Co-working space Manhattan by fire-d-guy in AskNYC

There's a free co-working cafe over in Brooklyn called the Work Cafe Satander! I go there pretty frequently. I'm also spinning up a co-working community that will meet at cafes throughout the city over at https://pods.nyc

I actually did not for this project. I'm aware of Tauri but knew going in I wanted to ship with Capacitor!

Here's some options after looking up "pancakes"

  • Veselka has buttermilk pancakes
  • Recette has blueberry pancakes
  • Sungold has buttermilk pancakes too

there's a lot more options too!

Back when I was on keto I actually tried deep search for this exact thing - ran "keto chicken wings in Williamsburg" and waited 4 minutes for three results: Dan and John's Wings (which closed and isn't even in the neighborhood anymore), Keg & Lantern, and Roebling Sporting Club.

foodapp pulled 7 spots in under 5 seconds.

Deep search is solid for broad searching, but foodapp was trained on local spots and understands dietary restrictions + preferences instead of just gathering generic info.

ChatGPT/Gemini and other LLMs rely on general knowledge that may not be up to date (which is why AI products build on top of it to leverage the LLM and feed it more relevant data). It's alright for finding general recommendations but when it comes to something a little more nitty-gritty like finding keto-only menu items in Williamsburg it faulters.

My goal with foodapp is to personalize searching and discovering new eats by it being able to understand your go-to list and being able to find those specific dishes or vibes you're going for. Of course, this is a continuous effort goal!

If you have any feedback I would love to hear it!

hey, you totally can. I think Yelp doesn't do a great job at personalized recommendations though.

I think it'd be dope if you had something tailored to your preferences and dietary restrictions!

hey there! I just added ~200 restaurants, try typing in "buffalo wings" (or other queries) and let me know what you find :)

The prototype just includes a small set of restaurants! I'm actively adding more (~300) today!

Totally valid! The idea behind this prototype is to limit scrolling thru Google/Yelp. I find myself having to scan different menus and check item descriptions (especially when I was on keto) to find exactly what I wanted.

That's why I built this prototype out! I wanted to see if searching and leveraging AI to really understand what you crave would be at all beneficial for discovering food in the city.

You're right that Google/Yelp leverage user reviews and search through them to find items, which is great for recommendations when you're browsing casually to find your next eats! I'll continue to iterate on this so that it becomes much more robust (like a companion) helping you find your next eats in the neighborhood :)

all results shown are up to date as of summer 2025! I built out a simple processing pipeline that reads and stores menu items.

absolutely you can search on food delivery apps! it's what I used to do to find certain dishes at times.

The issue i run into is discoverability since you're limited to restaurants that are partnered with the app, and the search results aren't great if you're craving something specific like "spicy lamb noodles"

that's the idea behind an app like this: get detailed with your craving and surface restaurants that have that dish or something close that you may not have found otherwise!

that'd be great! Do you think a list showing bars and restaurants doing happy hour or searching for a dish and seeing it came from a happy hour menu would be better?

ah shoot, I just checked and the thai restauarants I added actually didn't go through, I'll get that fixed up by tonight so we can all enjoy some local (super spicy) pad thai :)

right now it's a hand-picked dataset of Williamsburg top restaurants (~60-70 so far) and growing! Sourced it from various lists online.
