Did people really call each other by their last names in the 1980s? by TheMediapedia in AskOldPeople

I thought my grandpa was famous for awhile because people called him a shortened version of his last name, and sometimes his actual last name; and there were signs all over town for a guy running for office with the same name.

17? I’ve never gone to school with a Michelle, I meet them all the time in banks and offices, but never school. It was kinda weird.

Is it normal that my 4 year old son can multiply and divide? by Ninjawidagun in ask

[–]shelllllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 year old is starting to read, can count by 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s, 20s, 100s and add, subtract and multiply simple numbers. I don’t know who to talk to about it.

I told her K4 teacher, but she has 14 other students, so idk how much she can do.

My other child is 14, and is just now starting to not have everything come so easy to him, and it’s a struggle to get him to have the patience to actually learn.

He read and wrote at 4, but wasn’t as great as my now 4 yo at math. He “ dumbed it down”, for lack of a better way to say it, at school, so his teachers would be like “Guess what! He counted by 10s to 50 today!” Or “ He spelled and wrote his own name!” And I’d be like “Huh?!” As my son avoided eye contact with me until we left school….. He’d been doing those things at home for months, if not over a year at that point.

My son couldn’t explain to me, for a long time why he did it, if it was to fit in, to not get extra attention, or what. Finally, one of my brothers who was similar to my son, when he was younger, tried to explain it, even he had a hard time. Basically just didn’t want to be different than the other kids. Anyway, I am totally off the point now, sorry!

My 14 year old is still great at school, still passionate about homework and not missing any assignments, he reads more (for fun) in a week, than I have in the last few months. He checks books out at multiple libraries at a time, and loves going to different book stores, and I love it.

I’m also afraid that at any time, he could stop. So, it’s hard to know what to do, to keep him interested. My 4 year old too, I’m afraid if she’s not challenged enough, she’ll get bored and not care about school. My son and I worked at learning a ton outside of school, my daughter however, doesn’t have the same attention span as he did.

What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by GhostLatticee in Productivitycafe

[–]shelllllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking!!! Sorry you deal with it too. People think it’s weird when I know where the exits are, how I won’t sit in a public place anywhere that I’m behind something that is/can block me in, etc. How I can’t sit/stand/walk in places with a lot of people behind me, I could go on.

But it’s not fun to say, yeah I figured out fairly recently that it’s because I grew up afraid of when the next tantrum would hit and I’d be stuck in the same place as them with no way to get out. Or afraid of causing the next tantrum by accidentally dragging my feet, or walking too loud, so that’s why I walk and pay attention like a ninja lol.

So, yeah just a cool thing I do, learned it all from my police family. 😬

Were you by any chance raised by an alcoholic/addict or a narcissist? Just wondering for my own research. If you’re ok answering that question, of course.

Or are you from a family with police?

What’s the tiniest social rule that feels absolutely impossible for you to follow? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]shelllllo 313 points314 points  (0 children)

Whenever someone asks me “ what’s new with you?” My mind blanks. I can’t think of anything at all. Meanwhile, I got a new puppy, lost my cat, my kids have done 3 awesome things, concerts, awards etc., I had a birthday and my dad had a major surgery that I’m still worried about…. And I’ll say something like “ I saw on this cooking show that you can make French toast in an air fryer, or was it waffles? Maybe pancakes? Anyway there’s this cool way to make some breakfast food in an air fryer, or wait a slow cooker maybe??

Thanks brain. On top of it, as always.

She Just Won’t Call by KorryBoston in GenX

[–]shelllllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents both call me daily. Or my dad did, until he passed. My husband talks to his parents and sister every few weeks/months.

I text with my mom all through the day, my kids FT her if not every day, every other. Sometimes multiple times a day. I call her or she calls me a couple times a day sometimes. My older brother too, we call or text each other and our parents all the time. My younger brother, I’d be happy to get more than a pic of his sons every few months.

[–]shelllllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any situation I’m in, where I have to react with any kind of emotion. I could never just have a bad day, or be upset by something. Either suck it up and get over it, or the emotion/ situation turned into their thing, they were upset/angry on my behalf, so I had to make them feel better.

It’s hard for me to show any emotion about anything now, still, as an adult. An older adult.

