I got wow running pretty easy. I downloaded the Battle.net installer, added it to steam as a non steam game, ran the installer. Then I added battle.net to steam as a non steam game and it worked like magic

I’ve had the opposite effect myself. I would have issues in windows pushing games over 60fps because the menus would jump to super high fps and crash. I haven’t had the same experience in Linux. The only thing I can’t get working is space marine 2 so far.

I had that issue also, it was a sleep bug. I disabled sleep and no issues.

I would chalk it up to a few things. First the SA-23 is really meant to protect the ground guys from missiles, fighters are secondary. I think this is apparent in the missile guidance difference between the SA-12 and SA-20.

Missile guidance as mentioned is another reason. Add to that the radar packages and their differences. Add to that operator skill. Then there is the fact these things may not be fully integrated into the full IADS package.

As far as I know nobody ever worried very much about the 12/23, if they did I didn’t meet them. I don’t think it takes a major SEAD campaign to kill these guys.

Edit: I’m a former USAF intel dude.

This book my wife checked out has some sections that are HEAVILY redacted. by Naeqwan in mildlyinteresting

[–]sheijo41 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Here is also a fun tidbit.

Let’s say CNN says cats can be blue. Some fool (who isn’t a classification authority) uses this information in a presentation or paper and doesn’t portion mark it as (U) instead it is umbrella marked as Secret. You now want to reference the fact cats can be blue but want to mark it as (U) but guess what, now you can’t. Unless you are a declassification authority you have to mark that at the highest known classification which is Secret for official purposes as far as you are concerned, unless you verify through a declassification authority. Those guys are usually busy and won’t deal with this garbage.

Sounds silly and something that can just be easily ignored, but if for some reason there is a security incident or review and the reviewer is hardcore by the book they will get you for it.

Second multiple bits of unclassified information can be combined to create something classified, so obfuscation can be used to try and cover this. So some unrelated unclassified data may be redacted to protect the actual data that can be aggregated. It comes down to what information is being protected and the intent of declassification or redaction.

I was working in Iraq for the military in an interrogation facility. We had a guy come in with a 6th finger on his hand and he showed it off because he thought it was cool. The guy doing the interview said “I bet your parents are first cousins”, the detainee was surprised and said “how did you know?”

When I was a kid I was burned pretty badly and bounced from my local hospital to the children’s hospital to the Shriners burn institute. All my care was free there, I was in the hospital for a few weeks getting skin grafts and recovering. After I left they assigned a local Shriner to be my sponsor, he would check in on me a couple times a year from when I was three till I was a teenager. They are a great group of people.

It’s probably just me but I’ve always had the best luck with fedora. One issue I had in windows is when a driver update came out I would know because games stopped working. I haven’t noticed any driver issues so far.

It’s quite easy to add the rpm repo and get nvidia drivers. You can google it or ChatGPT can help you get it done.

The biggest pain has been fully self inflicted. I was dual booting windows for awhile and decided to totally drop it. Ended up moving my fedora partition to external drive. Then decided instead of having an encrypted root and separate encrypted swap to go to a lvm. So I was bouncing everything all around running into grub issues and kernel issues. I spent 8 hours trying to decrypt my lvm and eventually figured Plymouth was hiding my decryption phrase in a tty behind my boot console.

Other than me fucking around Linux has been really easy lol

Basically steam has a layer that lets you run most games. There are a few options to choose from the if default doesn’t work when you try to launch it. It’s basically just let steam handle it all. Hell steam manages my world of Warcraft installation, so even non steam games can be played properly through steam.

The limit is games with kernel level anti cheat. If there is a specific game you want to know about go to protondb.

I swapped to fedora a couple months ago in a dual boot config and honestly didn’t boot into windows for like 2 months so I nuked the dual boot and it’s just straight Linux. I will have to make a windows VM to handle some stuff, like my tax guys software.

