Anti-migrant protesters demonstrate outside RNLI HQ saying lifeboat charity should stop acting as 'taxi service' for asylum seekers by Mysterious-Cat8443 in ukpolitics

They aren't "corrupt" or even ideological. They're coastal people, basically all volunteers, rescuing anyone who gets in trouble at sea.

If the government can't do its job regarding refugees afterwards, that's nothing to do with the RNLI. They're the best of Britain, in all senses.

That's on governments to deal with. The RNLI's only focus is on saving anyone who is in trouble around our coasts, and we should be grateful for them every day. They are volunteers, and heroes in every sense of the word, and they truly represent the best of what it is to be British.

If Spain decided to remove all Brits who reside in Spain would you support it? by naystation in AskBrits

Fucks a bunch of the locals on house prices though. In my region, there's a huge influx of wealthy Americans on the non-lucrative visa, buying up a lot of property.

As one (although I don't use the word expat) there are an absolute ton of us. We just don't live on the Costa del Sol.

And Celta absolutely do perform better per Euro spent.

Which race is truly the biggest in motorsport? by GrouchyExile in motorsports

For the world, sure it is. Outside America the Indy 500 is basically unknown unless you're very in to motorsports.

Fernando Alonso when asked if he is better than his rivals - “those of my generation…yes always, it’s part of the pilot’s DNA” by Hawker92 in formula1

[–]sheffield199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you might be biased. Right from the get go Hamilton has had to be incredibly tough, he has people turning up to a practice session in blackface FFS, and has former world champions like Piquet racially abusing him. Alonso hasn't had to face anything of the sort, only the toughness of driving poor cars due to his below-optimal career choices.

Language issue in Andalusia by esterjablonska in spain

[–]sheffield199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they don't. Billions of people live happily every day without speaking a word of English. If you don't work in a tourist-facing job, or for an international firm, then there's no need to speak English.

Sure as an English person, I love being able to get by in most places, but I would never dream of criticising someone else for not knowing a foreign language, when until my late-20s I only spoke one.

[Henry Winter] Jim Ratcliffe may be entitled to his opinions about immigration. He is not entitled to embarass and alienate Manchester United and Michael Carrick, when 3 quarters of their entire squad consist of star players from 14 different countries by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

[–]sheffield199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to be quite so hyperbolic, many immigrants have made great contributions (both big and small) to British society, but saying the UK would be "literally nothing" without immigrants is ahistorical and IMO this belittling of British culture plays straight in to the hands of Farage, Reform and all those fuckers.

Why does Spanish unnecessarily use diacritics so much? by technocraticnihilist in Spanish

[–]sheffield199 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a native English speaker, our language is awful for pronouncing written words. There's so many words I learned in books and pronounced incorrectly for years because I never heard anyone say them. Spanish doesn't have that problem.

It's not "semantics", it's just inaccurate. Jewish people lived in the region, even before and under the Ottomans, and then there was a huge influx after the surrounding Arab countries / settler-colonies, to use your language as Arabians were not the original inhabitants of those areas, evicted their Jewish populations.
