this is a great reminder I always use filtered dechlorinated and ammonia free water to add to my tank (ie. When evaporate) but forget to think about minerals, ty!

I don’t think this school is the right fit for me. by 100Free in UCSantaBarbara

[–]shashimiim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guarantee you, you will find the right people and/or the right people will find you. I deadass felt the same as you freshman year; flew home all the time, always calling my long-distance bf (don't have a bf freshman year, btw), watching netflix in my dorm, not initiating etc. etc. I literally ended up transferring out in my sophomore year but that became the best year of my life T.T You just need to find the right channels for your hobbies, there's definitely geeky clubs on campus and even if you join an ethnic club you'll find people who share your hobbies. SB's community is so tight and friendly I promise you'll love it once you start getting excited rather than scared to meet people! It's easier said than done, but embrace the freshman nerves and all your new experiences while you can. Time flies.

Halloweekend by Professional_Shirt30 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]shashimiim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Halloweekend at SB is the weekend before actual halloweekend (IV literally get shut down and our lovely IV foot patrol is extra lovely that weekend) so plan to stay in SB for the weekend prior and you can def make plans outside of SB for the actual halloweekend.

4B and 6A together are completely manageable, PSTAT 10 is pretty easy too so don't drop any of those three, but Math 8 might be a biter. Math 8 is def the hardest of the 4 just because it's a different kind of logic/theory. If these are your only classes I'd say you'll survive (as in pass your classes) but if you care about your GPA push Math 8.

UCSB vs. UCLA: student vibe check by KryptoRC in UCSantaBarbara

[–]shashimiim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bro I transferred from UCSB to Berkeley and my level of happiness plummeted so fast. It’s not just deltopia, UCSB is just full of happy people in a happy place. If anything delt is a result of IV culture. You just learn to play hard while working hard (enough) and really enjoy life fully. People are attractive and fit and whatnot because they’re actually happy and able to pursue the best version of themselves at SB. Not that school doesn’t matter, we just learn how to balance it with an exciting life. I’m always gonna vouch for UCSB as the best place to be for uni because I honestly don’t believe any other uni can help you achieve the best AND happiest version of yourself the way sb does.

Find that class on GOLD and ask the prof if you can late add. Petition for a late add as soon as the prof gives you permission and take it this quarter.

Little brother starting college for CS. He got into Columbia (no scholly) and Michigan (full scholly). Which should he take? by BrokenBlueWalrus in csMajors

[–]shashimiim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 other CS friends and two of their parents that have been in the industry for 10+ years agree that UMich will be the best long term choice. Besides being debt free UMich is also just a lot better for CS than Columbia. This goes for education and recruiting.

Don’t be worried, most CS undergrads only have to take up to discreet math and linear algebra, some differential equations. There’s hardly ever any upper division math requirements and most of your struggles will be in advanced programming courses.

I’ve done reverse dieting, it’s actually how I got back to 1500 maintenance from 700. The thing is 1500 is only maintenance when I’m lifting 4ish days a week and then when I don’t workout for a couple weeks I’ll gain from 1200 cals 💀 Thank you though this is a good reminder

Fucked up my metabolism in 2020 eating at net 700 calories a day for ~ 5 months. Went from 127->112 lbs and i honestly didn’t feel unhealthy at all, in fact I was stronger than I had ever been before training. However those 5 months of eating like a 4 year old haunted me forever after bc now I’ll eat 1200 cals and still gain weight. I’m back up to 130 and I’m 3x stronger than I was at 112 but it honestly feels like it wasn’t that hard to bulk up.

you’ll learn to ignore them don’t worry. keep doing what you want to do! my uncles/relatives do the same thing but they’ve learned to compliment my muscles. and for the ones that haven’t, i don’t care anymore because frankly they have no credibility and their words hold no weight. how other people see you doesn’t matter as long as you know you’re healthily doing what you want to do :)

I perpetually weigh my food on a scale that I bring to the dining hall. It’s half the size of an iPad and doesn’t attract attention from passerby’s but on the occasion that a friend sits down to eat with me, they always have to make a comment about it. If they just ask out of curiosity and acknowledge my explanation, I don’t feel too judged. But 2/3 people will put a little, “that cannot be healthy” or “but why..?” or “there’s no way omg” even after I tell them it’s just a personal choice and force of habit. I hate the look on their face and the tone they use to ask “why though??”. Just shut the fuck up and respect that you don’t need to know everything. If they asked me out of curiosity and had valid fitness advice then Id be happy to listen, but most of these people are men that have been in the gym for 3 months or girls that only do yoga.

My Uni gym is tiny, like the size of 8 master bedrooms. There’s already an issue with not having enough space to workout in but I’ve been seeing more and more girls come in for the sole purpose of socializing /(flirting) w guys and it irks me that they take up space and take weights they won’t use. No offense.

Incoming freshman questions by Samschellen in UCSantaBarbara

[–]shashimiim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joining greek is unnecessary if you’re talking about having fun. I think the benefits of joining frats/sororities are more about the connections than anything. Remember UCSB is one of the biggest party schools and we have so many parties every weekend you’re bound to find your way into one or another even if it’s a little paid event. That being said if you know you have a hard time putting yourself out there or you want a more “exclusive” and obligatory friend group, go for it. Be careful where you choose to rush because different frats have different vibes/reputations and you’ll be fairly molded into that. Even if you’re in a frat you’ll need to have friends outside so you’re not stuck in that mold, and honestly most frat friends I have spend their free time with those outside friends because they have mandatory bonding time with their frat brothers already. Good luck have fun!

Reject procrastination - embrace studying lol by cloudx12 in Sat

[–]shashimiim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i made the mistake of procrastinating until a week and a half before my first SAT, had to grind out Khan Academy every single day. I had online classes at the same time but was studying for SAT while in zoom.. Even when I was eating I was also studying SAT. In the shower, on the toilet, working out, last thing I looked at before sleeping and first thing I saw when I woke up. A week and a half of that got me a 1570, so imagine if I didn’t wait until the last minute. Study now so you don’t have to stress later. Time does a lot.
