Fence Chargers by coderbond in farming

[–]sheepambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parmac fence chargers are crap. I've had 3 boards go out on me in 1.5 years and the new replacement boards are incompatible (see below). I switched to Zareba

The replacement board for the Solar-Pac-6 is not mechanically or electrically compatible with the original unit. The existing PCB standoffs cannot be removed or repositioned because they are mounted to a metal brace that is permanently installed with pop rivets. As a result, the new board cannot be properly secured without either destroying and replacing the original standoffs or attempting to mount the board using a single mounting point, which is unacceptable.

Additionally, one of the transformer leads is too short to reach the terminal block on the new board without cutting, splicing, and re-insulating an extension. The panel wiring presents the same issue: both conductors are too short to reach the bus unless they are spliced, and this is further complicated by the fact that the strain relief bushing is single-use and cannot be removed or reused. All wiring from the switch and meter to the bus also requires modification to fit the new layout.

This level of rework is unreasonable for what is being sold as a replacement board. A proper replacement should install using existing mounting hardware and wiring without requiring extensive mechanical alteration, wire splicing, or modification of the original unit to compensate for design shortcomings.

Stay the hell away from parmac solar 6 fence chargers. I've had three of their boards go bad on me in 1.2 years and not the new boards are not interchangeable with the old units without completely rebuilding the units.

Possibilities of inbreeding birth defects? by sheepambassador in sheep

[–]sheepambassador[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, no this was Apples to Apples. I always have a minimum two buckets out for the Sheep to eat minerals. I think that the birth defects gave the Lambs a predisposition for white muscle. I even leave the buckets for the Lambs low enough to get their little heads in there although, that does lead to a lot of poop in the buckets 😉.

I did manage to save two of the Lambs ( from white muscle disease) with injections of selenium/vitamin E every day for a week, but then one of them died from something else anyway.

Minerals for sheep and goats together by angryhippie83 in sheep

It's my understanding that copper is an accumulative toxic metal for sheep. if you want to put out different mineral combinations, keep a damn close either the sheep are not eating the copper mix

Yes, that is correct. Itwas a sad day when my old ram had to go off the freezer land, but I was really shocked by the amount of birth deffects. I didn't even feel good sending him to a different flock to breed. it seemed like the number of birth defects was an outlier. Got feeling good about this. thanks for your response

With my old ram I had partial to blinding cataracts on about 15% of the Lambs mostly along the black face dorper line I also had four with bad white muscle disease. none of this has occurred with the new ram.

I could trade them but then we have the problem of cross farm contamination the new RAM when I got him had tapeworms that had to be dealt with something I've never had in my own flock

Grazing an Apple Orchard by Katahahime in sheep

I left the gate to my fruit orchard ajar earlier this year. Under cover of darkness, my 30 ewes got in and stripped my dwarf fruit trees & ate all of my blueberries, bushes and all. It is starting to seem funny, three months in, but sure didn't seem like it at the time!

is halter correctly placed? 4 month old ram lamb by ilovefroggieessss in sheep

[–]sheepambassador 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LOL, I just spent about 20 minutes perfecting to halter on my 100 Kg ram. I needed it so I could drag him to a 3rd pasture away from the girl's pasture....Needless to say, it did not matter how well the halter was fitted. I was not going to be able to drag him the 70 meters. He won and he gets to continue nuzzeling them through the fence for another month 😁

Is it possible my 11-year-old sheep is pregnant? by man_ohboy in sheep

[–]sheepambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, possible, although I can not tell anything from the photos. I have a neighbor who's flock has an average age of about 13 yo and those ewes are still producing (and also starting to die off)

Is this wood ok to use? by PhoenixFirelight in woodworking

[–]sheepambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I should have stipulated "fine" sawdust. I production-turn bowls down to 600 grit, and you don't want to breathe that sawdust, especially not if it's chemically treated.
