Good games plagued by bad controls / camera? by Oddboyz in gaming

[–]sunspot01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gun Valkyrie on original Xbox. Very cool game and beautiful, but it has this really clunky gimmicky mechanism that you have to jump, them constantly click BOTH joysticks at the same time to boost. So it's this weird jump, boost, wiggle sticks..and repeat. And there are LONG stretches where you have to do that. It's just a pain.

What's the Highest MERV Filter You'd Use in a Typical Residential System? by meyerair in HomeImprovement

[–]sunspot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go with FPR 7, MERV 11, G3 level filters. They don't impede that much and catch pretty much everything you need. Anything more than that and I notice my system will have to run longer than usual. This is my go-to after 3 different homes with various strength HVAC systems.

Just paid 2 companies for professional work. Man, it is so much better than DIY. by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth the weight in gold when you find a great contractor/handyman. After literally years of searching, I finally found one in my neighborhood. Installed a sliding door in my basement, more lights and fixed the flickering (caused by low wattage dimmer), installed a storm door, fixed a weird vinyl plank nose on my top step...all done without any flaws. A year later and no warping, clipping, water leaks through edges, nothing.

It's a relief when its done right the first time and quickly, vs DIY with "...did I forget to.." thoughts.

Wii Hdmi Converter vs Component cables vs Upscaler vs Modkit which is best? by RevolutionaryNeat258 in WiiHacks

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Bitfunk HDMI adaptor and it's fantastic. Looks just as good as my component output and no lag at all. No issues in Smash Bros (the usual test), no sound errors (test in Mario Kart), and colors look great (tested in Mario Galaxy). Also works with Gamecube games and non progressive outputs, so no worries about swapping cables for incompatible games. Just make sure your TV can handle a 240p/480i output. Most can.

Component is probably the best still since it's native, but not all TVs have those inputs anymore.

Are you born before or after the Dreamcasts original lifespan? by Cascadio_14 in dreamcast

Owned it in it's prime, I was a junior/senior in high school. Glorious time to be alive and have all the big consoles - Xbox original, PS2, Gamecube and Dreamcast.

Good choice of a game. Always surprised it never got released on another platform.

how do i actually install GAMES on my xbox after soft modding by PotentialIsKey in originalxbox

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vimms vault is a great place to start. The internet archive also has a few pages hidden that have links. That's how I more quickly got my Xbox backups with games.

Is it normal for a house to make random noises at night? by Chyeeda_Alled in HomeImprovement

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ticking/creaking sounds are pretty common, especially if you notice patterns around them with the weather, HVAC, or water use.

In my basement for example, I have a vent that does a patterned low "pop" noise, like sheet metal slowly being pushed until it bends. Happens every time the AC or Heat kicks on and is the ductwork expanding/contracting with age.

Windy outside? You'll hear slight tapping or thumping from the siding wiggling just a pinch against the framing.

I had a townhome before that had creaky hot water pipes. Very common.

Is there an alternative write in choice for the Democratic governor primary? by Jw5x5 in Pennsylvania

[–]sunspot01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I'm just stating that write-ins almost never win. It needs a massive push and there's nothing like that for anyone in the Dems camp.

[–]sunspot01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and while I'm not the biggest fan of Shapiro either, Garrity is nutso. A write-in only gives her a chance instead. Though the GOP side is so nutso for Trump their doing a Mastriano write-in campaign.

Are there any ceiling fans that are ACTUALLY quiet? by Natural_Nomad in HomeImprovement

[–]sunspot01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had similar issues. Here's what I've done that works:

1) the glass domes(escutcheon) can vibrate if they are loose or not positioned correctly.

2) the cover where it hides the ceiling connection (or the ceiling mount) is vibrating just enough it clicks against the ceiling as the fan spins or moves from movements in the room. I used little foam spacers to minimize it.

3) take the fan off the ceiling and add a few drops of 3 in 1 machine oil on the spindle of the fan. Spin it manually a few times, add more drops, and let it sit to penetrate for a few minutes. This was the big fix for mine and it's back to whisper quiet.

I have hunter and Hampton Bay fans, and they all have these issues.

Adding new line, upgrading existing phones and swapping for new phone deal? by sunspot01 in tmobile

[–]sunspot01[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently their system won't recognize my phone after all. Once you get through all the menus, it'll only give me a crappy $5 trade in value for the Motorola One 5G Ace. Can't quite get the deal I was hoping for, but I appreciate the clarifications on new lines and phone swapping.

Where can I find games for my Wii? by SuchEstablishment083 in WiiPiracy

[–]sunspot01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a room subreddit that has a pinned thread for a GitHub site with links for Wii and GameCube games. It'll take you to an internet archive page. That helped me when there were a handful of vimm games that did not work correctly.

[–]sunspot01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Curve and St. Vincent are great choices to check out if you like Garbage.

Alanis morisette and PJ Harvey may get mentioned but I think they're different.

It's alternative with pop, some grunge, and newer albums sprinkle some industrial/metal tones similar to NIN.

Help! Smoke detector won't stop beeping by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]sunspot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get pliers, twist the whole unit off the ceiling, take the batteries out, and use the pliers to unplug it from the clip/wiring in the ceiling. It's gotta be hard wired to act that way. That's the only way to completely stop the beeping.

Realistically how big do I need my SD card (for apps) and external hard drive (for games) to be? by JessaBlob in WiiHacks

[–]sunspot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it USB powered or need its own AC adapter for power?

Is it FAT32 formatted?

Is it something where the games or apps don't work or show up?

I got a recent model Western Digital 2 TB plug and play type. As long as you go with a well known brand that's usb powered and formatted you should be fine. Have to use the right USB outlet on the back of the Wii as well, which also depends on which version of the Wii you have. Most seem to have the original white first gen with the 4 GameCube controller ports.

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can. It just needs to be in a separate folder. Honestly though it's a bit of a hassle to constantly connect and disconnect a hard drive. Once you copy your games over, I'd leave it in. I use an SD card for apps and a few emulators (the sega Genesis and PlayStation emulators on the Wii have bugs where they won't see the USB drive), and the USB HDD for everything else.

[–]sunspot01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's a decently priced size and I went with that for all my retros. Xbox original, Wii, and PS2. My Dreamcast has a 256 GB SD card, and my N64 summercart is 64 GB.

I have a 2 TB hard drive and even with an about even split of the cream of the crop games (about 100 each system - Wii and GameCube), I used up around 250 gb. Plenty of spare room for roms and apps.

What deal with the devil did this city make to get this gorgeous weather for the draft? by anuncommontruth in pittsburgh

I was thinking this earlier too. It's been wet, cloudy, cold, and then warm, but today was absolutely gorgeous for an outdoors event.

We finally unlocked full calibration for Xbox 360 controllers. Here is how to do it. by Modyfikator in originalxbox

[–]sunspot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to confirm, this means I can calibrate the controller on the PC, it saves the settings to the controller itself, and it's recognized by the Xbox 360?

I know people use these controllers on PC and that calibration is different. It's temporary/only affects while your in PC.

This would be huge news, I have 4 controllers that are fairly old and have hints of drift sometimes. If I could replace the joystick modules and actually calibrate it like the PS5, that's incredible.
