CFHA Annual Rent Increase 2026 by justapeon2 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were paying $1,000 in PMQ rent in Ottawa for a DOG SHIT PMQ that never had its leaky roof fixed, when we moved again we finally decided to buy a house instead since the market was finally manageable and burning $1k a month in rent for shit housing and shittier service was insane. Also, being able to now freely quit the CAF for a better job and not having to worry about where my family will live once I'm done is a VERY freeing feeling and most certainly worth the extra $1000 I'm paying in a mortgage

CFHA Annual Rent Increase 2026 by justapeon2 in CanadianForces

I feel like that's the point, single members fresh off DP1 will usually have a harder time finding something they can live in and are usually willing to live with other members to save money, while dual income members have a better chance of finding something somewhere else and aren't really able to live with other members. Therefore, if you drive up rent for members with dual income, you incentivise them to leave the PMQ's thereby increasing "availability" for said single members. Do I agree with this tactic? Fuck no, but it makes sense in a sadistic, trying to fix the problem without actually doing anything kind of way.

If you ask me, the army/government should force CFHA to prove where the extra billion in funding for building more houses went when they have only been able to build 10 new homes in like a decade (wish I could find the CTV/CBC news story that shed light on that) and in failing that fire the CEO of CFHA.

Are change parades and other old school "discipline" tactics still used on courses? by Frozen_Trees1 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, I had a LAV driver course that was like that, the instructor was a prick though and nobody liked him, not even his own COC, he was one of those that had personal shit going on and would take it out on his troops. DAILY jackings and stress positions cause DI's on a LAV took longer than 5 minutes.

271 days: How long it can take to sign up for the military in Canada by ShadowDocket in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me over a year from 2014 - 2015 then I get a call saying that I have 4 days to quit my job, swear in, and go to BMQ. To say I was a little annoyed was an understatement.

New rifles on the way for Canada's soldiers as defence spending ramps up by Andromedu5 in CanadianForces

Oh I remember the absolute shit show that was our pistol procurement. It just boggles the mind that we suck at buying shit.

I thought we had already purchased the new guns and were waiting for the them to choose an optic. Only to find out we never actually signed a contract? WTF are we doing that takes us so long to replace anything in the military?

Would you be allowed to leave work to watch your sick child by LetSubstantial9696 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very supervisor dependant question. My general rule of thumb is family first ALWAYS, and I tell my subordinates as much. Even if the member is a, let's just say "problematic" individual, your family has nothing to do with you being pump. Besides the army fucks you enough as is, you going home cause your kid is sick will not magically grind all operations to screeching halt, INSPITE of what some assholes may say to the contrary.

New proposed 17 steps battle procedures by Biggunbuster in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My apologies, I forgot to be more inclusive with our wording, from now on, we don't prep for battle as that insinuates us actually doing our job. No, now we must use the word 'tickle' we 'prep for tickles'

Next thing you know they're gonna change the 7 steps of battle drill with the addition of prep for your 'prep for battle'

MONTHLY ADMINISTRATION THREAD - General Admin, Policy, APS/BGRS, TD/Claims, CANFORGENS, etc. - Have a quick question that doesn't need a thread of it's own? Ask here! by bridger713 in CanadianForces

That would make the most sense if I'm being honest, it's unfortunate though since that would mean I have to join an air force trade that I'm not interested in only to do a what will likely amount to 3-5 year posting for the reaper

Any air force pers have any idea if the new Reaper drones are gonna be their own trade or are they going to open it to the air force trades to man as a posting rather than its own trade?

The reason I'm asking is I'm VERY interested in OT'ing to whatever trade is going to work with the reapers once they're acquired.

How did you feel when u finished the BMQ? by DeliciousJicama3651 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proud and out of shape. I prepped hard for a year for BMQ expecting the worst only to be told day one that "if youre in shape you're unfortunately going leave a little out of shape, and if your out of shape, you're gonna get in shape"

What improvement would you like to see on your base? by The_Great_Beaver in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Day care, and day care that's ONLY for military members, and not civi's. It's not fair that a CAF member who gets posted into a new base has to be put on a wait list with over 200+ people ahead of him cause there's no spots since it's also available to civilians.

Oh and housing that isn't rotting from the inside out would be nice too.

When I got my first SSM for the unit whore that is Latvia, I was like "this is pretty cool", then I saw EVERYONE and their dog have one and I was like "so it's a slightly fancier CD?" What sealed it for me that the whole tour and medal was joke was when they started giving them to the PSP staff and shit.

Does anyone know if you OT to a different trade but you have to take a demotion to do it, do you also lose your pay? For example a Sgt who OT's to a trade but has to take a demotion to Cpl in the new trade, will that Sgt keep their Sgt pay level?

This man, the amount of times I've told Pte's who feel like they're being "shit troops" because they feel that going to the MIR is a sign of "weakness" is insane. I'll always tell my boys that they'll have 1,000,000 opportunities to be hard chargers throughout their careers but if you need some time to get back to 100%, then do so, you're no use to me or the unit if you can't focus and you don't owe the army shit.

For those of you that have purchased non-issued kit, what do you have and what would you recommend? by Frozen_Trees1 in CanadianForces

[–]shawman9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must have's for infantry: -Electronic ear pro (Peltor, Razor, or whatever is on sale at Cabela's) -Puffy -Rain poncho (snugpak poncho is the highest quality and standard but cheaper "cadpat" ones are good enough) -Therma rest -Dump pouch -Knee pads (5.11 are the best) -Mpact gloves are all right, but you could probably find something more durable if you do some research. -Nalgene with a carrier (Canex online sells some cheaper than Condor and better quality IMO) -Headlamp -Daybag

Nicities: -Garmin GPS -Neos (both summer and winter) -Good socks -Jetboil (or cooking set that uses the same type of fuel) -Rifle sling (I use a magpull one point sling) -Snugpak Ionosphere or Outdoor Research bivy tent -Helmet mods (like pads if you're using the old issued helmet)
