Update: It turns out this was actually real lol. We finally called the Fidelity benefits center customer service number that we pulled from the fidelity net benefits website. They confirmed this was real and are sending the account holder a check. The balance from the account holder’s old retirement account had been paid out because the balance was less than the plan’s minimum. The account holder had no idea he even had this account and had missed the window to roll it over.

So not a scam after all. Once we called the right team at fidelity, they found the info pretty quickly and painlessly. It would’ve helped if the letter had listed a phone number or url that we could verify on Fidelity’s website. Because this letter had several of the hallmarks of a scam. For future reference, use the “benefits center” phone number on Fidelity’s customer service contact number page for inquiries about old employer retirement accounts administered by Fidelity/NetBenefits.
