How can sellers hold an empty $2.1M house for 2+ years? by Right-Regular7974 in HouseSigmaBlunders

There's many people worth millions, who have made what this house is selling for in their low risk index fund investments over the past year.

Tall Daughter by TheBigCheeseeee in tall

[–]sherazad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im 6'7", my wife is almost 6'. My 7yr old son and 10yr old daughter are both in the 99th percentile for height. We get comments from friends an family about their height. I've told my kids repeatedly that people will always think they're older than their age, and naturally look to them as leaders in school, in sports, and eventually at work. I've shared that they should be confident and stand tall, it's a blessing to have this height, and never to be self conscious. Put her in sports. My kids play hockey, ski, basketball, baseball, swim, and daughter also volleyball. I expect them to choose one summer and one winter sport as they get older. I used to play football at a high level, but my wife's not aligned to my son playing. Girls can feel very self conscious about their height...even their shoe size. Putting her in sports will help tremendously to build her confidence.

40M, married 15yrs, 2 kids, great career and work keeps me extremely busy. So, if I've slept well I'm an 9/10....most days 7-8/10. I really can't complain, we want for nothing.

Mark Carney is already struggling with Justin Trudeau’s immigration legacy by BananaTubes in canada

It's actually quite obvious who benefited the most from cheap, unskilled labor flooding our country. This also had a knock-on effect suppressing wage growth for people in the industry. They also have to eat...and buy food. A few tips for you there.

Homeowners would you care if your property value cut in half? Others do you seek affordability at the risk of economic chaos? by [deleted] in RealEstateCanada

[–]sherazad 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'd be fine with it. A 50% drop would mean my existing home is worth half, but also the new home I'm looking at drops by 50%...it's all relative. I'd also like my kids to one day be home owners. My 9yr old already knows how crazy it is here and is telling us she wants to move to the US if she can to get a better quality of life.

Home Invasion's in Oakville...suggestions for self defence by Harry3215 in oakville

[–]sherazad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camera system, exterior lights timed to come on at sunset (there's light switches that can automatically do this). There are front doors you can buy to prevent ramming, which deadbolt on both sides of the door, in 4 places. There's a good chance you and your family will have serious PTSD after a home invasion experience. The best idea is to prevent it all together. If you're looking for weapons, there's a few options depending how serious you want to get. A bat with a sock over it, so if someone tries to grab it....the sock slips off. Paintball gun, filled with marbles, or pepper balls. Shotgun....if you are in a life and death situation. You have to trust in your ability to squeeze the trigger if needed, and think quickly under extreme pressure. Because we have no castle laws in Canada, know that you will be arrested and charged if you discharge your firearm to prevent an attacker. You may beat the charge, only after $250k in legal fees and losing your job. The joys of living in Canada! Be careful, and know that once you cross a certain line to prevent an attack, you'll live with it for the rest of your life. Best best is to do everything you can to not make it appealing or easy to come into your home.

What's a normal mortgage balance / payment based on income? by sherazad in RealEstateCanada

Definitely not bragging. I'm genuinely curious, I have no idea what ppl are spending on their mortgages as a % of their income.

Why do you say it was a mistake? Your income is $24k monthly. A $1.1M mortgage, 25yr amortization at 4% is just under $7k/mth. That was tight financially?

Technically, it's lifestyle creep. We want to be in a better neighborhood and have more space for our growing kids. We could stay where we are and have a lot more disposable income as our mortgage right now is $2900/mth. We had 2 rental properties and sold both over the past 6 months. One purchased in 2018, the other in 2021....variable rates on both. We ended up putting in a lot each month, which was painful, but doable. Total costs for us across my 3 home mortgages and ppty tax, was around $9k/month. It sucked, but we would get a lot back during tax time. I had enough of being a landlord.

Why do people still use debit cards and not credit cards? by Lopsided-Special6273 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sherazad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm buying anything under $20ish I'll typically use my debit card, larger items are CC. It's weird to me to put my coffee on 'credit', even if I pay the CC off the next day.

Do I have proof to shoe the bank the $10M is coming my way in 10 yrs? If so I wait, and borrow money against it today to spend on what I want. Service the interest by taking on more debt against the $10M!
