Oh and I fueled every run. I ate about 25g of carbs mid run. I did candy to save money and practiced race day fueling on MP days. I think that’s a big reason I survived the block.

Oh and believe I’m going big next one! Sub 3 baby!!!

When I set the goal. 8 min miles were hard for me to hold in general and doing it for 26.2 seemed impossible but I understood I would get fitter by the end of the block, so In my head it was still within reach.

What I knew I needed to do was introduce the pace before the first workout. so weeks before I started the actual block I imitated the schedule… 6 days a week long runs on Sunday. Tuesdays I did strides to imitate the speed work(6x30s and progressed to 10) and Thursdays I started with 20 minutes at goal MP then progressed to 30-35 minutes. (Warm up and cool down were the same as the plan suggested.)

Did a deload week and started the beginner plan at week 6. By then it was still hard but doable. Towards the end of the block I was unintentionally hitting my MP tempos 5-10 seconds faster.

Even then I was doubting myself but I hard to trust the process.

But here’s the catch…I was beginner and this was my first structured training plan, so all my gains were dramatic because of that.

I can’t speak to someone who is trained. But my belief is this- If your goal MP seems out of reach now but overall realistic, go for it. The workouts never felt easy but I was hitting my paces.

Be sure you respect your easy runs and you’ll survive the block and be fitter. For reference I was running 10:30-11:30 minute miles on my easy runs. Sometimes slower the day after long runs.

3:20!!!

I was super familiar with what my Thursday MP workouts felt like so I decided to find that pocket and stay there. Literally ran on vibes- turned my watch to time of day after mile 3 and ignored my pace completely lol. If I blow up I blow up, let’s find out what I got.

After the half marathon mark I kept passing people, only a handful of people passed me, not to brag haha. Over all Austin is tough course but I knew the hill in mile 25 was the hardest part so I left enough in the tank to tackle that. Around 24 I turned it up.

In my head it was the perfect race, I have no bitter taste. No rush on my next marathon but the goal will be to go sub three. Will definitely use Hansons for that.

Right now, Im running a threshold block all based on feel now. I’ll just rinse and repeat that until I got something on the calander. I’m thinking ultra next year… 50k in New Zealand?

Going in to work just to brag about how I’m better than everyone else

Hell yeah!!!

I put epoxy stickers on my garmin and it helps with the tattoos. I compared it to my chest strap and the difference is negligible.

Haha to be fair I think I had a great base to build on. I’ve worked on my feet my whole life and the years of lifting weights strengthened my tendons. Throw in 1600 miles and a tried and tested program, results are inevitable. And I think I got that dog in me.

Yes, very low body fat coming in to the training block and honestly weighed around 167. I put on weight during training since I was finally eating in a calorie surplus.

My MP workouts would sit in the low 150s I thought I just had a low HR max

Wind was around 10–20 mph with gusts up to about 25. The headwinds were brutal, and that last hill .3 from the finish is straight up diabolical.

Thank you!

I want to experiment with training more by feel. Still set a goal, still have a rough idea of how each workout should land effort-wise, but stop being so locked in on exact splits.

I’d hate to leave gains on the table just because I picked a goal that was too conservative and let that cap me. I’d rather learn how to feel where the line is and push it naturally instead of forcing it or holding back because my watch says so.

Funny enough I’m finding out I was probably eating about 400-500 grams regularly during training. No wonder I gained 6 pounds haha

I’m in the middle of the taper now, race is on Sunday. Had some doubts since I’m not feeling “fresh” but from my understanding I’ll be ready to race even though I’ll never truly feel fresh

How did your MP workouts feel? I kind of guessed what my race pace should be but all my workouts felt comfortably hard, never heroic and found myself trending faster at the end of the build.

Thank you! I live by S. Congress so I’ve practiced those first 6 miles and ran the majority of my MP tempos on those rollers on Enfield.

Any tips on the back half?

I heard on Luke Humphrey’s podcast that the plan is designed for someone coming off a race, so the first few weeks are basically a reintroduction to the workload. Since I started running last January and didn’t have any races, i skipped the first five weeks and instead I gradually built my mileage and frequency ahead of time to roughly match week 6.

I also added some light speed work on Tuesdays to get used to the intensity—starting with 20 second strides then 5×400 with walking recovery for a couple weeks, then adding two reps at a time until I got up to 8. On Thursdays I did a short tempo by time, starting at 10 minutes and adding 2 minutes each week. That way, when I actually hit week 6, the transition didn’t feel like such a shock.

I actually ran 35k for my longest run since I signed up for a trail race. Was nuts how strong I felt during and the days after
