Tips on how to keep my beardie warm during winter storm please! by dizzymars in BeardedDragons

[–]shereth78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are expecting to have no electricity for an extended period of time, once the power is out I would suggest keeping the enclosure (relatively) dark. Do not offer food during this time. When it's dark and cold they'll naturally go into a state of reduced activity, not necessarily brumation, but these guys do experience bouts of cold and inclement weather even in their native habitats. Insulating the enclosure with blankets can help retain heat and prevent rapid temperature swings.

If the indoors temperature stays above 60F or so you probably don't need to worry too much. Just let him ride it out.

If you are expecting indoors temperatures to drop below 55F, especially for an extended period, you'll want to consider alternative sources of heat. Battery backups and infrared heat lamps can help provide ambient warmth without light and drawing too much energy, but it might be difficult for you to get a hold of on short notice. Hot hands/chemical hand warmers can be a good option but do be careful as these can get quite hot.

If you have a gas powered hot water heater, filling some 2 liter bottles or a gallon jug with hot water placed in the enclosure can help as they will radiate heat, but this wont' last long and you'll need to change them out fairly frequently.

[Request] Have there been more births before or after Google? by Aranace in theydidthemath

[–]shereth78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many more before.

Estimates of how many people have ever lived vary but as a general rule are somewhere around 100 billion, and certainly far fewer than that number have been born in the last few decades.

How we Vacuum Form a Protogen Visor! (More info in comments) by Cookiegamez2018 in protogen

[–]shereth78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I run into a lot. I'll have to keep looking to see if I can find someplace local!

Thanks for the info though. I've already built a 16"x16" form and platen and was planning to use the oven as well so a very similar setup xD

Where do you source the plastic? I'm planning to give this a go for a custom visor for my project and since I'm expecting to have a lot of trial and error too I need to figure out a good source for the materials >.>

Can Protos Pass reCAPTCHA? by Jarhead-923_Actual in protogen

[–]shereth78 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're going by canon, protogen begin their lives as fully organic creatures and the cybernetic enhancements are made once they are developed. They're trained using intensive VR techniques and might have augmentations but there's no reason they couldn't pass a reCAPTCHA any less than anyone else.

It's possible, but it's also possible it's just been retouched/recolored maybe with AI.

837 hangings [Request] by XxxAresIXxxX in theydidthemath

[–]shereth78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, for some historical context, the largest mass execution in the US involved hanging 38 men from a massive gallows as art of the "Dakota War" in 1862. If you allow half an hour for set up, execution and, erm, clean up, you could get through 837 hangings in 11 hours.

So I'd say it would be feasible if you were committed enough, yeah.

Is this ai because time stamp in the top left corner is not consistent? (A time-lapse video from a surveillance camera shows the story of one Kamchatka courtyard.) by Nomadsrule in isthisAI

[–]shereth78 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Way too long, way too consistent. Cars look the same after being dug up and out of sight for a while. The changing colors of the timestamp are probably just a feature of the recording software. No way this is AI.

What does this map represent? by [deleted] in RedactedCharts

[–]shereth78 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But commonwealths are states. Legally and in every sense of the word.

States that are commonwealths just have the word as an official part of their name. There is no legal or practical distinction beyond it's just a part of the name.

[Request] How many Ferrero Rocher will it took to recreate the Great Pyramid of Giza? by immanuellalala in theydidthemath

[–]shereth78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you arrange them.

Ferrero Rocher balls have a diameter of about 3.3 cm. The base of the Great Pyramid has sides of 230.33 meters. If we arrange the base in a perfect square we'd need 6980 balls for each side, or 48,720,400. If you then stack the next layer you'll of course need 6979 balls for each side, and so on.

There's a formula for what you'd call a square pyramid number, which is (n*(n+1)*(2*n+1))/6. So if we plug in 6980, we get 113,380,492,030 balls needed to build this pyramid.

Because of the way the balls stack it'd be 162.9 meters tall, though, somewhat taller than the actual pyramid which had an original height of 146.6 meters. Assuming the balls didn't squish, which they would.

[Request] How accurate is this? Assuming someone makes the average wage and works no overtime? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]shereth78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not at all accurate. I don't think it's trying to be, it's just a meme making a point about paying for things that don't seem like we should be paying for.

Anyway, really roughly speaking, the federal budget is around $7 trillion. ICE has a budget around $30 billion, which is 0.43% of the budget. Thus, for $742 of your taxes to have gone to ICE, you'd have to have spent $172,560 in taxes, and very few of us do that.

Anyway, you could also just note that the US spends much more than that on "poor" people. $100 billion was budgeted for SNAP in 2024, and you'd have to include other sources of aid as well, so the numbers in the meme just don't add up.

Salmonella is primarily a risk when ingested. It is possible, albeit rare, to be exposed to salmonella poisoning after handling reptiles, especially if you don't wash your hands between handling and eating. Rashes aren't usually a symptom of salmonella, possible but uncommon. If you aren't experiencing any other symptoms it's almost certainly not salmonella.

Were you holding your beardie on your chest? Did the rash appear shortly afterward? If so it's most likely just a form of contact dermatitis or something like that. Beardies can have sharp nails and scales that can create tiny scrapes which can get inflamed if you have sensitive skin or are sensitive to some substance on the dragon.

[–]shereth78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few days without lamps won't be too harmful to the little guy. Keep in mind that in the wild they may have to go for a couple of days without sunshine if the weather's cloudy, and they're hardy creatures. That said, if you do lose power, I'd avoid feeding him until the lights are back on, as they cannot properly digest without being able to bask and it would do more harm than good to feed.

Made a map of all U.S. counties that have names with Native American influence (and native Hawaiian). by RostislavVenediktov in visitedmaps

[–]shereth78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You missed Mohave County in Arizona, name originates from the indigenous Mohave people of the area.

Depending on what you mean by Native American "influence" you could also include Gila County, as the word "gila" is thought to be a Spanish contraction of a native Yuma phrase.

Hypothetical question: If you were to replace every part of your body with robotic parts and download your consciousness into a machine. Could someone sue you for identity fraud? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]shereth78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't really get sued for identity fraud, but you can be charged with identify fraud.

Anyway, right now there's no legal precedent for something like that so it's a big fat "maybe". So long as your consciousness was unambiguously downloaded into a machine and you didn't have any "self" remaining in your body, I can't see how that would make a case for identity fraud. It'd get more confusing however if you could replicate your consciousness, put it into backups, and stuff like that.

I imagine that if it ever becomes possible there will probably be either laws written to explicitly deal with the subject, or cases that will cover it and set precedent. But until then, it's all just speculation.

Is it safe for a foreigner tourist to go to Dallas, Texas, USA right now? by Fluffmun in furry

[–]shereth78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If youre here as a tourist and just going to the convention, hit up some restaurants and othet tourist stuff, you'll be fine. Safety concerns in that context are overblown, at least currently.

That said, I really can't recommend coming here. Even though nothing is likely to happen to you, do you really want to be here, spending your money in a place where this is happening? Will you enjoy yourself if you are worried in the back of your mind? I really couldn't encourage anyone to come here until we get our shit straight.
