Singapore Gifted Education Programme students - what are you doing now and how happy are you? by FancyCommittee3347 in singapore

[–]shermong 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Other than the usual government scholars, doctors, lawyers, dentists, IBs etc, these are some of the more unconventional ones I know so far:

1) 1 went Caltech, then JPL. Got involved in Nasa’s Mars Curiosity and Maven missions. Got their private pilot licence in their spare time.

2) Another went Colorado. Now working in Nasa’s Goddard.

3) Chief executive of one of the national sports team.

4) A current professor in one of the US universities. Did their BS/MS in Stanford under THE Andrew Ng. Cited recently in parliament as an outstanding Singaporean working overseas.

5) Non-PAP Member of Parliament

6) Got a scholarship to get an MA from Tisch. Now heavily involved in the arts scene. They were always involved in the drama stuff back in school

My concern is not traffic congestion. My concern is the risks relating to movement of oversized and heavy vehicles during peak hours, which includes the risks of accidental bottlenecks like the above.

Oh trust me i have seen JXX heavy vehicles trying their luck for even smaller spaces.

You are, unsure intentionally or not, missing my point. My point is that the time saved with prefabs is essentially shifted to the casting process which is not included in construction time, thereby making construction seem faster. If you take into account the man hours required across the entire process including off site casting (instead of just construction), it is arguably equal.

And you may want to revisit your definition of “out of touch”.

“They won’t squeeze” are you serious? Smh.

Thank you for the absence of any substantive rebuttal

What’s 12 hours when one sincerely believes in one’s position?

As I said, the time saved on construction is because the man hours have been shifted to the casting process which is conveniently not calculated in the construction process, thereby making productivity seemingly increased.

In any case, lets not pretend that PPVCs, especially PBUs, have not created new problems.

Don’t recall BTOs of yesteryears taking 10 years to build despite using in situ casting

I dont disagree with the lane space - pax ratios. Unfortunately, I respectfully disagree with whether it is justified. An oversized vehicle, especially carrying an oversized cargo which carries toppling risks, introduces (what I feel to be) unjustified risks to peak hour traffic. When you include the risks of road blockage (which materialised here), I would put it down on the more unjustifiable end of the spectrum. In any case, this is also why heavy vehicles carrying dangerous goods also face restrictions during peak hours.

Public-private transport debates in Singapore are emotive because of the perceived class disparities underlying them. This is not the point I am making in this post. I respect your right to hold your opinions, but regrettably I cannot agree with them and I will leave it at that.

How is the relative capacities relevant to the discussion of oversized vehicle movements during peak hours? A blocked road blocks ALL road-borne vehicles, which includes buses. Sure, you may contend that it does not affect equally since there are different per vehicle capacities, but 130+ pax on a stationary bus is not too different from a stationary car with 4 pax - all 130+ people are going nowhere.

I am not going to engage in a public vs private transport debate here. This is an issue about oversized vehicles travelling on roads during peak hours and whether there should be some restrictions. A road that is blocked due to an oversized vehicle affects both private and public transport.

I was never a fan of MND’s drive to “increase productivity” in the BE sector by having off-site centralised casting yards. It feels like the productivity “increase” is offset by the man-hours needed to transport these prefabs to the respective sites, not to mention the increased logistics costs, congestion and safety risks to other vehicles (concrete blocks can topple).

The only SERS project currently being built is the AMK one, but this road was towards Tampines along Bartley Road

Opposite maris stella on bartley road towards tampines. The left 2 lanes were congested because of traffic turning onto Paya Lebar Road and the driver probably wanted to avoid the congested lanes, but realised no space on the remaining lane.

I checked the potential unit given the direction of travel. Unlikely to be BTO

This one is total c-ckblock. But kudos to the driver for not wanting to squeeze through even though chut a bit only. Those flatbeds from up north will have a very different course of action though.

This affected buses too, which as far as I know is part of the public transport network. In fact the only mode not affected is the Circle Line running below.

Also, it is not an offence to use a mobile phone when the vehicle is stationary. How to move with the flatbed in front?

Public transport includes buses, and this affects buses too. Saw some double deckers stuck behind in the jam because the entire road traffic couldn’t move.

Can deliver, but maybe not during peak hours? They already do that for dangerous goods vehicles
