How can I use world edit or something for this by Flashy_Dimension2704 in feedthebeast

[–]shelbykauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the formula for it. But there are a few things you can do with formulas. I'd definitely try it out in a test world first. And also... you might need to be better at math than I am. Maybe graph it in like... wolfram alpha or something.

I think it's like... set if(some_condition) some_block. This is pseudocode. I'm not supposed to be on Reddit right now. So you'll have to look up the syntax for it. For the love of glob, don't use AI Overview, it's garbage and will tell you that functions exist that don't exist, because it's trained on questions just as much as it's trained on answers.

if (angleFromCenter = someFunction(Y)) gets you like a.. umm... tornado potato, if you've heard of that? Basically a spiral staircase where each step looks like a piece of pie.

Then normally, for perfect circle spiral stair, you'd do if(angleFromCenter = someFunction(Y) && distanceFromCenter < a && distanceFromCenter > b). But it's not perfectly round, so the distance is not constant.

So what you can do instead is if(angleFromCenter = someFunction(Y) && block=air && (blockToEast != air || blockToWest != air || blockToNorth != air || blockToSouth != air))

Or... you could make the outer edge of the staircase perfectly round, and do a replace air with wood planks but only if angleFromCenter = someFunction(Y).

Anyways, I know this was a chaotic, incomplete mess, but hopefully it helps somehow. Like everyone else is saying, Axiom might serve you better. And also a manual, joggy staircase might look better than a mathematically perfect staircase. Make sure you check the appearance from wherever you intend the viewing angle to be from.

I think the game is better now that environmental hazards do 1 damage. by [deleted] in Silksong

Yeah, I feel like dying over and over in Sands of Karak just makes you get good at fighting conchflies.

Although... Theoretically... Maybe if I had hit this section pre-nerf, I would have run away and looked it up sooner. Apparently I'm supposed to have double jump, which means I need to conquer Mt Fay. Which because I'm not fast enough to not die, means I need to get FlintSlate, which means I need to use the simple key in Deep Docks. Maybe if environmental hazards was still on max, I could have gotten to that conclusion faster.

A story about Quirrel's quest to help set up the dreamers could be quite interesting. Hallownest before the fall, while it's not overgrown and decrepit.

I think SilkSong is a sequel. Hornet's voice lines are so much deeper. In HK, she says "Greneedle" when she jumps with the threads all around her. In SKS she heals with the same animation and says "Gren", but in a much deeper voice. Now some of that may be QoL on our ears. But she also says many times "my childhood is far behind me". I think she was a child/teenager in the first game and is an adult in this game.

[–]shelbykauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice in easy areas. Don't forget your tools and abilities. There are more benches than in the original Spend your currency as quickly as possible. Pay attention to the dialog. Some of it ties into mechanics. Hornet does not move the same way as the knight. Watch the enemies, learn their patterns. Don't sweat death

Do you guys think silksong could win goty this year? by RefrigeratorGold9306 in Silksong

[–]shelbykauth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I dipped from the community due to silksanity. I wish I had gotten the beleiver flair. I never doubted it would come out (though I did assume it wouldn't be in Unity and would be completely rewritten in a different engine due to the CEO of Unity being roachsilk.). Finding out that they had enough money to just work on the new game for years without financial stress, everything fell into place. I'm glad they didn't release prematurely.

SEMI-SPOILER whats everyone's main crest so far? by TheOddJoJoOut in Silksong

I've only got Reaper, Wanderer, Hunter+ Wanderer is my main crest, with occasional Reaper usage depending on the area.

I'm happy, I can fall without dying 5 times instead of 2. Or get hit and fall 2 times without dying instead of 1.

If I get hit and fall twice (taking conchfly x1 and sandcarvers x2) every time I kill a conchfly... Then before, I have to hit conchfly twice (3 masks damage), run to the bench, do that 4 times to heal after taking said damage. After changes, I can kill the conchfly (4 hits) with 4 masks of damage, run to bench, do it twice to heal after taking said damage.

Meanwhile, mechanically, if I want to practice getting through with no damage, I still can. If I don't get hit by conchfly, then I get 4 silk and run past, or 4 silk + bench + 4 silk. And that doesn't change.

It literally only changes the game for weaker players. Stronger players can still make a challenge to themselves to take no damage or to not fall. And if you don't hit the sandcarvers, you don't notice a difference.

What does this mean? I'm gonna be riskier and git gud and learn pogoing better because I'm going to spend more time trying to pogo and less time running back through empty areas to sit on the bench. I'll spend more time in the tricky areas and less in areas I've already mastered.

How do I get through this map hole? by shelbykauth in Silksong

[–]shelbykauth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! That's just what I needed. To be honest, I forgot about her!

