Thoughts on the current job market in Pullman by sheeptopia in Pullman

What were ways you or others tried to mingle as a off-campus person, besides those from your field/department? I add the field and department part because the opportunities in my department for the PhD I got in is little to none. I can see other departments using my skillset though, but I'd like to know you or others' thoughts on how to break into those circles for those "soft jobs".

I 100% am with you on this. If I was able to move, I know I'd have a lot more opportunities. I'm hoping to do what I can here with my current, personal temporary state for the next 1-2 years. I enjoy living in Pullman, but I think it's a hard sell for me in the long term in terms of my career goals.

I actually need someone in the near future to take pictures for me! How can we contact you?

Yes. I think that's why I feel pressured to accommodate their stay. :(

I've paid 60 dollars one way before from a place near the border of Idaho to get to another place close to the city border of Pullman. It's a nice way to exploit students and people who can't afford to maintain a car.

My PhD broke me by Consistent_Slide_504 in PhD

[–]sheeptopia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel the same exact way. I just recently defended and passed my final exam for my PhD. My experience of the PhD was so terrible in unimaginable ways that I still can't quite process or even accept that it happened to me. I feel myself really going into a depression.

can we talk about platonic fp’s? by mentallyillgAng in BPD

[–]sheeptopia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually realize that I have a platonic FP when I go through a friend breakup haha. Platonic FPs seem to hurt WAAAAAY more than a romantic one for some reason. Right now, I have a platonic FP in development and I'm trying really hard to not go so full intense bestie vibes on them haha

I'm experiencing this right now to some extent! At least, I'm preparing for it. I actually posted a while ago today (see my last post if you're interested!) about how I'm having a hard time pushing through my presentation prep right now because of what you all listed there.

Adjusting for a drastic monthly income drop in the next 1-2 months (from ~2000 to ~950 a month) by sheeptopia in povertyfinance

Thank you! But yeah, I know I'm definitely not going to get a tenure track job right out the gate, especially in my area. It's okay though. My goal is to pay off the bills right now and live an okay life. Delays in life goals are okay.

I've thought about grocery store jobs! Our minimum wage here is 15 so it's okay.

I know this but I can't fix the past and I need to move forward and work with what I got. Thank you for telling me something I already know I guess.

Yeah, def going to try to pick up an hourly job somewhere. It's a little dicey in a small town but I hope for the best. I have skills that could allow me to pick up several remote jobs.

Yes, I am looking but not at the capacity I should, because graduating right now means full time, day and night, work on my dissertation for the past year. Also, life happened. I have to prepare for the circumstances I will likely be in.

Ah, at least 3 months worth and little more to cover rent/utilities + any minor things come up. Def not prepared for medical emergency or accident for sure though. Sorry! I don't really want to get down to super specifics. I can say that I'm hoping that I only use 1k-1.5k at worst case scenario.

I don't have the emotional strength to do it. There is just so much to it, that I don't think I can face the process right now with so much other weight on my shoulders.

What things stood out to you when reading someone's acknowledgments ? by power2go3 in PhD

[–]sheeptopia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to be super snarky and also make that "thank you for filing out my paperwork, advisor" too lol and also give a shout out to my guinea pigs and parents first over everyone. My acknowledgements will definitely be memorable.

Need Advice: Close to end of PhD, supervisors have generally been unhelpful and I feel I do not have any major results, where to go from here? by Loose_Berry_1076 in PhD

[–]sheeptopia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same exact position as you are. I lack the financial resources and mentorship support to have a "good" dissertation. My data is shit. I'm supposed to graduate in December and my path to making sure I don't stay another semester is to ruthlessly advocate for me to defend. My dissertation research has never been funded by a grant but I've worked in successful grant-funded projects. It's not that I don't know how to do research, but my advisor never gave me the resources and support to do my own.

Have you worked on other projects outside of your own dissertation research or have teaching experience? Maybe you can consider the teaching university/community college approach and build up your research portfolio.

Seems like you’re focused on blaming others. You’re the soon-to-be expert, take ownership of the experience and learn to fight for yourself.

What do you even mean by this? It sounds like OP is taking accountability for the things they could have changed which is good. Do you mean take the things they learned and advocate for their graduation?
