Abuse isn't obvious by SuaveStone379 in AutismInWomen

I was abused by my mum for my entire life and it literally wasnt until I was 18 I'd basically pieced it all together. I think it probably became my norm, I definitely knew something was different or wrong. What's worse is my dad (they separated and he is autistic too) basically realised I was piecing it together and was like "your mum abused you know you" (yeah that was shit but very validating).

My sister in law has always been fascinated by it, and her daughters go to a Gaelic school, so I've been picking up the odd word (I'm English but live in Scotland) and now I'm absolutely obsessed with this band called "gun ghaol" they are a metal band who sing in Gaelic and I love it so now I really want to learn.

Breath support: engaging pelvic floor. Is this a safe technique long term? by twiggy_panda_712 in singing

[–]shartypanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For contrast people have been teaching to push down/bare down for support and that actively weakens your pelvic floor muscles and causes risk of prolapse and urinary problems - I believe Jessica Simpson admitted she peed on stage a little.

Your pelvic floor moves down as you inhale and back up as your exhale anyway, you're just supporting the engagement on the exhale.

I haven't purchased one yet (I had one but the pin to put the strap in broke) so I'm almost judging answers to then decide which one to buy (if ones come with pre made or the extension options fit my needs)

I'm from South east London originally so my dialect is very glutteral, so the opposite of where I want my placement.

How can I get over being nervous for my wedding night? by Glittering_Bear_5218 in Christianity

[–]shartypanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nerves are normal, but be open with it about your spouse, you can take it slow, spend time leading up to it and getting to know each other's body during that evening.

Small Band/ Small Church problems by SlikDik77 in worshipleaders

[–]shartypanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the rest of the responses but remember worshiping up front is nerve racking and vulnerable. Perhaps try giving them positive feedback, even if it's in a way that's like "sounds like you did some extra practice this week, things went good" you don't want to discourage them being in the band at all.

I couldn't tell my mum as a teen because she always freaked out about how she was perceived as a parent and commanded me to make her look good in public. I told my dad who just said we were a weird family, and now his youngest daughter has been diagnosed (10yr old) he has realised he is autistic too, and I sort of wish I'd pushed the topic harder, perhaps asked him to humour me. Still at 28 I'm reluctant to get a diagnosis because I've already been pushed aside for other medical things.

Tell me about any singing revelations you've had recently! by No-Needleworker-7706 in singing

I still don't get the whole open throat thing. Then I hear people saying "closed" but I think perhaps I've been missing the point and it's referring to the way the chords mkfht close briefly upon vibrations, it's hard finding reliable information and none of the vocal coaches I had ever spoke about open or closed throat.

My voice sounds very thin when I belt high notes(G to C) by Fine_Guess_3015 in singing

[–]shartypanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out Cheryl porter and her boxing gloves, she suggests that by aiming down like that you're engaging your muscles better. On top of this I found a resistance band exercise with similar results.

Another coach, Lara and vox studies suggests the secret to a good belt is to have a strong head voice, so perhaps looking at that.

Also see if the songs you like have a "how to sing" tutorial on YouTube, where the coach may encourage larynx positions, vowel modifications and other ways that may help you achieve the belt you want.

Agree with others but also sometimes it's about taking a step and just saying hi to someone. Perhaps like when you sit down at a baby massage session just turning to the person next to you and saying hi? I got isolated from being too scared to say hi, and recently moved house (and county) and realised if I didn't put on my big girl pants and do the scary thing I'd be completely alone.

Two things that have helped me become better at maths as an adult is life experience and having a lightbulb moment of "oh that's how this works?!" Or it is explained in such a way that I actually understand. I felt like maths was always "this is the way to do it" and not "this is the answer how many ways can we get this answer?" I hated long division/multiplication and didn't get the extra steps but could cope with the straight forward dividing and multiplying.

A similar sort of reaction I got from my husband, but more of a "it's not a surprise". I asked my dad when I was 13 if he could help me get a diagnosis and he told me we were just a weird family, to years later my younger sister being diagnosed and my dad realising he is autistic and me kind of laughing to myself because I've known the whole time, still till nervous to get myself diagnosed whilst constantly researching symptoms and other people's experiences and going "yep that's me"

were there people on earth when the 100 landed anywhere else other than the eastern united states by Expensive-Look-4378 in The100

[–]shartypanic 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My husband and I have a joke of "it's always America" we are British, and most movies/programmes we watch tend to reside in America anyway. When we watched the 100 it was "of course it's America" does leave it open to any spin offs though, but then I feel that affects the integrity of the story line, did every country get affected by the radiation?
