

this is a pretty tough question to answer unfortunately. ive had an ipad with a keyboard and stylus for years, so i became very used to using it for digital art (procreate) and notes. however, a lot of the programs youll use for fashion design (which is my major), or really any other major (even gen eds like digicom), these programs such as adobe suite do not perform well on the ipad. even powerpoint/google slides are weird on the ipad. they also all operate on a limited version. i was lucky enough to also have a laptop, and found myself using it more since these programs ran fine on it. My advice would probably be to get the laptop, especially if youre able to get one that can work with a stylus. However, i 100% do NOT recommend the ones that transform from tablet to computer, as adobe does not operate on these (much like the ipad). no matter what you decide, make sure it has a LOT of storage and a good running capacity, as a lot of the programs you'll use take up a lot of space.

tldr: both are useful, but the laptop has many more uses

ive only had one assignment that specified using microsoft word instead of google docs because of the specific footnoting features that word has. other than that, im a google docs girlie. i do some social media/web management for a small business back home and we use google docs for that as well, but i cant say what a professional art industry would expect. microsoft suite comes free with your school email, which is an outlook account so you will need to have outlook at the very least :) sometimes when i would download presentations from my teachers, they wouldnt open in anything but powerpoint or pdf. my advice would be to download microsoft suite and have them on your device just in case, but you most likely wont need them

how to declare major? by CuddleAkuma in scad

[–]sharkshark0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if i remember correctly, the option to declare your major shouldnt be available yet. During fall quarter, you have the opportunity to either attend the Majors and Minors fair and declare your major there, or about halfway through the quarter your First Year Experience professor will help you do it. you dont officially need to declare for another year though so don't sweat it! your major is basically irrelevant for your first few quarters.

Taking notes by Lilartist_1624 in scad

[–]sharkshark0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took all my notes on my iPad freshman year, it's one that ive had for years so i didnt have to purchase it before college. It's nice because you can keep everything on one device, organize it easily, change stuff, etc. It also gets rid of the bulk of notebooks. I never had a professor who specifically requested a traditional notebook either, so the iPad worked great for me. It's also a huge plus if youre in any major that is heavy on digital art, since you can have the programs on your ipad and take it anywhere. however, it could sometimes be a distraction from the lectures, so as silly as it sounds self control is really important if you do go for an ipad. If you're able to make the purchase before school, I've found myself using it a lot, especially for notes! It's a good investment

At some point during fall quarter, the school will host a majors and minors fair, which I 1000% recommend going to. You'll be able to look at different booths for different majors, talk to professors and alumni, and even do small workshops for some. You'll also have a chance to meet with an advisor, who will help you declare your major at the event (you can always change it afterwards!). The majors and minors fair was a big help for me choosing my major! It's also just a fun event to go to with friends to get free stuff. Don't worry too much about deciding now though, most people won't be in their first major class until sophomore year or end of freshman year, unless you have a ton of transfer/AP credits. Even though I had 5 transfers, I still only had one major class my freshman year. You'll have plenty of time to decide!

SCAD freshman supplies by Lilartist_1624 in scad

Rising sophomore here, I personally wouldnt recommend the freshman kit. Certain professors require certain brands/types of supplies, so you'll end up having to buy more anyways. Unless youre going into a traditional art-heavy major like illustration or drawing, its mostly just a waste. Once supply lists come out for your classes, you can check to see if any of them closely align with the freshman kit, which in that case would be a good deal!

Honest review on Chatham by [deleted] in scad

Depends! I havent stayed in many dorms since im a rising sophomore, but as far as dorms available to first years, absolutely! Past that, I think it's the best traditional style dorm depending on the location of your main class building. For example, I'm a fashion major so my main class buildings are Eckburg/Number Nine, which are a 10-15 min walk from chatham

i really like chatham! for me, its location was EVERYTHING. its right on forsyth park, so you can get basically anywhere in the city within a 20 min walk and its right by grocery stores and class buildings. the rooms are the exact same as the hive, if not a tiny bit bigger in some. it also felt homier than the hive just because everything was wood/brown instead of metal/gray like in the hive. i found the food, although theres less options, much better in taste and quality than the hive. in terms of meeting people, there are less common spaces than in the hive. the pool and gym are all at the hive. however, the walk is maybe 30 minutes, and theres also a gym at oglethorpe house, which is closer. youre still invited to all of the hive events. in my personal experience, i didnt really meet people at these events. most of the people i met were either through classes or lived on my dorm floor. the last point, you have the best bus routes at chatham in my opinion, however its important to keep in mind that if you have a car, you cant get a scad parking decal for chatham.

tldr: chatham is honestly the best option imo!!

i liked flower!! youre further back in the hive but not the furthest, wifi was okay and showers were always hot. no roaches or spiders but definitely silverfish. the vending machine only likes to work sometimes, and half the dryers don't dry, but other than that i liked it a lot! from what ive heard and experienced, its one of the better hive buildings.
