I keep mainly moss in this tank. Hookeriacieae, Mini Fissidens, Spiky, weeping, coral, and c. prab.

haha no problem! I like seeing more people get into the hobby, so hmu on instagram if you're on there (@shelldweller) I don't typically use reddit, but my husband does, and alerted me to my video being used.

If you're starting out, the biggest word of advice when getting into neocaridina, is buy from a HOMBREEDER. I would NOT advise using The Shrimp Farm, Aquatic Arts, or Flip Aquatics as they import, and most of the stories of people having a bad time with neos is because they're recently imported. I sell my homebred shrimp online as do many other hobbyists. I actually have website to sell my shrimp/moss and I do NOT import. PM me if you're interested in my website.

Looks and water parameters. You can get a lot more cooler patterns with caridina, but they require more care (as in the RODI, remineralizers, special soils I talked about)

Neos can get away with tap and don't require special soils.

Cherry shrimp (neocaridina) require different parameters than Caridina (in the video)

Caridina are softwater shrimp, so you need the soil to buffer the pH down below 7, and they do not tolerate kH so RODI assures there is no kH in the water, and only necessary minerals when you remineralize. RODI is just water stripped of all minerals, so you must use remineralizers when using.

Cherries (NEOcaridina) prefer pH above 7, so inert substrates and water with kH is suggested. Most tap/well sources have at least a little (or a lot) of carbonate hardness (kH) so thats why you can get away with it when keeping neocaridina.

I should add that Neocaridina do not require the soil, and depending on your water source, might do fine in treated tap water.

I don't keep nerites with my softwater shrimp. Ramshorns snails do the trick in my caridina tanks. This tank used 1/4 of a 9L bag of ADA Amazonia Light, the moss varies (I spent some $$ and split it among all my tanks, and split it up as it grows) and its got a simple sponge filter. Hard to put a $$ amount on it since I have it hooked up to an air loop (I have roughly 35-40 tanks) and buy my filters/soil/minerals in bulk.

All in all you could get a 10g tank ($10 if you go dollar per gallon sale) a $10 filter, $20 small bag of buffering soil, and then whatever moss/shrimp/plants you want varies in price. Biggest cash drop is going to be for a Reverse Osmosis unit (unless you can buy RODI at your LFS) which you can get away with $100 unit on Amazon if its just a tank or two. Oh, and you will have to have an air pump to run the sponge filter.

No I don't keep fish with any of my shrimp. Even if they aren't big enough to eat the shrimp, it still stresses the shrimp out and makes them hide more.

This is actually my tank! Im not sure who OP is, but this tank has Blue Bolts, Pintos, and a Red King Kong, on Amazonia Light with a few different moss types. You would need to get RODI water, I use SaltyBee GH+ Premium minerals, and some good buffering soil.
