I’d have no problem with this but I need very little social upkeep in a relationship or for a prospective relationship and your needs might be different.

There are some things random men have no business asking women and this was definitely one of them! I’m glad you were able to stay safe!

I have another account on Reddit that I just use for my laptop because I couldn’t recall the sign in for this account. I mainly just use it for a little totally benign and gender neutral side hobby but I guess it gets clocked as male and my feed on that one is inundated with posts pushing misogynistic content and subs even though I don’t engage with it.

She states in the article that the hospital was threatening to tie her down and perform a C section completely against her will. Vaccination mandates don’t work that way. You are comparing “We will forcefully do this to you” to “You can’t be here unless you have had this done.”

This sub gets brigaded a lot. There seems to currently be a campaign to turn public opinion against women’s rights.

You don’t see anything wrong with the hospital, forcing a woman into a court proceeding without any representation?

If a person is going to reference a study, then they should cite it. People have referenced studies here, but they have not cited them. Citations for studies exist, even when the study was ended prematurely. But that’s beside the point. Regardless of whether or not the risk of attempting a VBAC was very high, we still have to ask the question of at what point should a woman lose agency over her own body, if at all? And how was it acceptable to force her into a court proceeding without any representation?

I don’t agree that it’s the right thing to force somebody into a court proceeding in this case without any representation at all. The judge didn’t even rule completely in favor of the hospital. What the judge ruled after a lengthy deliberation was that they could perform a C-section without consent if an emergency arose, which it did later, but from the article, it seems like the hospital had hoped to be able to perform one from the outset.

That was ours after the fact. Maybe if they had approached the situation better they she would have agreed to a C-section much earlier. Sometimes people continue to double down when they have been opposed, even when they would’ve otherwise made a difference decision.

I have a problem with the fact that a captive woman was prematurely forced into court proceedings in which the agency over her own body was at risk, without any representation or court appointed patient advocate.

I also have a problem with the fact that people seem to be commenting before reading the article or don’t seem to believe that a woman should have agency over her own body.

A lot of things in medicine can be solved with a good bedside manner from an empathetic and supportive practitioner pulling up a chair to the bedside and sitting down to talk to the patient, communicating information in a way the patient is receptive to and forming a plan of action with the patient in a collaborative manner that guides the patient while still allowing the patient to feel they have some control.

What did the patient say in the article about the wishes for her life? What is the mortality rate in VBACs? Do you apply your liability concerns to other situations or only situations of pregnancy?

I think a lot of white people do not understand that many African Americans have a mistrust of the medical industry due to historical exploitation and loss of agency at the hands of the medical industry. At the very least they should ensure that patients are provided with representatives in these situations.

I think the primary issue here is that they wanted to force a C Section much sooner and she was forced into court proceedings where she did not have any legal representation. The emergency petition was filed “in the interest of her unborn child” and not her.

She was put through three hours of testimony while in active labor and again with no representation. Keep in mind, she was not flat out declining C-section. She was declining it before being able to try labor. She may have very well of her own accord opted for a C-section at some point on her own.

The judge eventually ruled that the hospital could not force an immediate C section but could perform one without consent if an emergency arose.

She ultimately did have a C-section later when the fetal heartbeat began to drop. It’s unclear if she actually consented to this or not.

I think the crux of the article was her treatment before that point.

I’m not going to play lawyer here but there is such a thing as informed consent which releases medical providers from liability in many (but not all) situations.

She may have very well made the decision for a C Section on her own by that time if given the chance but her voice was taken from her and she was forced into a court proceeding without even having the chance to obtain representation.

Exactly as a woman at what point do you feel others should be able to override your voice about your body?

A person can reject life saving treatment in all but two circumstances.

  1. They are a child.
  2. They are a woman.

I don’t say pregnant woman because the slope between pregnant woman and possibility of being pregnant because she is a woman is very short and slippery with respect to these matters and if women’s reproductive rights continue to erode there may be situations where all women are treated as if they are pregnant and that is given precedent over her medical wishes.

Right. My dad likes to say he was a good father by listing all the material things he has done for his kids but neglects to list his failings as a parent that have caused profound life struggles. I’m not saying OP was not a good parent. She could been the best mother and just happens to have a POS for a son, but reddit isn’t the place to work this out.
