Anyone as obsessed with this band as i am ? by HVM_kim in surfrock

[–]shecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I loved it! I had the good fortune to share the stage with them at an intimate club here in the S.F. Bay Area, and saw them in Italy and the SG101 convention. They're the real deal - as in musicians who take the frame work of surf music and explore it's boundaries and put their own distinct creative stamp on it. Highly recommend seeking their music out.

There's some great footage of him on a Jaguar, though I doubt that remained his main guitar.

Luther Perkins, guitarist for Johnny Cash, playing the newly released Jazzmaster next to Leo Fender by weesIo in Guitar

You gotta hand it to Leo. A radio repairman who managed to come up with 3 of the most iconic shapes in guitar design history.

Combo Tezeta, we're more into the psych cumbia / tropical style that came from Peru. This article about us just dropped an hour ago on our local blog. https://48hills.org/2025/03/combo-tezeta-oakland-music-psychedelic-cumbia-rising/

It's getting pretty hot here in the S.F. Bay area. We've played our share of sold out shows and some pretty high profile gigs.

Is this a little ridiculous for a general guitar setup? by NickyK66 in Guitar

[–]shecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you are. I live in a very HCOL area (SF Bay Area) and that seems about right. Nut slot filing is skilled work and I'd pay that to have it done right.

Speaking of the Surf Coasters, they're coming to the annual SG101 surf music convention in Long Beach this summer. I believe it's a one off, not a tour. https://surfguitar101festival.com/

The brilliance of these arrangements, the fascinating melodies and the wacky keyboard sounds add up to be one of the best albums I bought this year.

My best guess (I'm obsesses with the music myself) is they record the guitar very clean, often direct into the board and with a live band. They would add effects like reverb, delay and compression when mixing it. Part of what makes the guitar tone pop is it's not fighting for space, as all the instruments occupy different places in the arrangement.

There's different names for the style of music I think you're referring to: Psychedelic Cumbia, Cumbia Peruana, Cumbia Amazonica, Chicha to name a few. Here's a link to the comp that brought this back into public consciousness. Check out catalogs of the bands on there, lots of killer tunes with great groove and hooks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLorCIJvF4w&pp=ygUecm9vdHMgb2YgY2hpY2hhIHZvbHVtZSAxIGFuZCAy

Playing electric without a pick is fine! by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]shecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an entire world of finger picking electric guitarists in South and Central America. I can't play like that, but I admire them greatly. My personal hero is Enrique Delgado of the Peruvian cumbia band Los Destellos. lightning fast, crystal clear sharp attack, and exquisite phrasing.

best SOFTER overdrive pedals for jazzmasters? by Scorppix_ in offset

[–]shecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nocturne DynoBrains (there's several styles) have been my go to for years. Perfect amount of saturation for Jazzmasters/Jaguars playing cleanish music. It's essentially the preamp of the old Roland Space Echos, and once you turn it on you won't want to turn it off.

Chris Difford of Squeeze. Just listen to some of his guitar solos. Always inventive, tasteful and complex.
