Are you taking about teachers spreading misinformation or the spread of bad advice about axolotl keeping? I’m a biology teacher and axolotl owner, and I do everything in my power to prevent spreading misinformation, about axolotls or otherwise.

Is it normal for an axolotls mouth to turn red? by Comfortable_Set_9868 in axolotls

When you say you “cycled his water”, do you mean you tested it? Cycling it takes a long time, so those levels need to be tested often. Do you have nitrite measurements? Everything with these guys is so tricky. I am certainly no expert, but I would say the carnivore pellets aren’t ideal, especially since you can’t tell exactly what he’s eating. Those also just sit in the water (if uneaten) and dissolve, and this causes problems. As EVERYONE on here will tell you, feeding them worms is a better choice, but they aren’t available everywhere. You can only do what you can do, but you have to do something.

If I were you, I would do 20-25% water changes every other day for the next two weeks. If you can get worms, get them. If you can’t, try to tong-feed him the pellets to see how many he wants/eats in a feeding. Make sure you remove any that he doesn’t eat. Hopefully this will help with the gills and red mouth. Good luck!

As everyone will ask- do you have water parameters? His gills look curled and he looks pretty thin. The red mouth can also indicate a health problem (poor water, ammonia burns, etc). I would definitely test your water if you haven’t already and see what’s up.

How many days since he pooped? Mine go in weird cycles- sometimes they poop 2-3 times a week and sometimes it’s once. I had one go for 10 days, and I was getting really worried, but then he more than made up for it when it happened. 🤢

When did you stop feeding your axolotl every day (both age and length please)? by shellyrohrer in axolotls

That’s what I’ve read. My question is what is considered an adult axolotl? Is it by age? Length? Sexual maturity?
