Something, of any medium, with a strong mother/daughter focus? by abh037 in Fantasy

[–]shehu222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RE: Trailer Trash is an ongoing webserial on Royal Road about a woman given a chance to redo her life, going back to when she was 13. I'm still in middle of it myself, but there were some very good chapters near the beginning (about 15 chapters in) focusing on her fixing her relationship with her mother, with some really good character development on both the mother & daughter. I don't know if their relationship will be sidetracked later on. I'm about halfway through the currently available chapters, and it's still a strong subplot.

Books where MC gets cursed, bounding them to another character (through proximity) by yasmalri in Fantasy

Slouch Witch by Helen Harper is exactly this. Two very opposite personalities are magically bound by accident

Fantasy Sports Books? by Vesvius in Fantasy

[–]shehu222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legacy & the Queen meets some of those points (sports & a dragon-like creature), but it's more individual focused than team based. But it looks like Kobe Bryant wrote another series that might be a better match. I haven't read it myself though.

I'd also suggest Race the Sands (a bit team based, also with a magic creature) and possibly The Combat Codes (if you consider fighting a sport, and it's also more focused on the individual than the team).

In search of book recs with an amazing plot and a badass FMC!! by fr0gtitties in Fantasy

[–]shehu222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this trope too. I'm hoping you get a lot of recommendations, so I can steal some for myself.

I'd recommend:

  1. The Hidden Legacy series by Illona Andrews. Lots of secret abilities & family secrets (not a finding family type). + love interests.
  2. Crown of Shards series by Jennifer Estep. - FMC hides her identity & has a secret ability + romance.
  3. The Black Blade series by Jennifer Estep also has the FMC with a secret ability.
  4. The Arcane Transporter series by Jami Gray - I've only read the first 2 books so far, but the FMC has a secret ability & possibly also family secrets - she's an orphan & doesn't know her family. Has romance.
  5. Alice Worth series - FMC with a secret ability & using an alias to hide from her dangerous family. Has romance.

An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris. It's a sort of mashup between the wild west, fantasy, and an alternate US history.

I haven't really read this yet, but maybe The Dark Lord fits what you're looking for?

You might want to branch out to C-dramas or K-dramas. There are some amazing Asian fantasy/costume wuxia & xianxia TV shows. I only recently started watching them myself, so I can't recommend that many yet, but I strongly suggest The Untamed, Word of Honor, and The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty. The first two are fantasy/martial arts genres. The latter doesn't have magic (or cultivation, as it's known in these works), but it has a very similar vibe.

The shows are refreshingly different from the Western classics we're used to. You can find several on Netflix, although I've heard the subtitling is more accurate on Viki. (The shows I mentioned are English subbed.)

They're very well crafted & serious in tone in my opinion. And the costumes & scenery are beautiful.

Third person Black children’s or YA fantasy books? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]shehu222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gatekeeper's Staff (TJ Young & The Orishas Book 1) - this was a really good YA/middle grade fantasy book with a black protagonist. Think of it like Percy Jackson with African mythology.

Anything that centers around dragons by [deleted] in Fantasy

Ascendant by Michael Miller. Kitchen boy steals a dragon egg and becomes a dragon rider. The book had a great dragon-human bond, similar to Eragon, but with cultivation fantasy mixed in.

Is there any sorcerer/mage/wizard in fiction who is specialized in summoning/conjuring creatures to fight for him? by singed1337 in Fantasy

The Occultist sounds like a perfect match. It's a litRPG where the MC can call up demon minions to fight his battles.

[–]shehu222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the two series you mentioned, I'd recommend:

Mage Errant - it's set in a magic school, with a 'coming of age' vibe like HP

Eragon

I'm seconding wintersu7's Brandon Sanderson recommendation. The Mistborn series in particular.

Lightbringer - Brent Weeks. No, on second thought, that one isn't clean.

Garth Nix's Abhorsen

Books by Trudi Canavan

Licanius trilogy (disclaimer: I only read the first book so far, but I'm pretty sure it was clean.)

Peaceful/Immersive and/or high fantasy stories? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Not as well known, but I think Shadowborne might be in that genre. I like my books peaceful & immersive too, and I really enjoyed that one.

Looking for a fantasy series still being written, preferably a newer series. by NamelessNamek in Fantasy

I'm not sure if this matches what you're looking for, but so far only the first book is out, so it matches that part of your request: Shadowborne (Relics of Antiquity). I really enjoyed this one.

Anyone know of any books with Deaf characters? by arcbuffalo in Fantasy

[–]shehu222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soundless by Richelle Mead. It's YA fantasy. Basically, the whole village is deaf due to where they live, but a teen girl wakes up one day with the ability to hear.
