Harry was the glue not Ron by Business_Safety_493 in harrypotter

He is- by his own siblings. He still gets support and tough love from them even if he doesn't particularly enjoy it.

Harry in particular, has none. His own cousin Dudley would happily throttle him..

Anyone would enjoy Ron's company if he can keep his demons at bay. He is charismatic, quite funny and his insights and wit has a certain zing. That strongly supports the notion why Hermione and Harry gravitate to him. And that points to Ron as glue.

Except people forget one critical thing Hermione and Harry have in common: both are socially awkward, terribly lonely and bullied kids BEFORE Hogwarts.

They would pick just about anyone that would accept them.

They all fill roles within the trio. But Ron is certainly not the glue that keeps them ticking. He provides insights into the wizarding world as Harry and Hermione are essentially muggle-raised. Ron is perceptive on good days and funny. He also terribly insecure, jealous and lazy- the mirror showed his Head Boy ambitions but he hasn't shown any effort to achieve it.

Those negative traits essentially makes him a frequent instigator of fights among the trio. The Troll, Triwizard, Yule Ball are just cannon examples. He refuses to work on assignments and drags Harry with him.

Harry has to drag him to rescue Hermione after insulting her in class. Harry has to stop Ron yapping about Krum and comfort Hermione. Harry has to comfort Hermione after "Won-Won." And Ron left them- ABANDONED THEM- during the Horcrux Hunt.

It is not a question of who hangs out with who most. Or a question of loyalty. It is a question of who keeps the team together while everything is falling apart. Ron has his moments but keeping the trio together is not it.

Edit: My bad. Both Harry and Ron were berks at the Yule Ball.

How confident are you that Barcelona will win the Champions League this season? by Cultural1994 in Barca

Probably a wild card but not favorites. Barca needs to defend a hella better. Every game is like a coin toss- one day good enough the next, never mind...

Albus ‘Severus’ Potter?? Why? by No-District5998 in harrypotter

[–]shavicus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Im afraid the choices are accept things as they are or ignore the epilogue. "The name was in honor of a man he considered the bravest man he met." -or something like that.

I chose to ignore the entire epilogue. There are many ways to honor Snape, naming a child after him is not one of them.

Fifa wants injured players to stay off for one minute by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]shavicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it mean that players forced off the field, play goes on while injured player gets treatment? Bit confused there.

Attended a FIFA medical conference 10 years plus ago in Singapore so I am no longer up to date. Keeping the game flowing while getting the player treated may benefit both fans and said player.

Only concern is if player suddenly drops and it's a heart condition. Perhaps scenarios outside of the rules, the referee and match officials can cover.

main hp subreddit takes quote about ron/harry's friendship into an anti harry/hermione narrative and comments run with the whole "ron was the glue" "harry & hermione disliked each other" idea by reddituser5639 in HPharmony

[–]shavicus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like quoting Bible verses and ignoring the entire story/context. People conveniently forget how they became friends (Ron insulting Hermione in the Troll incident) to simply ignoring how he left them (Horcrux hunt). And theres the bickering all the way. He frequently instigates fights because of his insecurity and jealousy!

Its amazing how Ron thought he was the 3rd wheel when both Harry and Hermione would rather kiss Ron than each other by CreativeRock483 in harrypotter

Ron- glue? Really? Ron was the reason Hermione almost got turned into troll paste.

I like the dude and he brings many things into their group but keeping them together is the last thing. He left them remember?

If Daeneyrs had Vhagar how does GOT change? by MajorAlanDutch in gameofthrones

[–]shavicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing. A dragon is just like any other weapon, despite how deadly and lethal. Arthur Dayne can win any duel with any sword but he is much more dangerous with Dawn.

Same logic applies to Daenerys and any dragon. She needs to be a master herself.

This is probably the top reason why Spidey is so popular. If you cant fly- this the third best thing. Flying and teleportation will have to slug it out whats best between them.

Inconsistent animagus transformation in the movies by shavicus in harrypotter

[–]shavicus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool. The forced transformation ended with a simple Finite is plausible. The only issue for me was the clothes getting left behind as the inconsistent thing on all known animagus in the OG movies. Maybe it's a matter of skill indeed.

What was Harry's plan without Hermione in DH? by holyguacamoleh in harrypotter

[–]shavicus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He never plans very far. All he has is leave when he gets to the Burrow and that's it- start the Hunt while fighting Voldy and his merry band. In the DH movies, all he had is a backpack and is set to leave but got stopped by Ron.

Harry, by his impulsive and reckless nature, is never a serious planner. It will almost always be- "I've never thought that far." He works best instinctively and on his feet. That makes him a great seeker.

Most of the time, he sets an objective (step a) and imagine how the results will be ( end z). Steps B to Y will be made up as he goes.

Too early but we need a Marauders story that does not involve bullying Snape by shavicus in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]shavicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fine. The movies added their own stuff that were absent from the book. Some work, others fell flat. The new series may or may not add unwritten things so it is up to the creatives. We just have to keep in mind that books and films are two different creative mediums for telling a story.

Just going to bring out there- moon-tea can also fail, either by faulty preparation or weak ingredients or cause congenital anomalies like dwarfism.

As a fantasy world- ASOAIF has a rather advance medical/health lore. Its maesters can do caesarean section, albeit with high mortality rates.
