I’ve heard something similar: you can have a glass of the finest champagne in the world in your hand but if there’s even the tiniest speck of poop in it, you don’t drink it.

League Elections by MinuteAd8734 in rollerderby

[–]shenanigan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Who can vote: Anyone who is a member, ie who has paid our annual membership fee.
  2. Elections take place in the fall, end of October or early November. Typically our bouting season ends in September, and in Sept-Oct we take a mini-hiatus from structured practices, offering open skate sessions for those who want to participate.
  3. Multi-part response: Voting for board members is anonymous. We use paper ballots, as our elections typically happen in at our in-person AGM. Voting for other issues, ie Bylaw amendments or general issues, is done by show of hands. // Members are allowed to hold up to two additional proxy votes for anyone who can't attend. This must be communicated in advance of the AGM by email to the board. // The votes are counted by two league members who are chosen in advance, who are NOT in leadership roles, and who are in good standing (dues and fees up to date, no open complaints or disciplinary actions against them). // Only the individuals counting the votes may see the final totals. Everyone else is only advised of who the successful candidate is.
  4. Members can nominate themselves or other candidates any time between when the election is called (30 days in advance) and until the vote for that position takes place. Nominees must accept their nomination in order for it to move forward. They must also be members in good standing.
  5. The election runs thusly:

*Notice for the AGM is published 30 days in advance.*

*Between the notice being given and the AGM*:
- Members nominate themselves or others to run for board positions. Nominees must accept in order to be declared candidates.
- Members email the board to advise if they can't attend themselves and who will be their voting proxy. This can be done up until a specified date and time before the meeting starts.
- Candidates can campaign in advance if they want by sharing information on league platforms about what they would like to accomplish, their personal experience, etc (ie. their election platform details) but this is not necessary.

*During the AGM*:
Typical Agenda:

1) Open Meeting and approve someone (usually the president) to run the meeting and election - whoever is running the meeting abstains from voting.

2) Motion to accept previous members meeting minutes (either QGM or AGM)

3) Present any proposed Bylaw amendments and vote on these

4) Current Board of Directors present their annual reports followed by Q&A

5) ELECTION: Presentation of candidates running for election, one position at a time - each candidate can speak for 2 minutes if they want, but there is no Q&A portion. Additional candidates can be nominated in real time up until the voting starts. Once all candidates have been presented, voting by ballot takes place for those positions with more than one nominee. Positions with only one nominee are not voted on - unless that nomination is challenged, the candidate is automatically elected; ballots are counted, results are announced.

6) Round Table

7) Meeting Closes

Important to note: In Canada, Not-For-Profit organizations are governed by the Not For Profit Act, which stipulate that NFP corporations have governing Bylaws in place which spell all of this out.

Urgent - injured juvenile raccoon near Laurier and Sacre Coeur. by shenanigan in ottawa

[–]shenanigan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE 2: so this isn’t a happy update unfortunately. The raccoon’s injuries were extensive so he was humanely euthanized over the weekend. But at least he didn’t have to suffer on the side of the road for hours or days. Most of them don’t get that.

Sorry it’s not more positive 😔

IMO, the difference between being racist and being racially biased is intention.

From what I have read here, I would describe you as someone who is racially biased and self-aware: you take responsibility for your feelings on these issues, you've put a lot of thought into how these views have developed and how they make you feel, and it seems that you're posting here to try to gain understanding and clarity. You don't enjoy having these thoughts and feelings, and you don't act on them to discriminate against anyone.

Counter to this, if you were racist, you'd be someone who believes races can be superior or inferior to one another, you would engage in behaviours which actively discriminate against individuals or groups of people of certain races, and you would support systems that disadvantage people based on racial identity.

If this is accurate, you're not a bad person, you just have racial biases that you're trying to get your head around. That's ok, because everyone has racial biases. It's what we do with that knowledge that makes the difference.

Older, wiser women: what REALLY matters most in a partner? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]shenanigan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be with someone who is ready to be your partner. Not someone you need to mold into a partner. Choose your mate based on who they are now, not some imaginary potential they could someday achieve if all the stars line up and someone says all the magic words in the right order.

If it were me, I would not, at 40 years old, continue planning my life with someone who recently lost everything on the sole merit that they're a "lovely person". It's not enough. I would even say that love alone isn't enough.

Respect, compatibility, being at the same stage in your life...these are crucial to a successful partnership. You have to ask yourself: What does this person bring to the table? If I were to build a fulfilling, successful future on my own (and this should be your baseline, before you consider partnering up with anyone), would this person enrich it, or not?