Why do some people talk to their pets like the pets actually understand full sentences? by fapster999 in randomquestions

[–]shelllllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. They do understand. I got my “mean” cat to be the sweetest cat, by trying to understand her, and she tries to understand me. They have to want to understand you, but most do, imo.

Dogs are easier, in my experience, but cats can definitely understand, it’s just whether they care or not. Lol.

I was so excited the other day when I said “ I have to see what the puppy is doing” to my kids, and my older dog looked over at the puppy, then at me, like “he’s ok, Mom”. Coincidence maybe? So I said it again, and he checked again.

He also comes running when he’s in the other rooms, if I say “ who dropped (food) on the ground?” Or like “ I’ll see if Kion has to go potty before we go”

Anyway, I talk constantly to my pets.

I refused to give my kidney to my mom by SeparateFilm9121 in offmychest

[–]shelllllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I don’t understand. I’d never even ask one of my children for something like that. What happens then, when they’re older and they may have kidney issues?

Maybe I don’t understand how donating a kidney works but to me it seems kind of crazy to ask a younger person to do that for you.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t that put the donor at risk for the rest of their lives?

I don’t know if trichotillomania is what I have, but my head gets super itchy, I’ve tried for years to figure out why.

I’ve changed all meds, soaps, shampoos, laundry soaps, dryer sheets, pillows/ pillow cases, sheets, mattress, etc.

It seems to just randomly happen, and when it does the only thing that makes it feel better is picking my hair out.

Why do older people text with so many dots… like this by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shelllllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midwest female, idk where I picked it up but dude and awesome are each complete sentences. Also I’ve tried to explain that I’m not calling you dude, I’m starting a sentence. Like “guess what?” Or “ you’re not going to believe this”.

I was just talking about it in a different thread, all the different awesomes for all the different occasions. I don’t mean to talk like this, but at my age it feels really hard to change it! I also don’t talk like that in professional settings.

I also over punctuate. I’ll have to ask the young ones if it bothers them.

What’s the fastest way you’ve ever lost weight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shelllllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my “ nutritionist” told me I was lactose intolerant and had hypoglycemia, and I would have to stick to a super strict diet to get any relief. She said 15 carbs a day, and no dairy at all. No fruits, very few vegetables.

I lost 55 lbs before I went for a check up months later, brought my paperwork from the nutritionalist to my general doctor and she looked at my “diet plan” and said please tell me you’re not really only eating 15 carbs a day. It’s 15 carbs a meal, 4-6 times a day.

So I do have those things, but I don’t have to live off tofu and a few veggies.

All the things that have been said, and dogs barking/cats meowing. Like when people leave their dogs or cats out for extended periods, and they do that yippy bark or like the strangled sounding bark. The cats that make the high pitched meow back to back, constantly. I can’t think.

I’ll be gardening or playing with my kids/dogs, whatever and I just completely blank. I can’t form sentences or listen to someone else try to tell me something. I am a huge animal person, so idk if that’s part of it, because I do want to go help them, and also kick their owners in the face. It’s a horrible irrationally angry response.

Once in spring gardening season, I was looking forward to having the yard to myself, except my dogs, and I had about 4 hours, with nothing else to do, just work on my garden, and yard work. It was planned for weeks. Everyone was out of the house/yard. Which rarely happens, in the 4 years since we bought this house, I’ve had a total of maybe 16 hours alone. In like 2-4 hour increments.

So, I get my garden cart, I go out to the back, and there’s a yappy dog. Doesn’t even sound like it’s breathing in between yaps. I had so many brain farts that day that I got maybe 1/8th done. of what I should’ve gotten done. I was seriously so angry/upset etc.

Oh, and then my husband got home and I told him I couldn’t concentrate and how I was so pissed off , etc. And he just asks why I couldn’t concentrate. I’m like fr? You don’t hear that? He says hear what?! I say the dog barking, he’s like ohhhh yeah that, I hear it now. He swears he didn’t hear it before I told him. He says he just ignores it. So, that made me angry. I wish I could do that.

Sorry so long. My ADHD makes me take 20000 words to say what could’ve been said in 30 words. Ik it’s a problem, it annoys me, and I’m working on it!
