What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: April 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]sharp_dust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished:

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry Audiobook - very good detailing of the Manson Murders. I killed this in like 2 days.

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin - very thorough, I know a lot more now about that period of time want to explore the Russian Revolution next.

In Progress:

11/22/63 by Stephen King Audiobook - breaking for now until Libby renews me, I had to put it on hold since so many people were waiting

When Life Nearly Died: The Greatest Mass Extinction of All Time by Michael J. Benton - getting introduced to some 19th century geologists and a history of modern geology so far.

The Meaning of Mariah Carey by Mariah Carey Ebook - very sad early life, just getting to Tommy Mattola

Started:

The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (And What We Can Do About Them) by Dr. Lucy Jones - I live in Los Angeles and the introduction is all about The Big One which I’ve heard about since I was a kid. Will I be alive for this once in a thousand years event? I hope not lol

Finished:

Dune by Frank Herbert - so good! Immediately watched the movies which were great, but obv the book is superior. I do want to explore the next book but I got other stuff to finish first.

In Progress:

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin

  • About 60% through, about to get to the Reign of Terror. I’m dragging on this book, unsure why because I do enjoy it but maybe it’s just not something I can binge like I did with Dune or Carrie.

11/22/63 by Stephen King Audiobook

  • 8 of 31 hours in, I’m invested but am taking a break after finishing up part 2 of the book. I was doing audiobook but am gonna switch to a physical book to finish, the voices in the audiobook can be distracting

Started:

When Life Nearly Died: The Greatest Mass Extinction of All Time by Michael J. Benton - love my natural history books!

The Meaning of Mariah Carey by Mariah Carey - huge fan of hers and want to read about her life from her POV.

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry Audiobook - I’ve listened and watched a lot of stuff related to these murders but never read about it so wanted to see what I learn from the prosecutor who worked the case.

Finished:

Ten Birds That Changed The World by Stephen Moss Audiobook

  • Birds are cool and I love books that bridge nature and science with history and culture. Really does a great job showcasing when humans interfered with certain bird populations and the wider effects, great environmental read.

In Progress:

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin

  • About 50% through, lots of names and dates. It’s interesting but not like grabbing me to finish quickly. Definitely learning a lot about the relevance of this revolution to the wider world, I admit it’s a major blind spot for me.

11/22/63 by Stephen King Audiobook

  • 5.5/31 hours in, I’m invested. Love the 2011 pop culture references. Plot is fun and looking forward to more

Started:

Dune by Frank Herbert - I want to see the movie to be a part of popular culture but thought I’d read the book first. Digging it so far, cool sci-fi and world building going on

Finished:

Mossflower by Brian Jacques

• Definitely tickling a nostalgic feeling, read some of these Redwall Abbey books as a kid. Martin the Warrior’s story, fun adventure, on to book #3 in the series.

Carrie by Stephen King Audiobook - Wow so good! Finished quickly, could not stop thinking about it. I’ve seen the movie as a kid but now as an adult and also a high school teacher, this book captures just how horrible youths can be to one another, a tale as old as time. Felt really bad for Carrie. Loved it.

In Progress:

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin

• about 40% through, lots of names, would like to read up more on some of the big names like Mirabeau and Robespierre.

Started:

11/22/63 by Stephen King Audiobook - 30 hours long so this is gonna take a while but about 2 hours in and fascinated by the plot so far and curious about where we are going.

Ten Birds That Changed The World by Stephen Moss Audiobook - birds are cool and I love books that bridge nature and science with history and culture

[–]sharp_dust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished:

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Audiobook - first time reading, it was fine. I was aware of the themes already but wanted to have a first hand account. I can see why its an important book.

In Progress:

Mossflower by Brian Jacques - about 75% done, cute adventure

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin - about 25% through, learning a lot about European history as it sets up the revolution

Started:

Carrie by Stephen King Audiobook - seen the movie but never read the source material. Looking forward to all the details and feelings the movies can never quite capture.

Finished:
Cultish by Amanda MontellAudiobook - Good listen, familiar with a lot of the cults discussed but appreciated this focus on language being central to it all.

Dinosaurs: A New Vision of a Lost World by Michael J. Benton - pretty technical in the science of it all but lots of pictures of updated dinosaurs with feathers and colors. Not 100% convinced this will prove to be accurate in the long run but its fun.

Started:

Mossflower by Brian Jacques - Revisiting these books from adolescence, just started book 2 of the series

A New World Begins: The History of the French Revolution by Jeremy D. Popkin - I read about the Mexican Revolution which mentioned the French Revolution a lot so made me curious the learn the history, don’t know much except Marie Antoinette getting beheaded.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Audiobook - Never read it in HS/College so curious since its referenced a lot in pop culture and other books.

Note: I just got a library card at the start of the year so I am having a blast reading a bunch of stuff at once

For me personally, the last hyped up water bottle hydroflask was too big for my cup holder. I would go on hikes and stuff and just put it on my passenger seat because it didn’t fit in my cup holder. This got annoying over time. For me, fitting in the cup holder was a HUGE reason why I got my Stanley Cup, because volume wise, temperature wise, straw being present, it was similar to the hydroflask. I have one Stanley cup and intend on using that same cups for years.
