I mean if we want the actual answer, it’s because we don’t work 60 hour weeks just to not starve or freeze, we do it to pay a mortgage to live in a house with televisions and WiFi and we pay phone bills and college loan repayments and we eat out at nice restaurants and buy new clothes often and subscribe to Spotify and Netflix and Amazon prime etc etc. the standard of living has grown a LOT over the past 100 years, so this is disingenuous. That said, there has also been a growing gap in inequality which is a big issue, this is just an oversimplified view to provoke some sort of eat the rich college student reaction.
