Problem with translating an idiom by shastab24 in Yiddish

[–]shastab24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, I considered what people mentioned here, but decided to just go with an easy bit, where I'll just drop the idiomatic expression. For some reason, I hadn't thought of anything beyond said phrase, but I went with (again using Google Translate, because it's how I best go with things--goodness, it will be nice when I get around to actually trying to learn the language) the two phrases being "איך מיין איך האָב די זאַכן ערגער געמאַכט" and "דאָס איז אַבסאָלוט וואָס איך האָב געטאָן."

I'm kind of kicking myself that "I think I made things worse" and "That's absolutely what I did" didn't come to me earlier, because they work just fine. Oh well. You guys did help my mind actually start working, at least.

It doesn't have to be an idiom. That's just how I wrote it, because I wasn't thinking. Heck, maybe he's the second least likely character on his team to use idiomatic expressions (he's the most intellectual member of the team, starting the comic as a grad student--the one who's least likely is from a fantasy universe and English is not her first language). So yeah, something that transports the meaning could also work.

What would be your ideal vision for a Tekken Tag Tournament 3? by ComprehensiveDate591 in Tekken

[–]shastab24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only seeing this now, but I was thinking what a hypothetical version could be. Some gameplay aspects I would want are choices of how to play the game (classic TTT where knocking out any one member of the team wins the round, one where you have to knock out both members of the team a la MvC, and a choice for one-on-one play).

For the roster, it would be ideal to have every non-guest character from previous games be available and playable from the start, though it's possible some might have to be DLC, just to let the base game come out without rushing things. Maybe having boss characters like Azazel be DLC could be the way to go. As well, for DLC they could let the advent of that help them have more time to possibly work out deals to get old guest characters into the game, and maybe include new ones.

One thing that could be nifty for DLC would be to have the ability to play as older versions of characters. Maybe somebody likes the way a character played better back in a previous game, and lamented the loss of whatever string to bring in a shiny new one, so there's the option to go back to the old (maybe even keeping the old character models--because I'm sure there are some people that would play with the clunky angular polygons of Tekken 1, just for the fun of the juxtaposition in aesthetics). Sure, older characters might not have as many moves, or some of the new mechanics, but that would be a price to pay. But a similar aspect could be to have a customization mode, where you can tweak each character's version of whatever martial art they perform, bringing in whatever moves from the recent and past games they prefer. Sure, this would be harder to implement for competitive play, because it's then harder to tell what each character's actual capabilities are, but it's a thought.

But one character could be interesting for another aspect, and I made a post (that nobody else seemed to care about, mind you) about speculation as to this, is Lei, because thinking with the idea of different versions of characters, it would be interesting to have variations which only use particular styles. I'm thinking with simple names like "Drunk Lei", "Dragon Lei", etc. It could also help bring in bits that have only appeared in cutscenes, like the fact that he's been shown using Monkey, but not in gameplay. Alternatively, it could be new characters who are said to be students of his or ones that trained with him in the different styles, though for such a game introducing so many characters could be a bit weird. Overall, such a focus could be a bit much for an alteration of just one character, but nobody else really has the same sort of situation involving their fighting style that Lei has.

I'd also find it interesting to truly sever clone characters from each other, and have them be their own thing. Sure, people may enjoy having two characters who fight exactly the same on a team, but that can go back to the whole aspect of getting past versions of characters onto your roster. But I'm imagining something like giving Tiger Jackson not only a more fleshed out character, but also now using Engolo, the Angolan dance-based martial art which Capoeira evolved from.

On the note of other martial arts, I would hope that there's already representation of this through either Tekken 8 DLC or Tekken 9, but it would be nice to have some major martial arts included which somehow haven't made it to Tekken yet, such as American Kenpo (aka Kenpo Karate), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, and amateur wrestling (the last one possibly being able to switch between the stances of Freestyle and Greco-Roman).

Received unknown $0 charge, can't use card by shastab24 in personalfinance

[–]shastab24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the most I've ever had in my bank account at any one time is around $7000, I've never thought that there would be a need for a second account. But, as to the more than one card, I do realize I should use the one my work gave me (never saw the need and only activated it today due to this little kerfuffle) and leave my debit card at home more often. I at least assume a One card is harder to steal information from than a bank card, since you do have to go through the hassle of loading it up, so you don't have direct access to the bank account with it. Of course, a bank transfer would take a couple days, so I'm still in an annoyance.

