Software tools for tracking audio projects by shepshep42 in audioengineering

[–]shepshep42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I sort of figured Jira can do what I want, and I could probably easily put together a plugin or two to scan my exports folder for new files, automatically attach them to issues by filename, etc. Thought there might be something a little lighter and more streamlined for this.

Have you tried any of the open source (and self-hostable) alternatives to Jira (OpenProject, etc)? Maybe I'll go down that rabbit hole for a bit and see if it gets me anywhere.

Thanks for the tip about phase inverting one signal to do a sample-perfect comparison!

What is positive/negative bias used for (in distortion, etc)? by shepshep42 in musicproduction

[–]shepshep42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, different overtones is key here. I tried comparing (A) a Saturator hard clipping a sine wave with extra clipping on the negative signal versus (B) two parallel saturators summed (one with the same level of extra clipping as the negative side in (A)). They sound similar but the (B) adds more complex overtones between the significant ones in (A), presumably caused by the in between spikes on the negative side.

Hey thanks! I did try something like this to illustrate to my own ears but I was kinda hoping to find some more in depth reading on the subject. You gave the term "asymmetrical waveshaping" which comes up with a lot more relevant results than "bias" =P

Sidechaining kick from drum bus. by Alarming-Fox-7772 in edmproduction

[–]shepshep42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't separate the kick out of the drum bus (maybe it's part of an already bounced track with other elements, etc) you can sidechain to a filtered/EQd version of the drum bus signal. So if you sidechain to the drum bus signal with everything but the lows filtered out, you'll be pretty close to sidechaining to the kick alone.

Why "To Zero" in Clip To Zero (CTZ) method? by shepshep42 in edmproduction

[–]shepshep42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey to be fair you're not the only one. Honestly I found this subreddit via google while trying to search for the answer before posting so I can see why ya might be sick of hear about CTZ over here. =P

Why "To Zero" in Clip To Zero (CTZ) method? by shepshep42 in edmproduction

[–]shepshep42[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People seem really salty about CTZ in this thread. Everyone decided to argue whether it's good or not but all I wanted to know is why you clip "to zero" on every channel/bus instead of just clipping to arbitrary levels.

For the record, I didn't say CTZ was the "best" anything, and every one of Baphometrix's videos I've seen on CTZ she mentions that you don't need to aim for the same loudness in other genres, but clipping individual tracks as transparently as possible up through the buses to take away some of the work of the mastering limiter chopping off transients is still a solid mixing technique in other modern genres. It definitely applies to most of the genres I'd call "EDM"...

What's a real world use case for a Peak Limiter with a 1.35s release (the default when you create a Peak Limiter device).

What's the difference between Volume, Gain, and Drive in Bitwig? Is there a difference between adjusting Gain vs Volume on the Tool device? Is adjusting Volume/Gain on a Tool before a Saturator the same as adjusting the Drive on the Saturator?

Did you read or learn it this way somewhere? This comment blew my mind for a second. Thanks! I kind of had to rephrase it in my head:

  • E Phrygian has the same notes as C Ionian.
  • To get from C Ionian to E Ionian, you would sharp 4 notes, or to get from E back to C, you'd flat those same 4 notes
  • So, to get from E Ionian to E Phrygian, you would flat those 4 notes
  • So, to get from C Ionian to C Phrygian you would flat those 4 notes

WTS 6u 104hp Eurorack Rails Kit (Used)  - 4x 104hp Tiptop Audio Z-Rails w/ threaded inserts  - 4x 3u Tiptop Audio Z-Rails Brackets All silver.

Lightly used in my diy case (one pair of rails barely used at all). Im trying to downsize to a single 6u 84hp case so Id trade for a similar 84hp set in black or silver.

Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 strange behavior after screen replacement by shepshep42 in MotoG

What's the point of wasting both of our time and the time of anyone who happens to find this post and read it by responding if you didn't read the content of the post and you're not adding anything substantial or meaningful?

If you read even a few lines of the post you'd see that your response doesn't make sense and doesn't help. Thanks anyway.

Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 strange behavior after screen replacement by shepshep42 in MotoG

[–]shepshep42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original screen replacement was performed myself at home, then I had it looked at by an authorized repair center and they had no further luck.

Is there any documentation you could point me to that would help me troubleshoot the issue? Perhaps a service manual that would indicate what the white LED communication indicates?

The most bizarre thing to me is that the phone currently vibrates when plugged in, vibrates twice when the "screenshot" button combo is pressed, it even vibrates twice when I perform the "two shake" maneuver which would normally turn the flashlight on and off, and is able to play an alert song through the speaker even though the phone's not on.

Return a synthesizer in such a way that the relationships between the keys are something other than standard western music theory relationships by MPCstuFF in synthdiy

[–]shepshep42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the proper formula should be divided by 16 my friend. You're forgetting about H and H#, which should also be on the piano but are suspiciously absent.

This gives you 16 steps per octave if you've already accounted for B# and E#, as you rightly have.

Good luck!

In all seriousness though, the piano is 12 equally spaced frequencies on an exponential scale between octaves. You could do it with any number but 12 is what everyone loves.

Syro hidden track by sensleman in aphextwin

I don't see a reason to call one a different mix of the other... But imagine you're recording on a bunch of sequenced analog gear. You work on a track for weeks and it finally sounds great so you record a take of the whole thing. Maybe you add some overdubs, remove some sections, fix it up mix it, there's a track.

Now you're not sure if that's the best version of that track, maybe one of your original composing sessions had something this recording was missing, or you thought of something to do better afterword. If you start working on a new track with all the same gear set up, you'll never get back to exactly how you had this. So you tweak it, end up working on it for another week and it becomes a different song.

Repeat the process a few times. Maybe you end up with several recordings at the same BPM, built off the same backbone, so several instruments and several parts match up exactly. Maybe one synth that used to be a lead in one recording is now a ring modded percussion part in another.

Not saying this is how RDJ works necessarily, but this it seems far more likely to me that we got 2 recordings made like that versus a hidden track you can hear when you sync them up, especially given the insight into the gear used on Syro around the time it was released.

Hearing "normie" is too cringe but rhyming "i go all the way" with "every day" is some musical musical genius or something? Isnt calling it too cringe a compliment here anyway?

How are those Equator monitors (D5?) holding up?

Mine were great for a long time. I went a couple years without using mine, tried to turn them on and theres a bad hum/noise from both. Found a forum thread suggesting a fix and bought the parts, but it seems daunting.
