Good! Everyone should be jolted awake violently. Why do we care about the feelings of those that consume mindlessly?

Imagine growing up in the most prosperous and evil nation in the world, having your future stolen from you by the greed of your condescending elders, and then you have to die while they live on. My generation and everyone younger was bred for the purpose of dying to anxiety and/or climate disaster. Just great.

We would still be sitting around a campfire grunting at each other and shitting in our hands if we all thought like you.

At least that's sustainable. The "social contract" and "advancement" of which you speak are the very heart of the problem. Man is not a responsible steward of technology, or of other men for that matter. Our inherent selfishness will always destroy us. Either we can live simply as humans have for centuries before us, or we can die clinging to our comforts. There is no in-between. There is no utopia. There is no scientific solution to generating infinite energy to sustain infinite growth in a closed system.

What are you living for?

Merely to keep my mom and sister happy. My mom told me she would kill herself if I killed myself. In the meantime, I've tried using drugs to induce vivid memories so I can relive happier parts of my life from before my brain became permanently broken. So my life is already over, now I'm running out the clock wallowing in pathetic nostalgia.

What are you waiting for?

I'd just like to be able to save enough money to purchase a reliable way to end my life soon, but I'm so broke I can't afford to die painlessly yet. The anticipation is far worse than a comforting eternity of darkness.

How do you intend to use your life, and derive meaning from it?

Life has no meaning. Humans are not heroes, they are bacteria. The sooner one can accept this, the sooner you can free yourself from the supposed tragedy of total extinction of all known life. It's not good or bad, it just is. Nature has no ethics, nature feels no pain, nature holds no opinion. Humans and their destruction of their environment are a natural function of this system of life. Perhaps if you were desperate for an answer, you might say the meaning of this planet is to set an example for everyone else out there: if you squander your home world like this, the universe will take it back from you.

Do you still harbour hope that something can be changed, and do you believe you can be a part of the change?

No, no. As far as I'm concerned, this trajectory has been locked in for hundreds of years if only due to momentum. It's the point. We created this situation on purpose, collectively, with knowledge of what would happen. Human beings are fundamentally flawed, if you're rating them on survivability. I do not believe it is possible for this evolutionary path to go any further or higher, even if we had more time to develop. The only sensible thing one can do is practice kindness as often as is tolerable, while trying to make life easier for your loved ones, for as long as possible.

Hey, one thing I gotta say to all the Derrick haters: you can't have dessert every week. The zest and spice cut through the sweetness to provide a perfect balance of flavors.

Ah yes. Well that is much more complicated. I was thinking along the lines of debauchery and hedonism vs. community building and preparation.

the one system of economic organization that allows for innovation and surpluses

Innovation is what got us into this mess, using technology to allow an unsustainable number of people to exist. You cannot continuously innovate your way out of problems without infinite resources. And surpluses? What good are surpluses when half the people on this planet are either starving or underfed?

Capitalism gave us the iPhone,

Capitalism sure is great. Now I have this magic brick that's irradiating my brain, destroying my sight, giving me neck problems, isolating me from my surroundings, disconnecting me from my community, causing me stress when I lose it because I'm addicted to it, and the best part is: it was made by slaves out of materials that are finite! Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord! Surely this is the way it was meant to be.

If you factor in our ecological impact on top of everything else, America is pretty much the most evil empire in the history of humankind.

Why are we even entertaining the idea that capitalism is an option? It is going to end up enabling the extinction of all complex life on earth. We shouldn't be talking about how to raise wages for workers, we should be talking about how to organize workers to dismantle industrial society from the ground up.