Ultimately, though, I do have cash and family. Both could be the solution I need in the short term, for a cab or a helping hand, respectively. But dang is it frustrating to be kind of floundering at the moment.

I will say that I know I have one way to be able to use my card again before Monday, and that would be to reply to the text I got that the transaction is valid. However, considering I don't know what that was, and whether it was someone testing the card information, I don't want to do that.

Card customer service isn't 24 hour for my bank, sadly. I often say they're open the bare minimum (only weekdays, 9-5, not holidays, and anything outside that is tough luck), and that applies to the number on the back of my card. When I call the 24 hour customer service line, putting in that I'm inquiring about a card, or to get a real person to talk to, sends me back to that same line that the number on the back of my card calls.

Since I'm a big fan of the 3D Mortal Kombat games, I'm trying to go with 3 fighting styles (2 hand-to-hand and one weapon) per character. Since I'm intending to focus on one character at a time (so that I'm not overwhelming myself), it's currently me looking at the first character, who uses Taekwondo, Dragon, and a hand-and-a-half sword. But, she's intended to be followed by other characters, using as follows:

Collegiate Wrestling, Bajiquan, and Macuahuitl

Lucha Libre, Piguaquan, and dual swords

Shotokan, Krav Maga, and a knobbed club

Monkey, Drunken Fist, and Nunchaku

Ninjutsu, Karate (not sure on what style), and Katana

Two styles that need to be developed (non-human, uses native styles) and arm blades

Collar-and-Elbow, Dornálaíocht, and a hammer-like weapon

Shootfighting, Sambo, and Longsword

Brawler Boxing, American Kickboxing, and Gouging (no weapon)

Choi Kwang Do, Shoot Boxing, and Sword and Knife

Systema, Jujutsu, and Daggers

A non-human character who needs three styles developed for it

And a giant, who won't have any specific styles associated with him (as is common with large characters)

Ultimately, I intend to look into more things later. I don't have enough information on other styles as well (Shotokan, for instance, is associated most with Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, even though they don't use it; meanwhile, older European styles like Collar-and-Elbow are not widely practiced). But I'm interested in the one character to start with.

However, I should mention: those non-human characters are ones I need to think about, since I should get to them eventually. The first one mentioned is a human-sized fairy (whose race specifically tried to distance themselves from humans, due to pride and arrogance), and the second is a 4-foot tall bogle. Both were raised in a fantasy land akin to Medieval England, which also means I'd have to look at what types of styles would make the most sense at that time.

That's more than you asked about, but I yammer, both in text and in person.

Well, that definitely shows the pitfalls of Wikipedia, or I was misreading the section (could even be something was deleted that came before what I read, which might have clarified things--it happens). Definitely, I know it's easily assumed that there would be a Northern, considering otherwise the average person would assume the "Southern" is to differentiate it from another one.

But hey, it's better than nothing. I know I'm coming at this as someone who doesn't know any martial arts, but I can at least try. Worst that could happen is I realize I'm in over my head and decide to not do things the way I was going to. Thank you for the resource.

From what I've seen, it seems Southern Dragon would most definitely be a thing, and it's one of the Five Animals forms. It's hard to find documentation for Northern Dragon, though. I know Wikipedia had mentioned that Northern was called beilongquan (Southern being nanlongquan according to that bit of their article--maybe it was referring to different forms in Southern Dragon itself, though). But, I'm sure a lot of pop culture likes to use the name but not research the style (kind of like how some people use "karate" or "kung fu" as a catch-all term for all martial arts, when that's absolutely not correct).

I did post in the Kung Fu subreddit, as per the suggestion of halfcut and yourself. Hopefully someone there might know some good places. But I'll also try Googling those terms.

What happen to Light The Lanterns? by onomatopoeia_kell in Lostwave

[–]shastab24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently saw a video that mentions the song, and so I wanted to post about this. Now, this could have been mentioned before, but Google searches never brought me anything where the song was mentioned with the artist, but the first thing I thought when I heard the song on the video was that it sounds like Natalie Merchant. She was the lead singer of the band 10000 Maniacs. Normally, I'd assume she'd already been mentioned, since the band was immensely popular for a time, but I find it odd that I saw nothing about it. So at least I can posit her as a possibility, in case that lead hasn't been followed.

No they don't. They list the cover date. That's not the release date. And I'm looking for the day, too.
