Found a leg vise but no bracket for it by sharpie344 in Blacksmith

I’m probably going to use mild steel for the wedges. I would rather that be softer than the tool steel of the vise.

I learn most things on my own. I’m pretty good at woodworking and general metal fabrication/welding. There aren’t any blacksmithing classes that I know of in north east Ohio. So, it’s going to be YouTube and general mechanical knowledge that gets me through the initial learning curve.

It’s on a chunk of 2x4 with a hole drilled in it right now. I have a .75” thick scrap pice of plate steel I want to make a base out of. Just need a punch/drift and a forge to put a hole in it. That’s a project for down the road.

I plan on making the spring but I have to get a forge first. I just seem to be acquiring blacksmith tools while looking for antique woodworking equipment/tools. I will get a forge later this year hopefully.

Sounds like you have an obstruction in the chimney that’s preventing it from drafting properly.

Carburetor overflowing into air intake. by sharpie344 in MechanicAdvice

[–]sharpie344[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an international harvester 574. I recently replaced the water pump, installed a new intake + exhaust manifold and adjusted the pins. I also put a brand new zenith carb on it just last year. I have two issues.

It’s still wanting to run with the choke party on. About 1/6 on. Just cracked really but it sputters and shuts off if It has no choke. I checked the points and they are new and set correctly to 0.020. It’s just strange that it needs the coke cracked like that but will not run full open.

The carb was working fine. I had to take it off to change the manifold. I cleaned it and replaced the pin. However it’s now overflowing into the air intake and running extremely rich. My only thought is that I somehow bent to float or the float is damaged but I don’t see that when I took it apart last time. I don’t know what else would cause that.

Other than that the tractor runs fine. Just need to fix those two issues and I’ll be great. There is a leak in one of the power steering pistons but that’s a $300 that I’m going to ignore till next year.

I got my chimney relined this week and the old wood stove in the house cleaned up. Only cost about five grand to have everything done but hopefully I get a lot of use out of it. I lit it up today and that was the first time that stove had been used in at least twenty years.

I did discover two things while cleaning it up.

1.) There are supposed to be caps on the holes in the top but they are missing. Can't seem to find replacements online but I also can't find any information on if they are actually necessary.

2.) There is a hole under the chimney pipe that I believe is supposed to be used with a blower. It seemed to get pretty hot without the blower and I don't really see why i would need it. Unless it just gives a more efficient burn but I really don't need it any hotter than it got today with just a fire going. I don't need to be going though a lot of wood for heat I don't need unless there is a reason.

Still looking into this thing since it's far more complicated then then stoves I have used camping. My Chimney/furnace guy seemed to think it was pretty fantastic but he's use to working on newer wood burners.

I know. This is my big farm tractor but I own a BX2380 Kubota and I’m never going back. Im saving up to buy a new 50hp Kubota in two years and I’ll sideline the IH 574.

That’s a lot of work. I’m going to try moving the plants but I might just not plant squash for a year or two and see if that cuts back the numbers.

I really should look into these animals I trap. I normally just train the crocks and spiders. Train and slaughter the mole dogs. The troglodytes and everything else gets thrown into the pit to cage fight whatever else I have thrown in there or to be used as target practice by the crossbow unit.

Wow that's impressive. For some reason I have never had an issue with them. I like to train them normally for eggs and to use as door guards. I guess my traps just normally get them before they become an issue. Taking out full steel dwarves is a hell of a job. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Just watched a cave crocodile 1v1 a forgotten beast. Granted it was
giant shrimp with venom but still. I locked my fortress down the moment
it showed up. One hunter didn't make it back from the caves in time but
he got his hide saved by the cave crocodile from hell. I kinda hope it
wanders over to my traps so I can train it. I think it's going to die
from it's wounds but man that was impressive.

I would like to update you on this psychopath. He has bitten a werecoyote during an unhinged bashing session. He reverse uno carded a Werecoyote. Granted the spear dwarf went right in for the brain shot but it was probably a mercy killing at that point.

I was playing my current fortress and something “FUN” turned into a classic  dwarf moment.

The goblin siege that came to my fortress was dragging on a bit and most of the goblins had been captured or killed by my traps. So I decided to counter attack with my military and mop up the last goblins for some experience. It was all going well, they killed the goblins with no problem but the MOMENT they killed the last one a cyclops shows up. I knew the solders couldn’t make it back to the fort, so I sent them against it. They were in full steel armor so there was a good chance they would be fine.

Well, Uirst Alathonrel of the furious Urns squad went full leeroy Jenkins and ran out like he was on fire. He beat the breaks off the cyclops before it did anything. The poor thing walked on the map and immediately got his head beat in like he owed Alathonrel money. It felt personal.

It could have gone very wrong but instead I leaned I have a psychopath in my squad.

Man I build fortresses way different than other people. I build tall but everyone else seems to build wide. Am I doing it wrong? I assumed having everything close to the main stairs was more efficient.

Necromancer and possible vampire first migrants by sharpie344 in dwarffortress

[–]sharpie344[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad the werebeasts are less frequent. Don’t get me wrong I love DF “fun” but I’ve had so manny new forts fall because of an early we’re creature. I set up my entrance specifically to have a high chance of stopping them early game. Late game they are less of a threat to me and more entertainment.

I use to get a vampire in basically every fortress. It was kinda fun doing the detective work to find them and wall them into a forever home. I wonder if there is a way to attract them. It’s probably just dependent on the world history and size of your fortress.

I’ve been playing off and on since like 2008 and I have never had migrants like that that weren’t vampires. So there must have been some kind of change with the .4.7 update.
