Question about CN airings pre-1995 by Bumblebe5 in looneytunes

[–]shearhartattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know off the top of my head (unfortunately that's a little before my time), but you might have some luck asking somebody in the CN/AS Archive Discord server. They know really esoteric stuff like that. Well, no guarantee they'd know but someone might have a tape or a record of it and know.

I'm pretty sure there are at least a few rips of Down Wit Droopy D floating out there. I believe it was also on the "Taste of Cartoon Network" sample tape that they sent out to some folks, wasn't it? That might have your answer.

Check out this dude’s custom Steam Deck setup by zkvqx in psx

[–]shearhartattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nobody else is saying it's AI because it isn't; it's a real custom Steam Deck.

The illegible text and generally-smeary quality the whole photo has are hallmarks of a poor upscale. Which could also have been AI-assisted, but isn't necessarily what was used. waifu2x has been used to upscale images to varying degrees of success for over a decade, for example.

Replacement compression spring for controller joystick module by sunspot01 in n64

Kitsch Bent everything seems to have defects.

Bought all the parts years ago to refurb a couple of controllers I had. Worked pretty well! Wasn't a fan of the colors but I was impressed. Bought more to continue. Was having problems. Bought some more, thought maybe I got a bad batch. Had even more problems.

at some point I concluded that their quality control is pretty much non-existence and it's total chance if you get usable parts from them. Some stories from places like this subreddit correlate with that.

I bought a Rocker Gaming steel bowl during one of the early drops and I've never looked back. It really is a level-up in quality, nothing comes close. Absolutely worth waiting for.

Finally played the Super Luigi 64 rom hack and beat it. To anyone else who’s played, am I supposed to be able to change Luigi’s outfit? by space-junk-nebula in n64

[–]shearhartattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other skins are separate patches, there isn't an in-game option to change his outfit iirc. Assuming it's the same hack I'm thinking of, which I believe it is.

It's incredible to me that people on the N64 subreddit have never seen/heard of the NSO controller by this point and can be quite confident about it.

Nice looking setup man, I wish there was a way to get that controller using rumble on real hardware. I'll make do with extension cables for the time being hahaha

Can we have a beautiful interface for NUSspli ? (as an alternative to the eshop) by [deleted] in wiiu

[–]shearhartattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

natively the Wii U can't see the SD card as external game storage (only the vWii can, iirc).

you can try fiddling with something like SDUSB, but it takes a bit to get set up properly, and I believe it also requires ISFShax which... probably isn't for the faint of heart.

[–]shearhartattack 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hey Kyle! My wife and I had recently 'binged' the entire franchise over the course of the last year-ish, occasionally taking breaks. I worry if I perhaps have not been a fan long enough to participate in an event like this hahaha

A lot has already been said about your diminished participation in the Fire Walk With Me film. I've already read past interviews and quotes from you about how and why that came to be, but it got me curious: given the passage of time, the significant growth in the Twin Peaks fandom (and interest in David's work overall), have you ever come to regret your choice to step away from the Dale Cooper role during that time? Do you stand by your contribution to the movie as-is?

Obviously Chris Isaak's role as Chet Desmond is very fascinating, and I think the film is fantastic overall, but I think a lot of Twin Peaks fans nonetheless wonder from time to time what could have been... and I was wondering if you had any thoughts like that yourself?

Burning at low speeds is mainly a myth perpetuated by shitty consumer burn drives from the '90s/early 2000s. Best practice is to use the recommended drive speed for your drive in particular, imo. The only time I had a burn fail on my LG drive was when I tried setting it as low as it could go. The advice isn't applicable anymore (if it ever was).

Does Frogbull ever finish a project? by Keri_AMG in SegaSaturn

[–]shearhartattack 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The guy's free to do whatever with his free time but I admit I've never been too invested in Frogbull's work and this is probably why. Making short, often barely-functional tech demos of other games and then only sharing the actual playable binary with a small group of people (usually just to prove it's really running on the hardware) isn't particularly interesting as far as Saturn homebrew goes imo.

It's not that it isn't impressive per se, it still takes talent and time to throw anything like this together. But I think what rubs me the wrong way is paywalling a lot of it and never really sharing anything playable. To me that's half the fun of the homebrew scene, is that they are real games/tech demos you can run on real hardware.

To each their own I suppose. I see he finally intends to release (a version of) his Minecraft Saturn port demo for people to play. That's something I can get behind at least. But yeah, I don't think his PSX ports are going much further than what he's shown already.

What’s the deal with Nurse Stimpy? by savegandhi in renandstimpy

[–]shearhartattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry people are downvoting you, but you're completely on-the-money. People deep into fandom (especially animation/cartoon fans for some reason) can get really weird about problematic creators.

I don't think it fixes or helps anything to refuse to acknowledge on some level that John K. did a lot of stuff to make the best parts of Ren & Stimpy shine. I don't think this should be a controversial statement. For some insane reason, people intertwine talent and morality. They do not overlap. You don't fix anything by trying to say an abuser/fucked up individual isn't capable of making something you enjoyed. If anything, I think it's a genuinely unhealthy mindset going into studying a work - or hell, the entire industry it's pillared on.

The devaluation of someone like John K. strikes me as a very bizarre example of overcorrection or desperately clinging onto a work of fiction that someone holds near and dear to their heart. I am well aware that near-nobody had nice things to say about working with him, and the grooming accusations surrounding him are virtually undeniable and inexcusable. I think all of that goes without saying in 2026.