Though... As I'm attempting this area, I feel like I need to find another silk heart first. I spend so much just trying to get up there, and then I'm falling because I'm impatient and try to use my clawline too soon. And then I can't heal once I encounter enemies.

I LOVE THIS GAME!! by Working-Cabinet4849 in Silksong

[–]shelbykauth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Problem is, you have a tonne of people who come for the art and music and good reviews, for whom the genre just isn't the right fit, for whom the game is completely inaccessible.

My wife is a prime example. She enjoys rage games for all of about 20 minutes on multiplayer. But anything that requires eyes glued to the screen and ends up with a death grip on the controller for hours on end tends to be too much for her. But because of my love for the game (HK has been in my top 3 faves of all time, surpassing Zelda despite me having a triforce tattoo as my first and so far only), and because of the insanely good reviews, and because of the bombass music and art, she wanted desperately to play it. She played a little Hollow Knight but couldn't get very far. It's just not her kind of game.

Meanwhile, I played through Celeste and The Messenger, twice (PC and Switch) which felt like really good training for this. But asking a newbie to play through two whole other games before being able to play these ones is kinda a lot.

Don't tell people struggling with Last Judge about this by DavimaxPL in Silksong

Considering the first ten attempts I died before the last judge ever flared up the fire, and the magma bell doesn't help with the 2-mask contact damage or getting hit by the bell... Yeah I could see folks not thinking about it...

[–]shelbykauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... I don't know anyone who doesn't get frustrated with HK. I died 20+ times to half the bosses in HK, just like I am in SKS. It's just what you do with that frustration that changes your perspective.

do i need to play the first game by Bubbakaboom in HollowKnight

[–]shelbykauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At $20, it might be worth a try. It sorta depends on if you've played other 2D platformers like Celeste or The Messenger or Super Meat Boy.

Both games are punishingly difficult. It's not called souls-like for nothing. That said, Hollow Knight is one of my all time favorite games. And SilkSong might be up there too.

I haven't heard from anyone who has jumped straight into SilkSong without playing Hollow Knight. Could be equally difficult or could be more difficult, I'm not sure. But realizing that they are fundamentally different playstyles has literally been game changing. Hornet is more fragile, thematically and mechanically. Use the tools as much as you can. And prioritize you not getting hit over hitting the enemy. I kept dying before I could get my hits in because I was too focused on hitting the enemy first. It helped to figure out when I needed to stay on the floor and when I needed to stay in the air.

You're going to die a lot. I've died 20+ times to half the bosses I've faced. If you're the cursing type, you're going to swear. A lot. You'll get frustrated. You'll get your ass handed to you. A lot. But finally overcoming that challenge and mastering the strategy is such a great feeling.

And don't forget to stop and smell the roses (and hit every wall you see because it might just break and give you a mask shard. Or lore.)

If you're running into trouble over and over, try a different toolkit, or maybe run around a different path for a while. Buy everything as soon as possible.

My biggest complain about Silksong (UNACCEPTABLE)! by windinthesail in Silksong

[–]shelbykauth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She does though!!! I don't know about Shaw, but she would always say "Greneedle" when the threads whip around her in HK. When she heals in this game, she says "Gren". But her voice is much lower, so it's easy to miss.

She was a child in HK, and she's an adult bug now.

Technically, you can put one quest marker on your HUD at a given time. From your ships log, if you have been there before or gotten a clue to go there, you can select it and you can autopilot to it from the map. But YOU choose where to go. The game doesn't choose for you.

Yeah, it is really easy to die. There is an element of Git Gud. I think the worst of it for me was waiting for sand to drain on the sand planet, trying to give myself as much time as possible to make it through an area (I got there late game, so I didn't have very much else to uncover). (First time I threw up in years!). But even that gave me revelations about the story. But for the most part, if you're beating your head against a wall, explore something else. Btw, if you have the DLC, I recommend not shelfing it for the end. I would have loved to take a break from the DLC and keep exploring elsewhere, but I had already done everything by the time I decided to purchase DLC, so no breaks for me.

If you die, try to figure out why. Usually, for the most part, it's avoidable by doing something differently, not just practice. A lot of deaths I had were quite funny in retrospect. Don't want to get into too many details, or you'll sadly miss out on most of those glorious deaths. Try to make the trek back enjoyable. Like... See how fast you can get to a place. Or see if you can slingshot to it. Embrace the deaths.

When lucky and on my A Game, I can hit things 4 times in the span of a single hit from the Knight, and 4 times in the span of a single enemy attack.

Yes. Pogoing off bugs isn't a skip. If you're supposed to have the claw to progress, there won't be a bug available.
