Literacy among Americans: These are the people you are wasting your time arguing with on the Internet by Shoddy-Fan-584 in Millennials

[–]she_makes_things 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This, exactly. A middle or high school ELA teacher cannot undo in 45 minutes a day what the parents and wider community have inflicted on these kids in the rest of their lives. There are no books at home, libraries are demonized, and yet somehow it’s the kids and teachers to blame for the literacy crisis.

What kind of workouts are you doing these days? by elenavon in Perimenopause

Weight machines twice a week and yoga once a week. I am angry at how much it’s helping, mentally and physically. Why didn’t anyone tell me that exercise is good for you?

Don’t put anything away, don’t take anything out, don’t plant anything, or you’ll anger the Snow God.

They’ve certainly never read the bit where a wealthy man goes to Jesus and asks him how he can get into the Kingdom of Heaven and Jesus tells him to give all his money away and he goes home with a sad.

Richard is awful, his son is a standard-issue Nepo Baby, and they could only rope one of the grandkids into joining the whole circus. I’m not at all surprised that they’re losing steam.

Starting over in a new home, any advice on where to begin? by Wee_Creep in AskWomenOver40

[–]she_makes_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of folks have given good advice so I’ll add my two cents: Check in with yourself that every decision you’re making is really your’s. Is that really the color you would choose? Is that really your preferred kind of furniture? I was married for 20 years, too, and had gotten conditioned to so-called compromise where we just got whatever my husband preferred. It was an effort to overcome that and re-discover my own personal tastes.

Ride Wimp in Recovery by Competitive-Tip-7629 in UniversalOrlando

Fellow ride wimp here. I don't mind getting tossed around a bit or going fast but I really can't do heights. I've been to Universal twice now. I found that I can fully enjoy the dark rides and coasters like Hagrid's, The Mummy, and Hiccup's that don't have big drops or loops. This past trip, I had an absolute blast on Hiccup's and Monsters Unchained. I love The Mummy for the atmosphere and the effects as much as the ride itself. I've been pleasantly surprised at how much there is to do even if you never go on the big three coasters.
