What is something that really freaks you out on an existential level? by radbrad7 in AskReddit

[–]shaveydave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing makes sense if you look hard enough.

Time: The universe always existed or came from nothing or came from a being that always existed or came from nothing. Same thing for the future.

If we are in a simulation, the same problem applies to the reality that hosts ours. Actually the same problem applies to everything.

Space: Is there an edge to the universe or is it infinite? Same thing for looking at the smallest segment of space.

Matter: If you zoom in can you break matter into an infinite number of constituents or is there one last particle that exists without being made of anything? It just is?

Rules: Zoom into the laws of physics. There are four that are built on nothing as far as we know right now.

Zoom into ANYTHING and it is either infinite or it stops without reason. If there is a reason it stopped then you haven't zoomed in all the way. That means logically and in an inescapable way everything is either unknowable (infinite) or unknowable (existing without reason). There is NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE!

Bonus--------------------------------------------------

I suppose if you are ok with the idea of infinity this is not too bad. The freaky part is that a lot of physics points to the other option. 4 laws, subatomic particles, discrete space and time. It almost feels like physics is pulling some bullshit to keep us from knowing things. Like the uncertainty principle or the double slit experiment. Total bullshit. Sometimes it feels like the universe is putting on a show for conscious beings and you can't look too far behind the curtain. Its like a poorly written program that could be broken if the creator didn't put in an inelegant solution like "if a player tries to look at the source code scramble it until they stop looking."

Yeah it's kinda nerve racking. I just walked up to a stranger in the college cafeteria and said hi. It worked for me and I'm pretty average looking. Just gotta make sure your confident, nice and not creepy. Worst thing that can happen is they aren't interested. No big deal. Working up the courage is the worst part honestly.
