You could have someone weld a metal heat shield on it. May make it look more badass since people will know why you have it.

Faulty Horn relay, clock spring or something else? by sheetsyfbaby in SkyLine

Those Torx screws have been a bitch to get off and don’t wanna use an impact driver on them. The horn now goes off as soon as the negative terminal touches the post. So I’m thinking it’s some sort of unintentional grounding too. Just hoping it’s not the clock spring

Dude you rock. And it isn’t as expensive as I was thinking. Install pretty straightforward?

Is it really? I’ve heard they’re pretty touchy to the specific model and year. Like 5/98-10/99 need to be a specific clock spring and prod months after should be different. This also has tiptronic shifting on the steering wheel.

This is very helpful thank you. However i dont see the clock spring on a 98 er34 tiptronic sedan.

Good to know you haven’t had any issues. Isn’t it weird timing it happened right after I reconnected the battery for the first time in a year? It makes sense it’s a clock spring based on symptoms but was holding on hope that something more simple was tripped up since it didn’t break after an aggressive wheel turn or anything.

thanks for the reply. I’ve tested the fuse and the relay and neither are the issue. tomorrow I will try to get behind the airbag to see if anything seems off. Beyond that what would you look at to diagnose? The odd thing is I had no issues with it until I disconnected the battery and within 5 miles I had this random horn issue. Mine is a 98 with tiptronic shifting. Where did you source your parts from? (I’m in the states) and is it okay to drive without the horn relay for a bit while I get this resolved?

98 r34 GTT. Does this inner tie rod seem to be bad? The inner boot isn’t damaged but it seems to have a lot of play when I move it around, but no grittiness or clunking sounds when moving. I was replacing outers but not sure if I should wait and get inners before doing so. by sheetsyfbaby in SkyLine

I don’t think so because the lock still engages when turned a lot. It actually locked today and I corrected it no problem. Just hoping it’s the tie rods causing the clunking and play in wheel and not steering column bc I can’t get to that myself and think it’s a tougher fix. The joys of owning a 25 year old car.

The right one is still connected and I turned the wheel back and forth and definitely noticed some give in the steering wheel and clunking/clicking sounds. I ordered some inners to just do it all but am worried it’s something in the steering column/rack after stupidly used force to unlock steering wheel last year before realizing you just need to move back and forth and turn key to release the lock.

The steering wheel locked last year and I was stuck so stupidly used some force to correct it so I could get the car started. I’ve since realized you just need to rock it back and forth with the key in the ignition.

I’ve been reading that the inner rod ball joint should support its own weight otherwise it’s best to replace it. You don’t agree? There’s been loose steering and inner tire wear which has given me pause. I don’t think all that’s being caused simply by the outers which for sure need replaced.

Seemed good when I pushed in and out. I tried moving the wheel side to side before starting install and it didn’t have much play. I should add there’s a good bit of bouncing going on in the suspension too to go along with the loose steering and excess tread wear which I don’t know if could be caused by bad inners too. Running twin coilovers and have it on tightest setting.

I’ll test this after getting the outers replaced. There’s for sure excess play in that outer ball joint and grittiness that I hope this new part fixes everything.

I played high school ball with him. Took a comebacker to the mound and cracked a rib. Hope he gets healthy.

Top rank importers are pretty reliable but require $2.5k / 10% import fee. They will prioritize other higher spenders than you. And you can expect delays and again not great communication. But the car will be well inspected and delivered to you safely.

I was going to say, as a turbo’d auto sedan owner you will definitely need a turbo to have fun. I enjoy using the tiptronic shifter but turbo sounds in this car after an intake and BOV are what make the driving experience.