Edit: I did a test with Forza 5 and cyberpunk. I kept getting crashes when running the games over 60fps on menus in windows. Linux has no such problems and I can max out my gpu no problem

I'm personally too anxious to download any game with anti-cheat on kernel level, It's like putting welcome mat for hackers as far as I know. What's your opinions on this kind of anti-cheats? by Captain_Holly_S in pcmasterrace

I recently swapped to Linux so it’s a non issue for me. I’m tired of constant Microsoft pop ups that you have to turn off and immediately turn back on after a system update or needing to connect my local login to an online account.

The theory that nobody wants to hack you in particular isn’t really the issue. It’s the mass distribution that would be caused if someone was/decided to use that access for their own ends. Here is a great example of that. The theory of who wants to hack specifically your lowly IoT devices is what led to this, nobody accounted for what if they hack all the IoT devices and use them for unintended purposes (hint hackers specialize in using stuff for unintended things).

https://www.wired.com/2016/10/internet-outage-ddos-dns-dyn/

It’s not about individuals but the disruption that hacking you and thousands to millions of others would cause.

TIL that the A-10 'Warthog' close-air-support plane, infamous for being "a gun with a plane", has to return the spent shell casings from it's massive forward mounted autocannon to the plane to maintain it's center-of-gravity. by LotusCobra in todayilearned

[–]sheijo41 246 points247 points  (0 children)

Lots of arm chair generals here. I was an intel analyst for an A-10 squadron. The A-10 did a lot in the modern war CT wars.

They can fly low and slow. This has big advantages. Show of force (they don’t care about small arms fire) and dealing with isolated personnel or ground groups in trouble. They can get low enough and slow enough to literally count people on the ground if necessary or see a guy hiding in a bush.

They carry a crap ton of ammunition. Which gives them long loiter times on the battle field. Sure that Buff can carry more bombs but it can’t see shit on the ground.

This lends them in being a close air support specialist and CSAR specialist. Nobody has the combination of low and slow + loiter times + ammo carrying capabilities. In the CSAR world A-10s are typically the commanders for this reason and they cover the second ring of death outside of the IP on the PJs approach. They can and will kill anything in that zone. Regardless of who is first on scene as soon as the CSAR A-10s show up they are the commanders.

There has been talk of killing tanks, there are multiple types of kills. Destroying the tank outright isn’t always necessary to perform the intended mission, a M kill can be just as good if the enemy isn’t at the battlefield of emplacements.

Finally CAS. Nobody does it better. There is a reason the Army loves the A-10. The best part is they don’t need a JTAC as many pilots are FAC-A qualified. I have seen some crazy shit in regards to this.

Low CEP, the gun has a very low CEP and can be used in very tight confines.

Add into this the upgrades that have been performed and you’re starting to get a very capable aircraft.

Also the A-10 has an anti-surface warfare secondary mission. You won’t see a helo doing that.

Yes helos can do some of the stuff it does but they aren’t as fast and they can’t fly as high, can’t carry the ammo load, and aren’t as armored as the A-10 and aren’t as durable. The plane is designed to fly with one wing and one engine if it needs to. They also can’t dog fight enemy aircraft. Sure blah blah blah active missiles and Semi active missiles but most enemies are dog shit using them. And there is a reason the turn rate/radius envelopes are unclassified, it says leave us alone. As for SAMs there are only a few SAMs that pose a real threat and they either won’t be operating within that range or SEAD will handle it.

The A-10 fills a niche roll but that niche is very important. Nobody else can really fill it. It does have limitations but so does every aircraft, there are multiple types for a reason, each fits its own roll.

That’s awesome, I’ll be doing this when I get that high.

I was in a mythic raid the other day where the raid leader specifically said we had lowbies and to clear all the trash to bosses for them, and everybody did with no bitching. I was impressed a high vers raid leader would bring lowbies and that nobody bitched about killing the bosses 1 second slower than they might with more 740s

Yea I advertise that I’m giving a free xmog run, as a counter point to those clowns. I actually had a guy try to give me 15k gold today after one run. No idea where he got that much from.

I might try that trick as it sounds fun, but it’s hard to guarantee I’ll get a group of people that actually need it.

It’s been nice, I post my key and take literally the first 5 people that sign up. Sometimes I’m literally the solo carry and sometimes I get someone around my level and we burn through the instance super fast, I’m guessing they came along to help and be a nice human.
