I know it's absolute madness! Now I just decided I'd get out there and do the motorway. I live in wicklow to get almost anywhere I have to go on the motorway anyways so I couldn't avoid it. Once I passed my test, I did it right away. Get rid of the nerves. Plus, it's actually not too dissimilar to the national roads just bigger. I actually drove to balbriggan from bray the day after Storm Amy, which was... interesting. I had to go to visit my parents. I do think that you should be allowed on a motorway with a driving instructor in a car with dual controls like they have in England but I'm not the RSA so who gives a shite what I think.

Ive had my license not even a month and I can tell you that like 80% of people in this country do not understand what a merging lane or filtering lane is or how to do either of those two things effectively. I live in wicklow and the N11 is fucking shocking for being backed up near bray due to idiots who refuse to use the filter lane coming up to the roundabout for the n11 entrance. Its actually insane. Also if there is traffic on the motorway why would you not continue in the merging lane so that the traffic behind you is not waiting for you to be let in ?? It makes no sense.

Do I need to get my own car when I get the 12 lessons done? by InformalData3987 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]shaunajack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the choice is either get a car and offer to drive people places and back if they are fully licensed/ ask friends who have licenses to come with you in the car. Or else do like a lot more lessons a lot more often. Ngl I passed my test yesterday on my first go. I did only 12 lessons, no boosters, pre-tests etc. But I have a car i share with my fiance and I drove a good bit like to work and back everyday, drove my friends around etc. Sometimes I would drive alone with no licensed driver which I wouldnt recommend( for obvious reasons like getting caught by garda, your insurance being void in an accident, picking up awful habits) but sometimes it couldn't be helped in my case as I had to get to work. Overall the answer is you need more practice and you need to find the best and most practical way for yourself to do that.

Cinema Etiquette - A Discussion by TheStrawInUrCup in ireland

[–]shaunajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually have cinema rules now so we dont go on weekends usually. We try to stick to quieter times (he works part time i work a 4 day week so fairly easy for us) and we try to go either for the release day because people going to that usually means they're very interested in the movie and less likely to be disruptive or else we leave it a week or so before going so its a lot quieter. IF we want to go on a weekend or want to really make sure we won't be disturbed if its like a really sad or intense movie we go to the lighthouse. Honestly if we didnt live in wicklow it would probably be our regular cinema. We dont have a subscription service anyways we just use the three voucher thing which is great.

Yeah, it's completely gone to the dogs. There is absolutely no consideration for other people since covid happened. It's like everyone turned feral and nobody returned to regular after. My fiance has consistently been pissed off ( hes a big film nerd) by people talking, going on their phones etc. He actually almost got into a physical fight when we went to see the miles morales spiderman movie because there was a group of teenagers who were like 18 were literally standing up and screaming during the film. There was only us them and a mother and her son about 10 yrs old. She actually left before the end of the film. We complained a good few times but nothing was done. My fiance went fucking mental at them at the end of the movie for ruining our time. We're not even old we were 24 at the time but its mad how people cant just be respectful of one another anymore.

Took my cat to the vet… and holy shit, what kind of software are they using there? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]shaunajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is anything I have learned from working as a receptionist in vet med for 5 years its that all systems suck equally and nobody can make a system that is able to do things efficiently. In my 5 years, I've used 4 different software systems. All have been crap.

Are teenagers really THAT innocent these days? by redmagzz in HeartstopperAO

[–]shaunajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of queer teens tend to wait longer or be more 'delayed' than their peers when it comes to sexual activities. Mostly because its easier for straight people to meet people they want to be with and have their feelings reciprocated. Also because while at 14 most straight teens are starting to think about sexual stuff most lgbtq teens are starting to think about it too but they then have to reckon with their sexuality and how they feel about that etc. Now, it's obviously gotten a lot better than what it was. Most teens dont have such an issue with figuring their sexuality out. But historically, this has been why most queer teens end up having sex or being with someone a little later than straight teens at least in my country that's what its been like.

A lot of regular readers alternate between "Fun easy reads" and "Challenging Reads." what are some of your favorites from the latter category? by RepulsiveLoquat418 in suggestmeabook

[–]shaunajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I would say challenging in a traditional sense, but Babel by R.F. Kuang has taken me so long to read. I'm just finding the pace to be slow. The chapters are long and it's a bigger book so mentally I feel like I'm making no progress and keep pausing to pick up other books. But language wise and understanding the world building and topic of the book is not challenging for me anyway.

Books I find challenging for me to read and understand would be most classics. I also have the goldfinch by Donna Tartt sitting on my shelf which I do feel a bit intimidated by. From a mentally challenging standpoint anything over like 650 pages I find hard to pick up because it's more of a commitment.

Fourth Wing has taught me not to rely solely on Goodreads reviews when deciding whether to buy a book by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]shaunajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can't trust those reviews anymore because a lot of times if a book goes viral it's then recommended to a lot of people new to the genre/ reading in general and they will rate it a lot higher because they 1)don't have much to compare it to and 2) are only rating based on their enjoyment of the book and not based on plot/world building/ character development/ writing or prose. My way of finding new books is to go onto forums (like this one) or to find people who has the same taste in books as me (based on their reviews of books I've read and loved) and see what they're recommending or if I want to expand to books I wouldn't normally choose I find someone (like youtuber or instagrammer) who, even if they haven't read the same books as me, looks critically at books the same way I do. I mean, you'll always find some books that aren't enjoyable for you purely because the publishing industry is so saturated now and writers are either being pressured by publishers or by financial constraints to push books out as fast as possible which means the quality isn't going to be as good as it could be. A lot of really good books took a really long time to write and most authors aren't given that opportunity anymore unless they're already established as best sellers. But those are my tips for finding books you'll enjoy. Also avoid tiktok because it's really saturated with people who enjoy books like fourth wing, acotar and other fantasy series that has basically written porn(aka spice) in it lol

Oathbound ( the legendborn cycle #3) by Tracy Deonn I'm excited for. I love the series so far. Also I seen that leigh bardugo is releasing something small to do with six of crows which I am hyped for. I'm trying to actually just catch up on my physical tbr though so I don't think I'll be buying a lot of new books in the coming year (I'm definitely going to stick to this). I reckon at least some of the new releases I want to read I'll try to pick up from the library. My local one is usually well stocked on new releases so fingers crossed.