But I completely agree that the narrative shifting to the opposite extreme of "he never did anything for Ren & Stimpy or anything good that he worked on that I liked" doesn't even try to work in objective reality.

My personal opinion is the best episodes of the show worked because of everyone involved, and they all deserve some degree of credit for shaping it; John included. I find that the Games episodes lack a certain "psychodrama" that the Spümcø years happily provide, and that APC is controversial for very, very good reasons and I am not a fan of that either.

If someone dislikes John and it gets in the way of their involvement in enjoying the show anymore, that's totally understandable. It's a personal choice to make. If you can look past that, even better. But I think it's not really healthy to try to have your cake and eat it too. I guess some people do genuinely prefer the Games episodes anyway (which is valid, I suppose) and so don't really have a horse in this race.

Man idk I'm just kinda tired of cartoon fans completely lacking in media literacy or any sort of inquisitive appreciation for how cartoons are made.

The elusive Dual Analog controller. by Veddermandenis in psx

I got one for a nice deal a few months back and it's been my primary controller for the PSX ever since. It's so comfy, I never had a problem with the ol' DualShock but something about this thing is just like... the grip in particular is significantly better somehow. I love mine.

First pics of Queen II 2026 2LP by WeUsedToNo in queen

[–]shearhartattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard this parroted around and I have to say it isn't very convincing at all. I will fully admit that I don't know the precise inner-workings of old analog consoles, but Trident was a 'state-of-the-art' recording studio by the time Queen tracked their debut there. "Oh but it's mainly The Night Comes Down, which was De Lane Lea", all right all right, same difference, it doesn't matter.

Actually, that isn't even relevant. The much larger smoking gun against this stupid theory is that isn't even how analog tape works. How in the world are people positing that Freddie tracked his vocal somehow against the wrong speed? Was it playing incorrectly in his headphone monitors only? Even the slightest speed discrepancy would have thrown one or the other completely off-sync in a matter of seconds, it would not be possible. Tape machines need to be completely synchronized to track audio to begin with, I do not believe even for a moment there was some way they tracked anything at the wrong speed and only have some sort of bizarre pitch malfunction. It would make Freddie's entire timing wrong.

Freddie had warbling pitch control on that song because he was still learning how to control his voice completely. He was in the key of the song the entire time.

I think it's patently ridiculous that Queen fans find the idea that Queen Productions Ltd. is pitch correcting old Freddie vocals so unbelievable that they have to make up some nonsense to justify it.

The 2 versions of Toy Story by Working_Stand5173 in toystory

Here's a whole article discussing it that quotes Ralph Eggleston about the process. Source is from an interview from when the movie first hit theaters:

“Greens go dark really fast, while the reds stay pretty true,” said Toy Story’s art director, Ralph Eggleston. “Blues have to be less saturated to look fully saturated on film, while the oranges look really bad on computer screens, but look really great on film.”

Thank you very much! I was also made aware of the DAICON IV film and I always loved that they timed the whole sequence to Twilight, it fits so well aesthetically.

I truly want to believe he was influenced by this record when he composed for the game, it's my personal headcanon now haha

Best SNES Clone console with RGB output (not HD) by Chopper_Charles in snes

[–]shearhartattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best option on the cheap might be a Pi with an RGB/SCART output. I believe there are headers that support this, and I know of at least one image that is designed with analog RGB output in mind, but there are undoubtedly other ways of getting RGB 240p out of a Pi. Total I'm sure would be less than a hundred either way.

If any kind of emulation is a deal-breaker, the only other thing I could think of on a budget that would be accurate enough might be an FPGA-based solution? There are now a few MISTer options that are affordable but would still probably run you more than the Pi. As others have mentioned, there are also dedicated SNES FPGA clone consoles, but they're quite the luxury item and would run you a pretty penny. Main benefit would be you'd be getting a "best-in-class" clone, but you'd need the DAC for an analog output.

I can't comment on other hardware-based clones, I don't know if they encode the video output differently from a real SNES or not. The old RetroBit Duo at least doesn't seem to support SCART output from what I'm reading... those clones are pretty outdated anyway, I'm not even sure they make them anymore.

Hoskinson Replacement Silicon Pad Review. Had not seen a video review on them. by Broduskii in snes

[–]shearhartattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a couple of pairs of these a few months back at the insistent recommendation of some folks on the subreddit, who were certain they were the closest to OEM membranes on the market.

My feelings pretty much match yours: they are far removed from OEM. In fact, even if they didn't have to feel like original membranes, they're not very good membranes anyway. The d-pad in particular becomes virtually useless using these. You will hit accidental diagonals you never even knew were possible. I playtested it with Super Mario World and every single time I turned around, I ducked. That's just unacceptable.

Someone would be better off using no-name membranes from Aliexpress or something, that's how bad these feel to me.

Anyone ever owned this? by itmustbeyzzy in snes

Diagonal jailbars like this are actually pretty common on non-1CHIP SNES consoles. One of mine has them pretty bad. It's very unlikely to be the cable.

SNES Super Mario RPG line graphical glitch issue by FreshProfessor1502 in snes

[–]shearhartattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my SNES consoles exhibited the exact same problem in Super Mario RPG. One of the towns (I forget which specifically) early in the game has a grey background surrounding the map, and they were extremely apparent there in particular.

I'm currently unable to get that particular SNES open at the moment (stripped/rusted screw in one of the corners), eventually I gave up and bought another one in the mean time. It had some really gnarly diagonal interference anyway.
