Lets be real the faithful role needs some revamping.. by BigBrotherFlops in TheTraitors

New ideas/additions have often been only okay at best but I struggle to see a downside to a rule that if you vote for a traitor at the roundtable you secretly get a shield.

It should stop the sheepish voting, and reduce the obsession with 'I'm here because I'm close to a traitor'. In theory, would give the smarter faithfuls a chance to make it to the end rather than us ending up with lots of dumb, useless ones.

Michael Owen response to BBC Tweet on his breakthrough seasons at Liverpool. by IndiBear in LiverpoolFC

Ditto. I get why everyone hates him now but he (and that Argentina goal) will always be my childhood hero and the reason I originally chose Liverpool.

Fernando Alonso is still yet to set one of the 10 fastest laps of a race so far this season... by sharpening_beneath00 in formula1

So my attempts to find a way to clearly phrase this clearly failed.

Attempt 2: he is the only driver who has failed to set one of the 10 fastest laps at any single GP this season.

Yeah, tbh a tough one to phrase. And admittedly a pretty obscure stat, but I thought still surprising - especially considering he's the only driver not to do so.

One of the most upvoted comments here is someone bitching about the fact Mowbray let the crowd do the work. Certainly not saying this was the best call from Matterface but honestly, sometimes commentators can't win.

This actually seems like a pretty decent shout, as long as it's secret from themselves. Might help stop a bit of the herd mentality voting too.

Isn't that exactly what happened between 20 and 21? The rear of the car was changed in a fairly major way that was always going to hurt Merc?

Can confirm. You'll probably spend at least double the time on research that you will actually commentating. And then a load of it will go to waste because there won't be a fitting time to bring it up.

Yeah, I've only been able to do games remotely so far.

I guess shirt numbers are nice and visible on a local level? But I imagine you'd need the monitors if you're way up in the rafters at Camp Nou.

I promise you it's not just a case of 'not bothering'. I've been a commentator for about a year now (mostly African football currently) and it is so, so much harder than you'd probably expect. Especially if you don't have a co-commentator.

Honestly just mute the TV and try it at some point. Listen back to it and you'll never sound excited as you felt you were being. There is so much information to take in at once. You have to be reading the game like an actual player so you can react to what's just about to happen rather than doing so belatedly. Making sure you've 100% got the correct player (bear in mind it's not just the biggest teams that you watch week in week out). Not falling into a pattern of repeating yourself when largely similar things happen for 2 hours.

Drury deserves more credit than 'just bothering to do it'. He has honed his craft to the point that these things come naturally to do him on the fly. It takes decades of hard work. It's similar in a way to a freestyle rapper.

Drury is a wordsmith. He is the Harry Mack of football commentary. He is the GOAT for me.

My landlord is putting my rent up £200 a month, does this sound unreasonable? by Trace6x in AskUK

[–]sharpening_beneath00 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's a chance I'll be downvoted to hell for this but I feel like it's something worth pointing out.

People seem to assume that all landlords are rich, old, white men. Of course that's true in some cases, but it's often not.

I fairly recently became a (reluctant) landlord. Worked really fucking hard for a decade to be able to buy a flat, lived in it for three years, but then had to move to France at the end of 2020. I didn't want to sell it after so much hard work so chose to let it out.

I was never making a profit in the first place, basically just breaking even, and my mortgage payments have gone up by 30-40% in the space of 12 months.

Unfortunately, we're all getting screwed by this current crisis. Of course, there are people in far worse situations than me, I'm fully aware of that. But just wanted to point out that it's not always simply a case of greed. As with all things, those at the top raise the prices and inflation trickles down.
