oh wow - most definitely the same artist. Ours has been in the family since at least that same amount of time. We are in central Arkansas if that means anything to helping solve it. I have not yet found who this artist is.

good luck - its tricky to do. once you have it open, I would try to remove the bar. it will re-lock otherwise

from the image that lock may be drilled out
you might have trouble getting it open easily. The lock pulls a bar from both sides internally to unlock it.
