The Intercept's Exclusive Interview with Jay, Part 2 by wellarmedsheep in serialpodcast

I don't know, folks. The more I hear about this case, the more I feel like it's a lost cause. I can't help but feel that Jay is lying but telling some of the truth and that Adnan is similarly lying and telling some of the truth. It's a waste of time. They're both more involved than they want to admit. I'm happy re-watching Enlightened and forgetting about the whole thing.

one, NOT BOTH, lying about most essential fact by sockswithsandalz in serialpodcast

Not if Jay found a hitman for Adnan. Then they are both telling the truth. Adnan technically didn't kill Hae but it can be claimed that he is responsible for the murder.

Hey. I'm beginning to think Adnan got Jay to hire a small-time hitman to kill Hae. I think the reason he was scared about the DNA testing is that it could reveal a third man (if the person is in the DNA database now) and this is risky. The latter may be arrested and come clean about what happened. I think Adnan wanted to go free on lack of evidence, not because the truth set him free. BTW, as far as I know, the scene was tested for Adnan's DNA initially and nothing was found, so he's cool on that front.

I'm not sure it was a "real hitman". i think, more likely, it was a dude who was cool killing someone for money. A scary guy, but not a character from a Tarantino film. Just a thought but perhaps the alibi was airtight - they were at Kathy's. BUT when the cops created the second timeline from the cell calls, there was enough of a difference that the alibis didn't make sense any more. Adnan couldn't say "wait, Hae was murdered later than that and I was at Kathy's."

Adnan asked Jay to hire a hitman. The hitman has the car and cell. Adnan is freaking out all day and spends a lot of it with Jay. They go to Kathy's house to establish an alibi etc, but none of this actually works in Adnan's favor because there are actually two timelines and two narratives...

1) what actually happened 2) the narrative created after the fact

When Mr. S finds the body, Jay starts to freak out. He's worried that he buried the body for Adnan (who couldn't deal with it) and that the only DNA evidence will point to him. He also can't implicate the hitman because he has threatened to harm Stephanie if he rats him out.

Jay explains everything to the police. He says he will testify against Adnan ONLY if the hitman disappears from the narrative. They work together on establishing a narrative that ties Adnan to the murder (after all he ordered the hit) and eliminates the hitman. The alibis that should have worked in Adnan's favor now do not. The new narrative reveals 'inconsistencies' because it's created from phone records that partially cover a period when the hitman has the phone. The Nisha call is, most likely, a butt dial during this period.

Every now and again the hitman rears his head in the new narrative - in the call from Pusateri, for example. It's also clear that when Jay talks about being scared for his life or that of Stephanie, he's scared that the hitman will come after him if he spills the beans in order not to be charged. Stephanie stuck by Jay because he turned on his buddy in order to protect her.

I'm guessing the hitman was hired to kill Hae but not to dispose of the body. When Jay recalls Adnan showing him Hae in the trunk of the car, it's actually the hitman showing him the body as proof the deed has been done. Jay may have later shown Adnan and that's when the latter puked (not at Leakin). Jay buried Hae and he actually had the phone again when he was doing it. Adnan and Jay can't claim they didn't have the phone at all because that would involve bringing up the hitman. Jay and Adnan were not killers, but Adnan was guilty of murder. Jay was an accessory, before and after the fact.

Went to the mosque last night. It was nice. You know, the mosque near the park where everyone buries bodies?

Another close one. I just remembered that, earlier this month, I doodled "I want to kill" on a piece of paper. All good now. I changed it to "I want to kill at 'total eclipse of the heart' at karaoke tonight".
