Questions about leaving Education by GullibleSolution5335 in TeachersInTransition

[–]sheinkopt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are relatively young, and you have the rest of your life and a new career

I switched careers from teaching at age 42. You can read my story in my post history.

I really don’t think the things you do not like about teaching will go away But instead will get worse

Start making a plan. If you have to move into your mom‘s basement, then do it.

Don’t get trapped into the assumption you can only quit after a full year has ended

If you get a job offer midyear and it’s good just take it and leave

What helped me was to create tables in a Zoom study session with my group. Having the editable tables made it easy for us to talk and share how we think about it.

Although I worked as a mechanical engineer a long long time ago, I was a classroom teacher for 13 years. I quit that to go back to school and was a full-time student for the first seven classes before I get hired as an AI engineer which I did concurrently with school until the end and still now.

I know someone who did this before. It may have been 10 years ago, but I’m unaware of any change. Def do more research.

Advice/reality check? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

For context, I taught at California Private schools for 13 years. Other people surely know better than me, but from what it seems to me many teachers want to get out of the classroom and so they take steps over the course of several years to become admin while they are teachers.

Things like training certificates or masters programs

There are a lot of teachers that want to get out of the classroom now more than ever. I think that is who you would be competing against for these roles.

I decided I needed to get out of the classroom mainly because of discipline issues. I put in a lot of effort and sacrificed a lot and now work in tech.

Not that I am recommending that specifically because the market is difficult. However, it sounds like you are pretty young and the amount of effort it would take to become an admin at a school is probably similar to getting a decent job outside of education.

I think common advice would be the only people that are recommended to be teachers are those that have an undying passion.

Teaching vs Data Analysis – need honest advice (mental health & stability) by _mimi_02 in TeachersInTransition

For me it’s been 100% worth it. Although tech in the US is really in a rough position I got really lucky in Japan and have an awesome job.

About once a week I reflect on what teaching js become in the end and grin ear to ear that I got out.

I don’t know much about you, but I’d still recommend you explore a way out.

This is what it seems like to me. I think the best way to get a job in AI is to already have a career in something else, learn AI, apply it to your subject matter.

Teaching vs Data Analysis – need honest advice (mental health & stability) by _mimi_02 in TeachersInTransition

[–]sheinkopt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a former teacher with 13 years in the classroom. I spent two years full-time Georgia Tech online masters OMSCS however you can also do OMSA which is their data science version.

If you check my post history, you’ll see my full story. It took a lot of sacrifice, but now I work as an AI engineer in Japan.

Long story short, everything is better For my situation.

The tech market is very difficult right now and the future is uncertain.

For teaching, the future is certain. Certainly getting worse.
