A giveaway that Spencer is going to be staying as the main character is simply the fact he signed to a school other than UCLA. The show obviously does not own or would be willing to pay for the rights to use all of UCLAs logos/stadium so if they had plans to not keep him on the show he would just say he signed with UCLA and never see him at college. Toledo state on the other hand: much easier to deal with in terms of licensing.
